P r e s i d e n t ' s C o l u m nSeptember 1995Volunteers: It's the same old song - the usual folks put on allof YOUR Taconic races. We need YOU, new blood, to stepforward to do some work. We need YOU to do a variety oftasks, from marking courses, to setting up water stops, todesigning T-shirts, ordering awards, timing splits, pulling tabsand placing them on spindles, traffic control, picking up anddelivering refreshments, schmoozing with local officials, arranging for police coverage, obtaining permits, securinginsurance, providing a lead car, designing and distributingfliers, drumming up sponsorship and advertising, setting up thefinish line, filling out bibs for pre-entries, doing race dayregistration. None of this stuff is rocket science, but it is ALLIMPORTANT to ensure safe and enjoyable races. OUR racedirectors recognize and fear the imminent bum out of thecurrent crop of volunteers. How many times can they go to thewell? Perhaps the solution is to provide compensation to thevolunteers for their efiforts. My quick and dirty estimate, using$6.00/hour (about what McDonald's pays) times the thousandsof volunteer hours a year, would mean an increase in membership fees to $74.50 per individual and $122.50 per family. What do you think?

Club Team Championship: This event was very successful -by my count, TRRC had 48 fmishers (plus a couple of members who compete for other clubs). A group photo was takenby an intemationally known photographer (not Jack Brennan)which may appear in the "NYC Marathon" edition of the NewYork Running News. (A great photo is in this issue of TRL!)The food was excellent: 6 ft. wedges, salads, fruit, chips, pretzels, soda & beer. A fme time was had by all, and no one'scar was broken into!

NYC Marathon: By now, everyone who has applied for theNYC Marathon should know his or her status. Based on thefeedback I have received so far, it appears that we will have amuch smaller than usual number of Taconics running this year.So far, the only people I know who are running are: ChuckCreel, Bemie & Joan Deitrick, Joanne Bertram, Lee Saroken,Rich Nash and Bob Hermesch. Depsite many years ofpractice, I am still not telepathic, so ifyou are planning onrunning in this year's marathon, call me or send me an e-mail to TRRCEFM@aoLcom. At this time, the plan is toreserve only ONE bus, even though the ad indicates two.

1995 Track Ser iesBy Anthony Galfano with KatyD. Quinn

The 1995 running of the track series met with hot weather but enthusiastic running. Marsha Bailey, Cross Country coach atHenry Hudson High School, and Roy Amesen, Somers coach were encouraged by the turn-out of almost 100 runners each night. Manychildren participated. Although we don't have the children's times, we know that TRRC's Andrea Nash showed her grit and ran hard inthe heat!

The events were split between three evenings at the Peekskill track and three at Henry Hudson this year. The PeekskillRecreation Department did a tremendous job of encouraging community support and participation. Participation by Taconic Road Runnerswas down a little this year, but all in all it was a very good track series. Taconic results are listed below. Please note that participants musthave competed in five of the six events to qualify for an award, but all times are listed, and we are pleased that runners took advantage ofthe series on whichever evenings their schedules allowed.

Children's Track & Field SeriesBy Mike Gossett

Thus far, the Taconic Summer Series for Children can be described in two words: Hot and Enthusiastic! Theweather has been unforgiving, with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees or higher. This extreme heat seems tohave kept the turnout a bit below last year's, but those who do participate don't seem to notice. They just dousethemselves with ice water and they're ready to go again. From the 5 year-olds to the 12-14's, each child finisheswinded, smiling and with a ribbon in hand.

At times, the races are quite competitive, but good sportsmanship and camaraderie prevail at all times. In theconcluding relays, children are often asked to join with other runners they don't know so eveiyone has a chance tocompete. We all look forward to seeing them run on their respective school teams some day.

Roy Ameson (starter), Keith Smith (timer), and Marcia Bailey (places and ribbons), are all enthusiastic, patient and kind in dealing with the youngsters. Former Somers High School standout Rox Smith is also invaluablewith registration.

. . .And The Chi ld ren Wi l lL e a d T h e m . . .By Mike Gosset with Katy D. Quinn

TRRC's Mike Gossett founded The GrassRoots Track Club to encourage young runners in 1989.He reflected, recently, that although he also enjoys hisprofessional career as a Physical Education Teacherand coach, the Grass Roots Track Club has broughthim exceptional rewards. As Mike put it, "Combiningmy love to run with a child's sparkle and zest to run isspecial. Little did I understand the need for this typeof activity at the time I started the club."

While we frequently read that today's youthis, in general, obese, sedentary and physically "unfit,"arunning club offers children the opportimity to begin alife-long pursuit of physical fitness and fiin.

At the core of The Grass Roots Track Club isMike's philosophy of keeping it fiin and low-key. Hebelieves that the informality of the club fosters postivefeelings of accomplishment and a desire to do more...along, hopefully, with a desire to continue running forschool teams and beyond.

Mike would like to see more opportunities forchildren's running. He knows of three other clubs inthe area: one in conjunction with a community center, another which is a branch of an adult runing club, anda third which has a more competitive focus. Mikebelieves that if we are to strengthen Track in theUnited States, it should start at the club/age-grouplevel and present opportunities to run as abundant asthose to play team sports like soccer. Perhaps, someday, there will be an "American Youth RunningOrganization," and it will find the same enthusiasm incommunities as AYSO (American Youth SoccerOrganization) has.

TRRC is proud to sponsor opportunities forchildren to run in the age-group cross country seriesand the Columbus Day Races. If you are interested infurthering children's running opportunities, contactTRRC members who are especially active in thisendeavor: Mike Gossett, Scott Abercrombie, JohnHallinan and Tony Galfano.

Do You Know This Man?

By Joanna NashIf you are a parent in Taconic Road Runners and have a child or children in

the Clubs you should know him. He is quiet, almost shy with adults, but is greatwith kids. He can be seen on Monday and Thursday evenings with a flock of 20 orso youngsters from the age of 16 on down plaing games, running drills and offeringgentle encouragement to those who are lucky enough to be working with him, Thisperson is the heart of the Grass Roots Track Club, and my daughter is lucky enoughto be working with him this sunmier. He can also be seen at the WestchesterSummer Twilight Track Series with a stream of children following him, donningtheir Grass Roots Track Club T-shirts (if this shirt is not washed and ready for thetrack meet, there is the wrath of an angry child to deal with!)

One of his protege's is Bonnie Jean Regan, who qualified for the EmpireState Games in the 5000 meters this summer. It ends up, in addition, he ran on arelay team that won a silver medal with Doug Miller and Roy Arneson. During theschool year, he leaches Physical Education in a school very lucky to have him onstaff, coaches a track team at that school, and keeps the Grass Roots Track Cluba l i ve .

"Running is so pointless. Why don't you play areal sport?" If 1 had listened to this ridicule from myfriends back in ninth grade, I would not be the well-rounded, healthy and determined person 1 am today.

The most important thing that running has givenme is a strong sense of self-reliance. Whether it be in themiddle of a grueling 5K cross-coimtry race, or eight lapsinto a repetitive twelve lap indoor two-mile, I know that Imust count on myself to get through it. During each race, there is not a second when I don't feel like quitting, but 1never quit. My limp body may begin to cramp and the airmay not reach my starved lungs, but I never stop. Finally, when I cross the finish line in that somewhat dumbfoundedstate, known to all runners, I am overwhelmed by thegreatest feeling of accomplishment.

1 have applied this independence to everything thatgoes on in my life. Without getting too philosophical, in away, I view my Ufe as a race. Though at times I feelinglike settling for less, 1 know if I persevere, I will attain mygoals.

I am thankful and proud to be a part of therunmng community. The sport has given me theconfidence to believe in myself and endure whateverstruggles that may come my way.

"People you meet, lessons you learn, and placesyou go are all parts of growing. You learn many things inhigh school, but the ones you take with you mean the most.Running has affected my life in many aspects and betteredme as a person. Nothing that comes simply is worthachieving. Running has taught me to work for what youwant and it will mean that much more to you. Pride inyourself and your sport is essential to a successful personwhether they be the star of the team or the one who lost theg a m e .

True friendships are precious and rare.. After allthe afternoons you spend training with you team and all theweek-end track meets, you cannot help forming a specialbond with them. They are there to help you, encourageyou, and listen to you. No one is more important than theother. All I have been asked to do is to give one hundredand ten percent of myself to the team. These friendships Ihave been lucky enough to find will stay with me forever. When I am weak, they are my strength.

Lessons can be painful, lessons can be valuable. The term dedication has been instilled in me. Being amember of a track team has disciplined me in the area ofdedication. Sacrificing, in numerous ways and not alwaysbeing recognized for it, for the good of the team, hasshown me what dedication is about and has certainlytaught me a valuable lesson.

In order to better yourself, you must get out thereand just do it. Experiences I have encountered withnmning are ones to which none other could compare.Whether it be a simple dual meet at my high school, or thebiggest high school cross-country event at Van CortlandPark, or packing up for an overnight trip to Schenectadyfor the E.T. Grout Invitational, you learn what the sporttruly means to you. What have I learned? Pride lastslonger than pain.

Mrs. Norma Seluktekin,Thank you very much for awarding me the Taconic

Scholarship. I have attended John F. Kennedy Catholic HighSchool for four years and have been involved in their crosscountry/track team. The team has been named 1994-95Scholar-Athletes of New York State. The average of ouraverages is over 99. We have been recognized with a bannerand pins.

I plan to attend Providence College in Rhode Islandthis Fall.

Thank you for your time.Sincerely,Bridget Whalen

"Dash" Is Not Just A Detergentby Karen Antunano

"Runners to your mark, getset, go!" Your eyes are transfixed infront of you. All you hear is the soundof the starting gun, followed by yourheavy breathing and your spikes as theydig into the track. You burst forwardwith all that you have inside and withinseconds it's all over. Your body can'tbelieve the shock it's just been putthrough, but your mind is racing as fastas your heart - utter exhilaration. You've just run the 100 meter dash.Wow!! That's what I experienced lastw^eek during the fourth segment of thelaconic Track Series,

I have participated in eachsegment of the series and have learned alot about running track as well as aboutmyself The first thing 1 learned is thatIt doesn't get any easier. The secondthing is that it is incredibly fun. Third, given the opportunity, I'd do it again.

Based upon this, I wassurprised at the relatively small turnoutfrom laconic for the senes. Noticeablymissing were our Taconic women withonly 2-3 (Lee Saroken, Nancy Young, and myselt) coming to participateSeveral of the men that attend the

Wednesday night workouts at theYorktown High School track haveregularly participated and have madegreat strides, challenging themselves todo events they previously may not havedone. We saw Greg Diamond and BillFoley in the 100 meter dash, and wesaw Mike Gosset in the 800 meters, justto name a f ew.

By the way, kudos to MikeGosset with the Grassroots Track Club. The turnout of children for the trackseries has been mar\'elous. Fun is had

bv all, with some preltv exciting racesfrom our own Andrea Nash (i.e. 9seconds in the 55 meter dash and 41.2

seconds in the 200 meters) and apersonal best in the long jump of 7'6"by my amazing 5 year old, Justin. Weshould definitely keep looking over ourshoulders, because these kids will becatching up very shortly.

At this writing, there's onlyone more featured event for the series, and one make up day, both of whichwill be completed by the time thisnewsletter has gone to press. The trackseries allows us to challenge ourselvesand gives our children an opportunity' tohave lun and emulate the people thatmean the most to them — us. Theywatch us and root for us during all ourroad races; it's about time we give themthe same courtesy. It is a shame to limitourselves and them. Let's hope thatnext year T aconic can have a bettershowing of women and children at thismuch overlooked component of ourrunning club.

Putnam County ClassicJuly 4, 1995

Kopac At MahopacBy Boh Kopac

During my return to running thisyear, I have been sampling various Mid-Hudson Road Runner Club races andOnleora Runners Club races, events that Iran in my previous life (before my 1990injur\'). But there was one race I alwaysmeant to run and never did: The TaconicRoad Runners Club July 4th Mahopac Race. The main reason 1 wanted to run this racewas the opportunity to write an article withassonance (look it up) in the title. So,imagine my chagrin when I discovered onrace day that they changed the name of therace to the Putnam Classic! How to workassonance into a ti le with that name!? Theclosest I came was Redrum At Putnam (forStephen King fans), but that title had aninherent flaw: it didn't contain my name.

I had another incenti\ e to attendthe event: If I finished the race. I wasguaranteed my second PR in two races.Similar to the Woodstock Memorial Dayrace, it would be a distance 1 had never

attempted before (Footnote (appropriate fora nmning article) -1 DO run races on non-holidays.)

As 1 nervously anticipated the startof the race (cause), I dccided to pay a visit tothe men's room (effect). 1 almost thought 1had made a mistake and entered either thewomen's room or a Russian men's room, sincc there was a long line of runnerswaiting to use the facilities. The linestretched into the blackness of ihc lockerroom (lights were out in the shower area),so I moled my way to the back of the lineand Iioped that (a) the race wouldn't start ontime, or (b) the runners would use thefacilities as fast as they raced. Fortunatelyfor all those in the queue, (b) happened, andwe all were ready for the start of the race.

Right before the start of the race, arace oiTicial announced that 70% of therunners were males ages 30 to 49. (Great.

there goes my trophy. (But I now had anexplanation for the long line in the men'sroom,)) The official also made plaintiverequests for last-minute volunteers - which Icould fully understand sincc I am (shame-less-plug-on) Traffic-Control (oxymoron)director for the Dutchess County ClassicMarathon. (If anyone would like tovolunteer to work an intersection on

September 17. please call mc at (914) 452-2049. Shameless plug-ofT.) If the race wasshort of volunteers, however, it was not inevidence, as there were a nuiltitude ofvolunteers throughout the course.

For every downhill^there is an (even worse) uphill

At the start of the race, the packsurged forward. Soon we found ourselveson a downhill, and runners started passingme. 1 savored this moment, because there isa simple law of physics - for every downhill, there is an (even worse) uphill - for racedirectors are diabolical. The way 1 figure, arace director is frustrated with not beingable to run the race, and thus, unconsciously, chooses hills that will break themoral fiber of all except me. I would seekmy revenge on those uphills.

As 1 passed the lake, I was reminded of how hot it was, and I contemplated changing this race into a biathlon bydiving into the water and swimming acrossthe lake. I wondered if other runners wouldfollow my lead lemming-like, but I decidedto "Stay The Course." However, I stillwanted to participate in a biathlon and gotmy chance at the water stops. The courseofficials had placed barrels just beyond eachwater stop for discarded water cups, so Ihad a running/basketball biathlon. 1consistently scored two points at eachbarrel. It was akin to throwing change attollbooths on the Garden State Parkwaywithout stopping.

One feature of the race was amnner carrying the American flag. S theflag passed me, I had a burst of patrioticfervor, or else a burst of competitive juices, and 1 did a burst of running, attempting topace witli the flag, 1 figured 1 wouldn't getlost on the course if I followed the flag. But, alas, the fiag-bearer was a strongernmner and steadily pulled away from me.My consolation was that there must have

been a corresponding fife and dnim. andneither passed me during the race.

1 approached an unofficial waterstop at a home. A small girl was standing holding out water, but no runnersseemed willing to take water from her. Ilooked around suspiciously, searching forMr Gill, or perhaps on of her teachers, but there was no one in my generalvicinity, so I took the water.

During the uphills, someone hadwritten words of encouragement on tiiepavement. At times such as these. I wish1 carried a tape recorder to preserve andrelay the exact words. But, as I haveenough body fat that A1 don't need tocarrv' any additional weight, the followingis an approximation of the actual words,to the best of my recollection, influencedby a passage of time and effects of post-r a c e b e e r :

At one point, the course made alef t -hand turn. There wasa sign with an arrowpointing the correctway. 1 mentioned tothe runner beside methat if we stopped andpointed the arrow in the wrong direction,we would not have to worry about beingpassed by any more runners. However,he declined to stop, and 1 didn't want himto gain distance while I changed thearrow, so 1 left it alone, thus letting thePutnam Classic avoid any similarity tolast year's New York City Marathon.

As I passed each volunteerstanding at the intersections, I thankedeach and ever>' one of them. 1 overtookone runner who was breathing particularly hard going up a hill. Since I carrvwater with me. I offered her some water.1 also told another one of the ubiquitousbicycling volunteers to keep an eye on the

1 0

Page 11: 1995-09 Taconic Running Life September 1995

runner. I also kept yelling out CAR UPand CAR BACK, especially if there werecars on the course (bike club training).

As I approached the seven-milemark, I feh surprisingly strong. Anotherfellow runner appeared to be struggling.I tried to encourage him, telling him thathe was competing with himself and notwith other nmners. (Yeah, sure, as 1passed him.) 1 approached a pack ofrunners a hal f -mi le f rom the finish. Onesaid that his wish was to break one hour, and I was able to give him the good newsthat he would reach his goal, which mademe fee! altruistic and not the least bitguilty as 1 surged past him.

The last half-lap around thetrack gave me an opportunity to knowhow well 1 ran compared to Irv Miller, with whom I had car pooled to the race.lr\' was crossing the finish line as 1 washalfway around the track, so I knew 1 wasimproving over my previous races, 1crossed the finish line.

A sandbagging PR is still aPR,but it would not be right!

established my PR, and realized that if Ihad jogged the course it would have beeneasier for me to better the PR the nexttime I raced eight miles. (A sandbaggingPR is still a PR. but it would not be right.)

After the race, 1 felt an irresistible gravitational field emanafing fromthe beer table, where, after replenishingmy essential carbohydrates. 1 somehow-ended up distributing soda and ice torunners - even when 1 mn a race. I wind

up volunteering. There was a quintessential Irish volunteer at the table, who

regaled me with various jokes and stories, none of wliich I can publish here due todeconini and bad nicmor>'.

TRRC's Mary Hurley:Running For More Than Fun(The following is excepted from an article that appeared in theJune 21, 1995 edition of the Times Herald RECORDJ

Mary Hurley, a 33 year old Highland resident, ran inhigh school. Then she took a 16 year break. . until about 11/2 years ago, when she reportedly started running again' solely for fiin." Well, besides having ftin, she has also

managed to quit smoking (after being a 2 1/2 pack a daysmoker) and shed 30 pounds. She credits her improvedfitness level to running and to her workouts at a local healthc l u b .

'Tm down to 40 (minutes for a lOK) now," Hurleysaid. "I'm hoping to get to 38." She clocked a 40:16 at theOrange Classic lOK June 11 in Middletown to finish 12thwoman overall and second in the 30-39 year old age group.

Mary has a flill-timc job and is the mother of Billy,7, and Shannon, 3. She couldn't break 44:00 minutes lastyear, but she attributes her faster times this year to thehealtlh club workouts and mile repeats on the track.

Mary is also more concerned about nutrition nowthan she used to be, and she's pointing to a Fall marathonwith hopes of a 3 hour 40 minute qualifier for Boston.

Taconic wishes her good luck with all her runninggoals and hopes to see her on the TRRC women's team inmany races to come!

through thegrapevine..

As heard through thegrapevine: although Jack (Frankie) Magronecannot claim to be one of Taconic's fastestrunners, he is, however, one of our bestsingers. (Perhaps the only one at that, asthose of you who witnessed this past Christmas at Blue Mountain might attest.)

"Frankie" was at it again with Harryand Scott in company cheering him on atBrodies North, recently. According to thecrowd reaction, Jack won hands down withhis rendition of "My Way."

Upon putting the song request in forhis first song (Witchcraft) there was anothersinger named Jack who also requested to singthis very same song. I guess it was luck thatJack number two acquiesced and let the realTaconic Frankie sing it instead. The crowddefinitely preferred "our" Jack/Frankie.

Be ready my friend, we expect a largerrepertoire this Christmas at Blue Mountain -with no coaxing this time. (If you want to be"old blue eyes," though, you'd better ordertinted contacts now!)

By Larry LenahanAfter a three week heat wave and a seemingly unending stream of thunder storms, the weather broke in time for the biathlon.

Thirty-nine athletes came out to take on the challenge of the three mile run and half mile swim. For the third year, John Albanese came infirst overall in 28:33. A new face, to me at least, came in close behind: first in the famale category - Amanda Weiss in 33:03.Congratulations to both of you!

Sincere thanks to the volunteers, especially my daughter, Joanne, who came to the rescue when the chief lifeguard called at noonon Saturday. The message was straight forward - bad weather was imminent - if you want to put out the balloons, do it now. We did,and completed the task none too soon. Thanks kid!

I'd like to say more but time and space doesn't allow for. Thanks to everyone: participants, volunteers, spectators, andimportantly, Joe Albanese at All Seasons Sports for the raffle prize and the great lead bathing suit.. .the dubious distinction taken thisyear by good sport Brad Leach.

Biathlon HighlightsOwen McCrudden wins for the greatestdistance swum. After a respectable run,Owen lost almost 2.5 minutes in transition(A strip artist he's not) before getting intothe water. His swimming stroke wasarguably one of the strongest in the event. The problem for Owen, though, wasstaying on course. Without the customarywaves of Long Beach Island, he apparentlyfound the course too calm and created hisown havoc - straying from course andadding considerable distance. Rudi andKaty tried to hail him back on course (afteran appropriate, competitive delay). Theysuggest he keep his head up next year.

Debra Terranova experienced her maidenbiathlon and outpaced most of the womenin the run. Her good nature was taxed bythe swim, though, and her remarks uponexiting the water indicated that she'd rathercompete on dry land. Debbie was a strongcontender for the lead bathing suit award, but she graciously allowed Brad Leach totake home the honors. Lee Saroken, lastyear's lead bathing suit award winner, hadurged Debbie to enter the event this year.We hope to see Lee and Debbie competefor the honors next year!

Runners in this year's biathlon had theadded challenge of a locked gate at theent rance to Lockwood Lane. A l l

participants skirted the obstacle withoutdifficulty and the poison ivy is said to haveheld up well after the traffic subsided.

Melanie Benvenue gets the applause for thevolunteer traveling the greatest distance. Aloyal supporter of this event, TRRC washappy have her come up from New YorkCity to man her post at the water stop.

This year's distinctive T-shirt was onceagain created by Kevin Lenahan. Greati o b !

Dear Fellow Club Members:Last year, a number of us gathered in Central Park to participate in the Susan G. Kohmen Breast Cancer

Foundation's Race for the Cure. This was an event sponsored to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Earlier in theyear, my wife, Myra, lost her 12 year battle with the disease, and my close fiiends in the Club dedicated their participation in the event to Myra with specially made T-Shirts: "TRRC for Myra." (See Taconic Running Life, Nov. 1994.)

The experience of that day had a profound effect on all of us, but for some, it marked the beginning of a searchto do more to support women who are fighting this disease. This search lead us to a New York based organizationcalled SHARE which is a self-help support group for women with breast or ovarian cancer.

The dreadful Ifacts are that one out of eight women in their lifetime will be told "you have breast cancer." 1can tell lyou from personal experience, that upon hearing this, there is total confusion for both the patient and familymembers. SHARE is there from the very beginning to support such people at no cost.

We are determined to raise breast and ovarian cancer awareness in our Northern Westchester/Putnam community and we hope that we can ultimately develop our own self-help support group based on the SHARE model.

If you or your daughter, mother, sister, friend, wife or lover have ever been touched by breast or ovariancancer, won't you walk with us?

Please review the SHARE-A-WALK flyer in this issue of TRL and act now. You can make a difference!October 1, 1995 will be a day filled with emotion, but I promise you, it will not be a day of sadness. It will be

a day of celebration as we come together to provide support and hope for so many.If anyone can lend a hand preparing for the event or helping on the day of the walk, please call me. I certainly

can use your help.Thanks,

Falmouth Road Race Fields 7,000 RunnersBy Katy D. Quinn

Sunny sk>'s, winds that only affected the elite runners (TRRC's Greg Diamond had elite status!), and a beautifulrolling course along the seashore of Cape Cod greeted 7,000 runners at this year's Falmouth Road Race. Preparations for therace made it seem more like a marathon than a 7 miler. (We kept reminding each other that this was just "a ran to the mailboxes and back (a.k.a. the pumphouse short run)", but the bus ride to the start at 7:15 a.m. and waiting for staged startscommencing at 10:00 a.m. (I was in the "red start" and did not go off until 10:15 a.m.) made it seem like a marathon.Woods Hole, MA was not as accepting of the calls of nature as many staging areas, however: Security guards with 2-wayradios patrolled the bushes to make sure runners didn't "water or fertilize" the vegetation!

Complimcntar>' post-race refreshments included Poland Springs water (there were numerous water stops andsprinkling hoses along the route), Gatorade, Welch's frait juice bars. Nature's Ncctar, hot dogs with French's mustard andCape Cod potato chips. (The bounty of sponsors rather than the benefits of healthy eating seemed to prevail.)

The visit to the Cape was topped off with biking, sunning, beach-going, roller-blading and eating by those of us whomade a vacation of the event.. and it IS an event\

By Steve QuinnSome runners add variety to

their routines by interspersing hillworkouts, track speed sessions orinterval training to their usual mileage.I decided to add finger exercises at mycomputer keyboard!

In conversation with GregDiamond and Ed McLaughlin overpost-run refreshments, I learned thatthey were having loads of fun andgathering amazing amounts ofinformation through American-on-line,Although I'm not in shape to join themm their training runs (not yet, anyway),I decided Td start "surfing the internet"with them. I have learned tocommunicate via E-mail with them andwith my daughters who are away atcollege. The key here is a system thatallows you to communicate with theWorld Wide Web, a network ofcomputers storing countless bits ofinformafion. Prodigy, America On-line,COMPUSERVE and the new Windows95 all allow you to do this. It isimportant that the system contain abrowser. The browser is a search tool

that allows you to search using keywords. The only limit is yourimagination.

One thing I did not expect tofind on the WEB was running. Using aWEB browser I searched the WEB withthe word RUNNING and all kinds of

I searched the WEB withthe word RUNNING andall kinds of informationpopped upA couple of items of particular interestwere home pages entitled "dead runnerssociet}'", "The Running Page" and"USENET FAQs". (I also found acatalog of running equipment but wasnot able to re-find the address before

doing this article.)The "dead runners society"

is a discussion group for people wholike to talk about running. It includes atreasure chest of informafion (like thatyou could only get from a running sagesuch as Owen McCrudden.) Topics

include injuries, training tips, softwareand how running is afiected by running.Perhaps we need to add information onhow running is affected by beer.

"The Running Page"contains information on races, clubs, trails, marathons, race results etc. Asection on old foggy runners (Over 40)is expected within a few months,

"USENET FAQs" is acollection of frequently asked questionsabout running and provides a fairlylarge bank of information on running, running products, and training.

So on some rainy, rainy restday, get your computer and put in a fewlight years on cyberspace. It is not asmuch ftin as a 20 mile Teatown run, butyou don't sweat when you're done. It isfun to talk to runners fi-om all over the

place and find out what races are cooland which ones are not.P.S. Yes, TRRC is on line with ouro w n a d d r e s s : TA C O N I C R R C

Heel Pain Relates to Tight Calves

m n n m gA d v i s o r

c a s e f o r

Have you been plagued with Achilles tendon problems or plantar fasciitis (a nagging inflammation along the fibrous bandfrom your toes to your heels)? If so, do a wall push-up. That's what American Running and Fitness Association's EditorialGar>' Gordon, D.P.M.. suggests. The plantar fascia connects to the Achillcs, which in turn connccts to the calf musclc. If your calves are tight, which is themany runners, you will put too much pressure on your Achilles or plantar fascia. This can result in pain behind or under the

heel, or along the bottom of your foot."I had severe plantar fasciitis in 1982 and finally had to have surgery," said marathon runner, Pete

Pfitzinger. "The problem started to come back when I resumed training. That's when I was toid to startstretching my calf muscles. I've never had a problem since,"

To do a wall push-up, stand an arm's length from a wall, hold your arms straight, whoulder's widthapart, in front of you so your palms are aginst the wall. Keeping your knees straight, lean into the wall, bending your arms (if you have to move your feet, you're too far from the wal). You whould feel a stretch inyour calf. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Push away from the wall to return to your starting position.Repeat six to eight times. Do the same stretch again, but with your knees slightly bent.(Paper presented by Gary Gordon, D.PM., 1995 American Medical Athletic Association Boston MarathonSymposium, April 16, 1995.)
