P R E S I D E N T ' S C O L U M N -May1995RYE DERBY (4/23): Many thanks to the followingvolunteers who gave their time and energy to ensure thatthe registration and scoring of the Rye Derby was aresounding success: Greg Diamond, Nancy Young, RichAdamski, Rich Nash, Joanna Nash, Joe Porcaro, CarolHansen, Fred Loehfelm, Karen Antunano, Doug Miller,Joan Dietrick, Debbie Terranova, Scott Abercrombie,Howie Solow, Mike Gossett, Gary Steinel, Art Weisberg,Jimmy Whalen, and Lee Saroken. The folks at the "Y"remarked that they have never had registration go assmoothly nor have they had the results scored as quicklyand accurately. Great job!!!

HUMAN RACE (5/20): We hope to duplicate our Ryesuccess at Purchase. As usual, volunteers are needed. Please contact either Rich Adamski or Kate Quinn if youare available to assist. Again we will be responsible forregistration, finish line timing and scoring of the 5K event.

NORTH COUNTY NEWS (5/21): "Grunt Hill" will onceagain (and perhaps for the last time?) be featured prominently, as runners negotiate the traditional NGN course. However, that's not to say that the course is identical toprior years in that there will be a slight modification toallow for a fmal ("victory") lap around the new sixth gradeschool track before finishing in front of the new pavilion.Race directors Nick Caswell and Doug Miller are seekingvolunteers. Please call to volunteer.

LINCOLN HALL (6/11): A new course which eliminatesthe "big hill" should provide the opportunity for PR's atthe 5-miler. Race director Joanna Nash assures betterweather than last year.

T-SHIRTS: We have sold all of the forest green shortsleeve TRRC shirts. More will be ordered. If you missedout on the first batch, please call Lee at 741-2408 to placean order.

VERMONT CITY MARATHON (5/28): A sizeablecontingent of Taconics will be running in this event. If youare going, please let me know so I can follow-up and get allthe results for the newsletter.

NEW YORK CITY MARATHON LINE UP (5/13): I fyou plan on running in November, you should go to theLINE UP in Central Park - it improves your chancestremendously! TRRC cannot help you get into the NYCMara thon .

'Twas a Great Day for the Irish!

By Bobby O 'Davis & Jim WhalenIt wasn't a bad day for Josephine McAieer of

Hastings (originally of Ireland!)either; Mrs. McAleer wonthe coveted prize of two round-trip tickets to Ireland, compliments of Aer Lingus!

On Sunday, March 19, 1995, a gorgeous sunnymorning, 342 runners arrived at FDR Park to participate inthe annual St. Patrick's Day Race! The atmosphere wasvery happy and festive that morning. It seemed more like agiant picnic than a road race!

193 runners ran in the Two-Miler, which was wonby Greg Diamond (10:44). Gary Steinel placed second(35:28) and third place was taken by Rob Pollack (11:27).The women's contingent had a great showing, with MariaBleasdale taking first (13:13). Amy Kletnick was just oneminute behind at 14:13, and Carol Hanson took third placea t 14 :24 .

The lOK had 149 runners. First place was taken byMichael Hay (34:43), and second place was Chuck Creel(35:28). Third place was won by Kevin O'Connor with a36:04 finish. First place women's was secured by "SweetSixteen" Bonnie Jean Reagan in 41:02, and Mary Hurleywas second at 41:56. Jennie Austin place third with4 3 : 3 0 .

We were not only blessed with great weather, but our friends at Aer Lingus were very generous indeed. They provided the club with TWO round-trip tickets to Ireland for our drawing. Nine year old Craig Caruso couldhardly be contained when he heard his grandmother's name drawn. He couldn't stopjumping up and down forseveral minutes! Mrs. McAleer had to leave the park before the drawing, so young Craig was more than delightedto accept the prize for her.

It was a most successful day, which would not have been possible without the appearance of over 30"Leprechauns" who volunteered their wonderful and cheery assistance throughout the day. (If you were one of the"little people" and have not heard from us personally, please let us know.) Thanks one and all!

Race directors Jimmy Whelan &. Bob Davis congratulateCraig Camso, grandson of Josephine MacAleer, who wonthe drawing and a trip for two to Ireland. He is shown, above, with friends Steve, Matt & Anna Riordan who

accepted the prize on behalf of Mrs. MacAleer.- photo by E. Davis

They Went To A Garden Party...

By Harry NeesonBoxing? Are you kidding me or what?Fear not, TRRC has not ventured into diversification.

We are still a running club. All we needed was an excuse toparty. (Never let it be said we needed a good one, though thisdid turn out to be an occasion to remember.)

Forty-eight bodies climbed aboard the luxury vehicleat Muscoot in the early days of tax month, and about forty ofthem were asking about 4868's - which is the extension form,if you are unfamiliar with governmental jargon. More to thepoint, however, was Dcnise Lutrlck's foray into MSG for theinitial inclusion of women's competition in the Golden Gloves.

A bad start to festivities incurred with the Roldan man

showing up 15 minutes late. Only the fact that he was transporting 5 cases of ice cold beer - as in Budweiser, Dominick -saved him from missing the bus. (We were on Harry time.)

Throwing in some wine, courtesy of Howie Solow,Subway wedges, and far too much soda, the menu was complete. Away we went. With videos of Denise's semi-finalTKO shown through the built-in VCR system, an appropriateatmosphere was created, and by the time the Big Apple wasreached, this crew was ready for action.

(Another slight set-back was encountered at 33rd and2nd Avenue, when the bus found itself in single lane trafficbehind a garbage truck picking up refuse. This forced WeeHarry into action. With the big hand on four and the little oneon seven, he was already five minutes late for his rendezvous:He was the water man in Denise's corner!

Off he went in his run-down loafers, acting like he wasin the marathon, though the sound of thumping feet as theycovered 33rd Street, made him appear more of a man on therun from something or someone. Sweating and smellingprofusely, he arrived 10 minutes before the bus. The smell ofthe greasepaint made him somewhat innocuous.)

In through the immortal portals strode the four dozen,Taconic's green banner proudly held high for their pugilisticbeauty. The males were shouting for blood, their distaffcompanions hoping for a successful performance endingwithout damage to a brilliant display of front teeth.

At ringside. Jack Brennan and Robi Wolf had wangledpress passes, and with cameras clicking and mini-cam whirring, they were in their glory. Backstage, Denise and Donny weregoing through their pre-match routine. Cool, calm andcollected, she pranced, danced, and shadow boxed, while Harrymade himself busy at the buffet table.

The wait to bout seven seemed lengthy, but, eventually, the trio were called for equipment inspection. Denisepassed with flying (gold) colors; Donny was allowed to keephis Louisiana accent; Harry was not allowed to wear his kilt.

As they were escorted into the main arena, the crew in Section 203 erupted at the sight of South Salem'sanswer to George Foreman. The moment they had beenwaiting for was nearly at hand. Soon, introductions followedfor the women's 139 lb. class.

In the blue comer was Kathleen Collins, 23, fromLong Island. A formidable opponent with two decisions to hercredit. Kathleen's every pre-fight move had been recorded for

Champ Denise is interviewed at MSG with Trainer Donny andWee Harry looking on. -photo by Jack Brennanprosperity by a TV station's crew, who must have felt they were intraining for a CNN production. There was, indeed, much hype.

Denise, who had drawn a bye in the quarter finals, displayed her prowess in the semis with a third round TKO over anopponent whom Donny thought would have been harder to controlthan "a hound on an open porch in hunting season."

The entire crowd, in wild anticipation, gave both fighters arousing ovation as the lights dimmed and spotlights split thedarkness. A secondary hush permeated the hallowed halls, dispelled quickly when a timekeeper's action sounded out two bells. The contest had begun.

Denise was out from her comer faster than a jackrabbit ata greyhound track. (Carl Lewis should move so fast.) Collinsliterally ran to the side in an effort to avoid the onslaught. Deniseliterally ran after her. Hey, she was into running long before shewas into boxing, and all of that was done in a forward motion.

The die was cast.Denise's aggressiveness never subsided. Her conditioning

was ever so apparent and three delays to fix the headgear of heropponent were more of a hindrance than a help. Between rounds, she refused use of her stool - making Harry's job easier. "Hey,"she said, "George Foreman doesn't sit down and he's 45." (Whatshe doesn't understand is that George Foreman can't get back upagain if he sits down.)

All five judges concurred; a unanimous decision forTRRC. Up in 203, they were going bananas. Party time! Partyt ime !

Donny and Denise ran the gauntlet formed by the mediablitz. Post fight scenarios included the two women consoling andcongratulating as appropriate. The young Long Islander wasdistraught to the point of tears. . .such emotions from brokendreams arise.

There were no heavy hearts traveling northward. Even thereconnoitering party was understanding as they toured the neighborhood "resting" places in an effort to wrest some celebrants backto their mobile watering hole.

Joined by the new Golden Glove champion and herworthy trainer, the entourage departed. Out came the champagne. The toasts and the cheers began. Soon the Big Apple turned intoWestchester. Friday night turned into Saturday morning. BrianWheaton, Carmelo and Wee Harry made it to the reservoir thatmorning. For some reason the group was considerably smaller thanusual. But a good time was had by all.

By the smiles on their faces, you could tell thatthey weren't disappointed. This year's tenth annualswamp stomp, as Peekskill's Jack Bums refers to theMudders and Grunters, still presented a challenge.Although the course lacked the slop and glop of previousevents, the water table of the streams was a bit low(Some would disagree, but they just lost their footing!),not even one death threat was heard by race directors,Owen McCrudden and Steve Quinn.

Tom Church came across the line first, his nonchalant self, with a time of 31:39 to pull off the race'sfirst "hat trick," claiming it was a "piece of cake."Young Carmelo Roldan, Jr. (aka Greg Diamond) wassecond in a very respectable 35:20, with ScottAbercrombie close on his heels one tick behind. (Can'tbe any closer than that!) Joy Jaworowski of Jersey City, last year's winning woman, repeated with a time of39:12, besting last year's time of 39:56. DebbieTerranova was second with 44:04, and RobinMoloney's 46:12 rounded out the top three in the ladies'd i v i s i o n .

The coveted Geronimo Cup was won by the teamof Church, Diamond and Matt Sheehan - a hard act tobeat by any standard! A new award established this yearis the dubious distinction for the muddiest lookingfinisher. It was won by, that's right: Debbie Terranova.Honorable mentions were runners-up Billy Drake,Michael McCormack, and Lee Saroken. Tough luckguys - Just wait until next year!

Q/oa/We would like to thank all of the members

of the Taconic Road Runners Club who were sosupportive of us following the tragic death of ourson, Matthew McCrudden, on January 8, 1995.Your cards, prayers, and thoughtfulness aredeeply appreciated. We hope that we havethanked each one of you personally, but, in theevent that we may have overlooked any of you, please know that we are deeply grateful.Matthew s violent death dealt us a terrific blow, especially since his grandmother, Owen's mother, passed away December 30, 1994. A specialthanks to Fred & Pat, Katy & Steve, Harry &Carol, and Richie. — We couldn V have made itwithout you!

A Note About The Human Race

By Katy D. QuinnTaconic Road Runners will assist The Volunteer

Center of the United Way in putting on the third annualHuman Race 5K Run and Walk-a-thon on Saturday, May20. This year's venue will be SUNY Purchase. This eventoffers TRRC an opportunity to provide a service to an eventthat supports numerous not-for-profit agencies. Volunteersare needed. Please contact Rich Adamski, 528-8457 if youcan help!

Last year, TRRC's scholarship fund benefited frompledges collected for the fund. The Volunteer Center hasrescinded its offer to allow TRRC to raise money in thisfashion this year, because we do receive a managment fee foradministering the race, but there are a number of very worthygroups and organizations who can benefit from your pledgegathering. For a complete listing, see me. For a few ideas, consider the fol lowing; Habitat for Humanity of Westchester (for construc-Cancer Support Team, Inc. (for patient care programs) tion material for the Mt. Vernon project)Cluster, Inc. (to provide camp scholarships for families in Hospice of Northern Westchester/Putnam (to assist

elderly and frail care givers, bereavement support, &Food Patch (food for Westchester hungry) grief counseling)Friends of Karen (designate: in memory of Matthew Midnight Run (food & toiletries for homeless)M c C r u d d e n ) N o r t h E a s t W e s t c h e s t e r S p e c i a l R e c r e a t i o n ( t h e r a -

peutic recreation for people with differing abilities).Alcohol-Free (and runnerless) 5 MllerBy John Hallinan

Alyssa Lifrieri took advantage of a pleasant day, relatively fast course, and a sparse turnout to take the AlcoholFree 5 Mile race in 32:56. Our own Carmelo Roldan, cheated out of his chance for overall first, battled it out withCarmel's Wayne Brandt for the men's top honors. Alas, the fleet-footed Carmelo could not quite sustain the pace, dropping to third by a mere 20 seconds. John Orr's steady pace was good enough for a first in his age group and fourtho v e r a l l .

In the 2 mile "fun run," Mike Cosset paced two of his pupils, up and coming stars from the Grass Roots TrackClub. Mike pulled in at 11:04, followed by 11 year old Danielle Weldon (15:20) and 10 year old Anna Bateman (15:20),both from Pleasantville.

Due to a myriad of mix ups, the race was not well-publicized. However, a group has already formed to resurrectthe race for next year.

Many thanks to Pete Meisler and Steve Quinn for keeping me company at the lonely finish line!5 M i l e r : 2 M i l e r :

TI^C maintains membersliip with Road Runners Clubof America. A recent newsletter from W<CA includedreminders woilh considering:

Consideration. Most running events are volunteer. Peoplegive up their time to help you enjoy the opportunity topailicipatc. Consideration for those who have worked so hard toput on the event and understanding when little tilings may notmeet your level of expectation should be the rule, not theexception. "Thank you's" are always appreciated!

C'ominiclive criticism, however, does do much toenhance the quality of an event as well as promote safety.Timing is eveiything, though, so keep in mind that day-of-racecriticism may not be as elTective as positive criticism delivered alew days following the event. Too much is happening on raceday to allow the event director an opportunity to give you his/hercomplete attention.

Timeliness. While last-minute decisions to enter an event aresometimes unavoidable, more often you know which events youare going to run weeks in advance. Take the time to fill out theentry fomi and submit it early. This small step facilitates last-minute registration and makes it easier to provide quick andaccurate race day results. For many events, you'll save thosemore expensive day-of-race entry fees, too.

Common sense. Like most sports, there are risks involved inrunning. Event directors work hard to minimuze risks andpromote safelv. Keep these points in mind:• You are responsible for vour t)wn safety.• Roads caiT\' motorized traffic and often have potholes.

B e a l e r t !

• Line up at the stai1 with the 6-minute milers only if youtruly plan to run at that pace. Othenvise. line up withthose expected to run your pace.

• Only run a race for which you are properly trained andcondi t ioned.

• B e s e n s i t i v e t o w e a t h e r c o n d i t i o n s a n d m a k e d e c i s i o n s

about whether (or how hard) to run based on yourconditioning or health and the dictates of the weather.

» Leave headphones, baby strollers, bicycles, in-lineskates and pets at home when racing. Don'tcompormise your safety or the safety of others byintroducing outside elements into the spoil.

Proper perspective. Dim't take the sport too seriously. Trainas hard as you like. Race as fast as you want. But rememberthat there are many more important things in life than running, and it is important to retain a good sense of priority andperspective. Have fiin. Stay fit. Be healthy!

By Lee SarokenAs I sit down to write this article about the Women's

Veterans Team, formally known as the Masters Team, and theWomen's Open Team, I am wondering if anyone reads this stuff. Itsuddenly dawned on me that if I put something weird or unusualwithin the context of this presentation I might get some feedback...so here I go. The Open team consisting of Sarah Collins,Joan Dietrick, and Nancy Young ran amazingly great in Queens. The team took home third place medals for female team over-all.Congratulations on e great Team effort and excellent running.

The news continues to be great with both Women's Teamsfinishing first in their divisions. The Veterans ran with DonnaCavalieri, 3rd age group award, Melanie Benvenue and JoAnneBertram for a great showing. Our women just keep on trucking inthese races.

To regress to prior months results, on March 19, we sent ateam to Central Park. Joan Dietrick, Debbie Terranova and SarahCollins ran this 10k course like they owned the Park. Our Vets teamcomprised of Melanie Benvenue, Kate Glynn, Biff Roldan, NancyLaun. Welcome back Nancy. It's great to have ya! And LaurenLogan beat the "Northwind" with great times.

Thanks everyone for running. If you can do any of theraces listed below, please call me ....Looking forward to hearingfrom you Lee 741-2408

applause? Shattering a relay record three times! This year's Sybil Ludington5 OK saw three relay teams break the previous course record. The Masters teamof Gary Steinel/Nick Caswell broke the mark with a PR of 2:58:21 to takethird in the event, behind a stellar 2:54:16 finish for Paul Fendler and ScottAbercrombie and an amazing win bv Mark DeLeon and Scott Fisher in2 : 5 0 : 1 5 ! !

Bob Sweeney, no stranger to the winners circle in this event, took thetop honors in the individual 50K with an impressive 3:30:54 finish. (Ofparticular note is the fact that Bob suffered a punctured lung five months ago. What a terrific recovery!) TRRC's Anthony Galfano placed second with a4:01:53, followed by Ralph Balsam in 4;03;41.

This year's Sybil Ludington 50K road race and relay saw 29 runnersset off to do the whole thing, and another 11 two-person teams participate inthe relay. The skys were a mix of sun and clouds and the temperatureshovered just under the 60 degree mark to make it a perfect day for the event.Race director David Farquhar and his able assistants had the course wellmarked (although a couple of runners did miss a sign and wander off course),the water and Gatorade on the course ample, and the finishers party at theVFW well-stocked with refreshments (great job, Eileen).

One of the biggest surprises of the day was Carmelo Roldan completing the whole thing. Most surprised by this feat was Carmelo, himself, whohad set out to do a 20 mile training run for the Vermont Cities Marathonscheduled later in May. He got so caught up in the fun that he just kept going, and going, and going. Great job, Carmelo!!

This was a great event. Long Run RecoveryTips from AR&FA

The most important thing you can do torecover from long runs is to restock your muscles withfuel, because muscle fatigue seems to be due mostlyto lack of energy.

Long distance runners with wide rangingperformance (half marathon 1: 18 to 2:08, and marathon 2:50 to 4:20) ran a marathon, followed by agroup of tests. The results, reported by Jean-ClaudeChevrolet, Ph.D., and colleagues in Geneva, Switzerland, showed a decrease in breathing muscles' and legmuscles' force for more than 2.5 hours after the race.

Attempts to distinguish the cause of thismuscle fatigue failed to link it with training routines, physiological characteristics of the runners, or theirown perception of fatigue. There was no change inlung capacity or breathing mechanics.

Since muscle fatigue has been called "failureto maintain the required or expected force" the mostlikely explanation for this relatively short-term (a fewhours) fatigue is that the muscles' energy supply, glycogen, ran short.

If muscle fatigue after endurance exercise istruly due to insufficient energy, the most importantthing you can do to put things right is to refill yourfuel tank. According to the American and CanadianDietetic Associations' recommendations for athleticperformance, muscles will replace glycogen stores tothe highest degree when you eat up to 600 grams(This is not just a couple of quick snacks, but up to2,400 calories.) of easily digestible carbohydratefoods during the first few hours after enduranceexercise.

Easily digested high-carbohydrate foodsinclude raisins, bananas, oatmeal, breads and rolls, rice, pasta, potatoes, carrots, peas, broad beans, honey and hard candy. Former Olympian PetePfitzinger says, "1 tell my athletes to eat and drinkimmediately after long runs. I always felt this improved my ability to recover."

Many people can eat enthusiastically after along workout. If you are one of the few that feel alittle unsettled after hard endurance exercise, trycarbohydrate drinks or dilute juices. These may letyou take in some calories and settle your stomach sothat you can switch to solid food after about half anh o u r .

Ode To The Retiring RunnerBy ]lm Bagg (aka K.F.)

A new job, an old backhave knocked me, off the track.

I won't be running, perhaps forever, best of luck, on your next endeavor.

The time spent, while not running, with my daughter, has been stunning.

But I'll be around, at the raceswatching you, go through your paces.

Made many friends, over the years, the competition, and yes, the beers!

The only regret, I may not fix.Is the 100th Boston, In '96.

But then again, you never know,I just might, train to go!

Sprinting and Bounding Drills For Runners(From AR&FA)

If you add only one drill to your enduranceand speed work, springing or bounding may give youthe most benefit for time spent in practice.

The value of springing and bounding rests onthe principle that your feet act like springs when yourun; they store energy when the muscles and tendonsare compressed and release energy when they expand.British scientist R. McNeill Alexander, F.R.S.,measured the recoil energy of human feet in hislaboratory to prove they behaved like springs.Alexander compared feet to pogo sticks which

The value of springing and boundingrests on the principle that your feet actlike springs when you run; they storeenergy when the muscles and tendons arecompressed and release energy whenthey expand.

compress their springs when landing and recoil tothrow the jumper back into the air. He found that thearch on impact returns 80% of its stored energy. Bycomparison, running shoes of the 1980s retumed55% to 69% of stored energy on impact. McNeill'sresearch is the foundation of the design of modemtracks, built to aid energy transfer and help athletesrun faster.

You can't change the mechanical propertiesof the roads and tracks you run on, but you canimprove the elastic properties of your feet and legs byspringing and bounding. In these drills, push off witha more forceful ankle motion and toe-off, push higherand with a longer stride than normal, and land on yourmidfoot, or even toes, not on you heel.

Springing is not new. It was used in the1960s by Arthur Lydiard, coach of numerousoutstanding runners, such as Peter Snell, who eamedOlympic medals and broke world records. In 1978,Lydiard wrote: "Since ankle flexibility and power isimportant you should work on this training all thetime. Bouncing up gentle slopes on your toes willgradually develop power and flexion in the ankles. Itwill also stretch other leg muscles and tendons."

A more recent adaptation of hill springing isfound in Galloway's Book on Running. "Pick amoderate hill. Bounce off one foot and leap into the

air lifting lead knee. Hang in the air until the lastsecond. Very quickly, bring the leading leg down fora landing, and spring off with the leg almost straight. Here's where the ankle has to doits work. Never let the push-off leg be perfectlystraight. Keep the knee slightly bent to avoidspraining the weak and slow-healing muscles behindthe knee. Keep a short stride length, just work onfloating and maintaining form. Start with only a fewsprings; gradually work up to 50 to 100 yards."

According to Galloway, bounding is avariation performed on level or slightly slopingsurfaces. Differences from hill springing are: "Liftknees higher. Tcike longer strides. On each step youare driving with greater power, extending your strideand developing your calf muscles."

David Martin, Ph.D., and Sebastian Coe(authors of Training Distance Runners) alsorecommend similar techniques for short hill runs."An exaggerated running style is required tomaximize speed, as this spreads the energyrequirement to large muscle groups other than thelegs. Once again, the vigorous arm action, a quickand powerful knee lift by action of the hip flexors, and the powerful toe-off from each driving leg are allimportant elements for sudden dramatic pacechanging..."

These drills will strengthen your feet and legmuscles and tendons and make them more springy, inother words help them deliver more energy with eachstep. Even though you're an experienced runner, treatspringing and bounding like any other new exercise, because although they help deliver more energy, theytake more energy to perform, too, and are morestressful than normal running. Former Olympian PetePfitzinger warns, "Don't bound when your musclesare stiff and sore such as the day after a hard workouto r r ace . "

Begin with only 20 to 50 feet and concentrateon form; use your arms to drive your legs. As youbecome familiar with these techniques, slowly builduntil you can keep them up for 100 yards. If you runlong one day a week, and perform speedwork once aweek, add a little springing and bounding to your lowintensity runs for variety. Your racing shouldimprove after a few weeks.

NORTH COUNTY NEWS (5/21): "Grunt Hill" will onceagain (and perhaps for the last time?) be featured prominently, as runners negotiate the traditional NGN course. However, that's not to say that the course is identical toprior years in that there will be a slight modification toallow for a final ("victory") lap around the new sixth gradeschool track before finishing in front of the new pavilion.Race directors Nick Caswell and Doug Miller are seekingvolunteers. Please call to volunteer.

LINCOLN HALL (6/11): A new course which eliminatesthe "big hill" should provide the opportunity for PR's atthe 5-miler. Race director Joanna Nash assures betterweather than last year.

Twas a Great Day for the Irish!

By Bobby O Davis & Jim WhalenIt wasn't a bad day for Josephine McAIeer of

Amy Kletnick was just oneminute behind at 14:13, and Carol Hanson took third placeat 14 :24 .

Race directors Jimmy Whelan & Bob Davis congratulateCraig Caruso, grandson of Josephine MacAleer, who wonthe drawing and a trip for two to Ireland. He is shown, above, with friends Steve, Matt & Anna Riordan whoaccepted the prize on behalf of Mrs. MacAleer.

We were not only blessed with great weather, but our friends at Aer Lingus were very generous indeed. They provided the club with TWO round-trip tickets to Ireland for our drawing. Nine year old Craig Caruso couldhardly be contained when he heard his grandmother's name drawn. He couldn't stop jumping up and down forseveral minutes!

They Went To A Garden Party...

By Harry NeesonBoxing? Are you kidding me or what?Fear not. TRRC has not ventured into diversification.

More to thepoint, however, was Denise Lutrick's foray into MSG for theinitial inclusion of women's competition in the Golden Gloves.

In through the immortal portals strode the four dozen, laconic's green banner proudly held high for their pugilisticbeauty. The males were shouting for blood, their distaffcompanions hoping for a successful performance endingwithout damage to a brilliant display of front teeth.

At ringside, Jack Brennan and Robi Wolf had wangledpress passes, and with cameras clicking and mini-cam whirring, they were in their glory.

A formidable opponent with two decisions to hercredit, Kathleen's every pre-fight move had been recorded for

Champ Denise is interviewed at MSG with Trainer Donny andW e e H a r r y l o o k i n g o n . - p h o t o b y J a c k B r e n n a nprosperity by a TV station's crew, who must have felt they were intraining for a CNN production.

All five judges concurred: a unanimous decision forTRRC. Up in 203, they were going bananas. Party time! Partyt i m e !

Friday night tumed into Saturday morning. BrianWheaton, Carmelo and Wee Harry made it to the reservoir thatmorning. For some reason the group was considerably smaller thanusual. But a good time was had by all.

By the smiles on their faces, you could tell thatthey weren't disappointed. This year's tenth annualswamp stomp, as Peekskill's Jack Bums refers to theMudders and Grunters, still presented a challenge.Although the course lacked the slop and glop of previousevents, the water table of the streams was a bit low(Some would disagree, but they just lost their footing!),not even one death threat was heard by race directors,Owen McCmdden and Steve Quinn.

Tom Church came across the line first, his nonchalant self, with a time of 31:39 to pull off the race'sfirst "hat trick," claiming it was a "piece of cake."Young Carmelo Roldan, Jr. (aka Greg Diamond) wassecond in a very respectable 35:20, with ScottAbercromhie close on his heels one tick behind. (Can'tbe any closer than that!) Joy Jaworowski of Jersey City, last year's winning woman, repeated with a time of39:12, besting last year's time of 39:56. DebbieTerranova was second with 44:04, and RobinMaloney's 46:12 rounded out the top three in the ladies'd iv is ion.

We would like to thank all of the membersof the Taconic Road Runners Club who were sosupportive of us following the tragic death of ourson, Matthew McCrudden, on January 8, 1995.Your cards, prayers, and thoughtfulness aredeeply appreciated. We hope that we havethanked each one of you personally, but, in theevent that we may have overlooked any of you, please know that we are deeply grateful.Matthew's violent death dealt us a terrific blow, especially since his grandmother, Owen's mother, passed away December 30, 1994. A specialthanks to Fred & Pat, Katy & Steve, Harry &Carol, and Richie. — We couldn 't have made itwithout you!

Fondly,

To laugh often and much;to win the respect of intelligent people

and affection of children;to earn the appreciation of honest critics and

endure the betrayal offalse friends;to appreciate beauty,

to find the best in others;to leave the world a bit better,

whether by a healthy child, a garden patch ora redeemed social condition;

to know even one life has breathed easierbecause you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

Alcohol-Free (and runnerless) 5 MllerBy John Hallinan

Alyssa Lifrieri took advantage of a pleasant day, relatively fast course, and a sparse turnout to take the AlcoholFree 5 Mile race in 32:56. Our own Carmelo Roldan. cheated out of his chance for overall first, battled it out w ithCanneFs Wayne Brandt for the men's top honors. Alas, the fleet-footed Camielo could not quite sustain the pace, dropping to third by a mere 20 seconds. John Orr's steady pace was good enough for a first in his age group and fourtho v e r a l l .

In the 2 mile "fun run.' Mike Cosset paced two of his pupils, up and coming stars from the Grass Roots TrackClub. Mike pulled in at 11:04, followed by 11 year old Danielle Weldon (15:20) and 10 year old Anna Bateman (15:20).both from Pleasantville.

Due to a myriad of mix ups. the race was not well-publicized. However, a group has already fonned to resurrectthe race for next year.

Many thanks to Pete Meisler and Steve

TRRC maintains membership with Road Runners Clubof America. A recent newsletter from RRCA includedreminders woi1h considering:

Consideration. Most running events are volunteer. Peoplegive up their time to help you enjoy the opportunity toparticipate. Consideration for those who have worked so hard toput on the event and understanding when little things may notmeet your level of expectation should be the lule, not theexception. "Thank you's" are always appreciated!

Consu-uciive criticism, however, does do much toenhance the quality of an event as well as promote safety.Timing is eveiything, though, so keep in mind that day-of-racecriticism may not be as etfective as positive criticism delivered afew days following the event, Too much is happening on raceday to allow the event director an opportunity to give you his/hercomplete attention.

Timeliness. Wliile last-minute decisions to enter an event arcsometimes una\'oidable. more olten you know which events youare going to mil weeks in advance. Take the time to till out theentiy fomi and submit it early. This small step facilitates last-minute registration and makes it easier to provide quick andaccurate race day results. For many events, you'll save thosemore expensive day-of-race entrv fees, too.

Common sense. Like most sports, there are risks involved inmnning. Event directors work hard to minimuze risks andpromote safety. Keep these points in mind:• You are responsible for vour own safety.• Roads earn' motorized tralTic and often have potholes.

B e a l e r t !• l.inc up at the start with the 6-minute milers only if you

tmly plan to mn at that pace. Othenvise, line up withthose expected to mn your pace.

• Only mn a race for which you are properly trained andcondit ioned.

• B e s e n s i t i v e t o w e a t h e r c o n d i t i o n s a n d m a k e d e c i s i o n s

about whether (or how hard) to mn based on yourconditioning or health and the dictates of the weather.

• Leave headphones, baby strollers, bicycles, in-line.skates and pets at home when racing. Don'tcomponnise your safety or the safety of others byintroducing outside elements into the sport.

Proper perspective. Don't take the sport too scriouslv. Trainas hard as you like. Race as fast as you want. But rememberthat there are many more important things in life than mnning, and it is important to retain a good sense of priority andperspective. 1 lave fun. Stay fit. Be healthy!

By Lee SarokenAs I sit down to write this article about the Women's

Veterans Team, formally known as the Masters Team, and theWomen's Open Team, I am wondering if anyone reads this stuff. Itsuddenly dawned on me that if I put something weird or unusualwithin the context of this presentation I might get some feedback... so here I go.

1995 Sybil Ludington 50KRecord Falls In Relay

ByKatyD. QuinnWhat takes less than three hours, needs six people and receives

applause? Shattering a relay record three times! This year's Sybil Ludington50K saw three relay teams break the previous course record. The Masters teamof Gary Steinel/Nick Caswell broke the mark with a PR of 2:58:21 to takethird in the event, behind a stellar 2:54:16 finish for Paul Fendler and ScottAbercrombie and an amazing win bv Mark PeLeon and Scott Fisher in2 : 5 0 : 1 5 ! !

Bob Sweeney, no stranger to the winners circle in this event, took thetop honors in the individual 50K with an impressive 3:30:54 finish. (Ofparticular note is the fact that Bob suffered a punctured lung five months ago. What a terrific recovery!) TRRCs Anthony Galfano placed second with a4:01:53, followed by Ralph Balsam in 4:03:41.

This year's Sybil Ludington 50K road race and relay saw 29 mnnersset off to do the whole thing, and another 11 two-person teams participate inthe relay. The skys were a mix of sun and clouds and the temperatureshovered just under the 60 degree mark to make it a perfect day for the event.Race director David Farquhar and his able assistants had the course wellmarked (although a couple of mnners did miss a sign and wander off course),the water and Gatorade on the course ample, and the finishers party at theVFW well-stocked with refreshments (great job, Eileen).

One of the biggest surprises of the day was Carmelo Roldan completing the whole thing. Most surprised by this feat was Carmelo, himself, whohad set out to do a 20 mile training mn for the Vermont Cities Marathonscheduled later in May. He got so caught up in the fun that he just kept going, and going, and going. Great job, Carmelo!!

Long Run RecoveryTips from AR&FA

The most important thing you can do torecover from long runs is to restock your muscles withfuel, because muscle fatigue seems to be due mostlyto lack of energy.

Long distance runners with wide rangingperformance (half marathon 1:18 to 2:08, and marathon 2:50 to 4:20) ran a marathon, followed by agroup of tests. The results, reported by Jean-ClaudeChevrolet, Ph.D., and colleagues in Geneva, Switzerland, showed a decrease in breathing muscles' and legmuscles' force for more than 2 .5 hours after the race.

1 always felt this improved my ability to recover."

Ode To The Retiring RunnerBy Jim Bagg (aka K.F.)

The only regret, 1 may not fix,is the 100th Boston, in '96.

But then again, you never know,I just might, train to go!

Westchester Summer Twilight Track & Field Series Directors

The TRRC Summer Track Series has been run in conjunction with the Westchester Summer TwilightTrack & Field Series for approximately 5 years now. We feel that it has gone well and has been mutuallybeneficial for both series and groups. We are very appreciative of Anthony Galfano as TRRC SummerTr a c k S e r i e s D i r e c t o r .

We are hoping to increased TRRC member participation. There have been some circumstancesmaking this difficult.

We have dates on Tuesday's starting on July 1, running to August 15. All dates are currently scheduled at Hendrick Hudson High School - the Town of Cortlandt Recreation Department has been very supportive of us. We are hoping to add Yorktown High School. This information should be out in May (butafter press time).

We would like to see this event and series grow. Our purpose of the series is to advance running andTrack & Field among all ages.

If you have any suggestions regarding the series, please contact Anthony Galfano or Roy Arnesen(226-7064).

The track series can help add some speed to you running! We hope to see you this summer!

Sprinting and Bounding Drills For Runners(FromAR&FA)

Bycomparison, running shoes of the 1980s returned55% to 69% of stored energy on impact.

Take longer strides.
