Ah, 'twas a glorious day indeed, bagpipers strollin' through the crowd, playin 'their tunes. After the race. Wee Harry Neeson, Chief Leprechaun of the TRRC,handed out the awards. There was beer, soda, and popcorn aplenty, Ir ish music, and even a lad cookin' pancakes, which were enjoyed by all. Everyone became" I r i sh fo r t he day " lo ts o f g reen ou t f i t s , and fo l ks f rom fa r and nearc a m e t o r u n t h e r a c e . The Alcohol-Free Foot Race was held in Carmel on Sunday, April 10. It wasoffered by the National Council on Alcohol/Putnam, and was intended to providean alcohol-free event for the local community. The first-time event was very wellorganized. And it had a lot to offer besides the excitement of racing. There was anabundance of cookies, fruit and juice. There was entertainment by several localgroups, and a raffle of gifts donated by local sponsors.

At 9am, 106 people set off for a 2-mile run/walk. Although many of the participants were out for a stroll, some were interested in a speed workout. TimGiambalvo was first off the starting line. For a while, it looked as if he was tryingto pass John Hallinan in the lead car. Tim crossed the finish line in 12:50 to takethe first place award. First woman across the finish line was 8-year-old SarahGiovanetti of Kent. The 5-mile event was won by Scott Abercrombie in 29:17, andDiane Wagner (her first victory) in 35:49. The course, though flat, was hamperedby strong winds and difficult footing along two miles of gravelled road. There were103 participants in the 5-mile event.

    The followiug club members took home honors:Jim Harding, Carmel, 33:22, 3rd 15-19Doug Miller, Brewster, 30:01, 1st 20-29Mike Gossett, P'ville, 31:16, 3rd 20-29Mike Friess, Carmel, 30:33, 2nd 30-39Tom Walsh, Brewster, 32:00, 1st 40-49Wendy Lang, 40:29, 1st 40-49Ed Dillon, Carmel, 33:41, 3rd 40-49Joe Albanese, C'qua, 38:23, 1st 50-59John Orr, 38:35, 2nd 50-59Russ Uphoff, 42:08, 1st 60+

Denizens of the northcountr>% and particularly FDR Park, some TRRC members decided to move south for a quickraid on southern Westchester county. The occasion wasthe 19th annual running of the Abe Simon 15K Race, heldin Scarsdale. The Taconic invasion seems to have beenmotivated primarily by certain female members of thegroup who wished to capture the coveted Abe SimonTrophy. This trophy is awarded each year to the winningmale and female masters teams. Male teams consist of 5men 40 or over. Female teams are made up of 3 women,35 or older. The Taconic women, spearheaded by SusanIhen, along with Linda Geppcrt and Barbara Cirami (instigator of the invasion) ran away with the trophy andswept the masters division into the bargain. The men werealso in evidence at the awards ceremony as Pierce Brermaneasily topped the 60+ division. Brian \\heaton, recoveringfrom a back injury, and Don Villeneuve, tuning up forYonkers, also ran.
