LocationThe flagship campus of Park University is lo-cated on a historic site in Parkville, Mo., situ-ated on a bluff above the scenic Missouri River. The School for Extend-ed Learning has estab-lished campus centers

on military installations across the United States and Online. The School for Extended Learning has served the non-traditional, working adult student since 1972 by offering undergraduate programs in an accelerated format.

Our Graduate School is located at our Downtown Kansas City, Mo., Campus Center. Park also serves the Kansas City metropoli-tan area with campuses in Independence and Lexington, Mo. In addition to our military campus centers, Park also has a campus in Austin, Texas.

Beverley Byers-Pevitts, Ph.D., is President and CEO of Park University in Kansas City, Mo. and the university’s first woman president in its 131-year

history. Previous to coming to Park University in 2001, she served as Interim President and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Texas Woman’s University. Her previous administrative and faculty experiences in-clude Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Northern Iowa; and as Chair and Director of Graduate Studies of the Depart-ment of Theatre Arts at the University of Nevada. Dr. Byers-Pevitts is active locally and nationally. Her belief that the role of higher education is to be an active participant and contributor to the com-munity and the profession is apparent in her activities. She served as found-ing President of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE); as President of the Women’s Program of the American Theatre Association, and as the first editor of the ATHE Journal, Theatre Topics. Dr. Byers-Pevitts found-ed the first national conference for Women in Theatre and co-coordinated the first three conferences with funding from the Ford Foundation. She serves on the Council of Presidents for the NAIA; the Board of Direc-tors and Executive Committee of the Missouri Colleges Fund; the governing boards of the Liberty Memorial Association in which she chairs the Educa-tion Committee, KCPT (Kansas City Public Television) and KCREACHE (Kansas City Regional Access Consortium for Higher Education). She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Platte County Economic Development Coun-cil, a member of the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Kansas City and Independence Chambers of Commerce and a Rotarian. In April 2005, Ingram’s Magazine named her one of the Power Elite of Kansas City in recognition of the results of her leadership at Park University. Nationally, she is on the board of the Women’s Museum, a member of the American Council on Education’s Leadership Network for International Education and a commissioner for the Office of Women in Higher Education

for ACE. She is a member of the League of Professional Theatre and the Na-tional Theatre Conference. President Byers-Pevitts is a professionally produced and published playwright. Additionally, she has had numerous articles published in educa-tional journals and books, and has lectured widely on leadership, access and equity in higher education, women’s health, academic restructuring, faculty roles, distance learning, and the future of universities. President Byers-Pevitts received her Ph.D., an interdisciplinary degree in English, Philosophy, Speech Communication and Theatre, and an M.A. in Theatre from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She received a B.A. in English from Kentucky Wesleyan. Her postdoctoral study was conducted at the Institutes for Higher Education at Harvard University. In May 2003, Dr. Byers-Pevitts was presented the degree of Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Kentucky Wesleyan College. In the past four years at Park, under her leadership the University bud-get has doubled, the endowment has increased 54 percent, and enrollment has improved by 29 percent. Park is a leader in delivering education to the military, with campus centers in 23 states at 39 military installations, and has three campuses in Kansas City and one in Austin, Texas. Park also is a national leader in Online education, with students across the United States and overseas who are enrolled in Online courses. President Byers-Pevitts’ vision is to make the world a better place through education by maximizing individuals’ creative, educational, and en-trepreneurial potential; to prepare global learners through cultural aware-ness to lead, to communicate, and to conduct business in a world market-place. She is honored to represent Park University’s diverse community of learners and scholars.

Claude W. English is in his 13th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving as Park’s AD since January 1996. English also

coached the Pirate men’s basketball squad for 13 seasons, retiring from coaching at the end of the 2004-05 season. Through English’s tenure as ath-letics director, Park athletics has un-dergone vast improvements, includ-ing the addition of women’s golf and baseball as intercollegiate sports. Additionally, English has over-seen numerous facility improve-ments, including the 1,500-seat Ju-lian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, as well as Breckon Sports Center, which houses Park’s men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and ad-ministrative offices. Breckon Sports Center, named after Dr. Donald J. Breckon, also hous-es an indoor practice facility for fall and spring sports. As athletics director, English has seen 112 student-athletes earn All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, while 77 individuals were named NAIA All-Americans. In addition, Park has won 26 conference champion-ships, 14 region championships, and the Pirates have advanced to 25 na-tional tournaments since 2002. During the 2007-08 season, Park made history under English’s watch, winning its second men’s volleyball National Invitational Tournament title in April, followed by the school’s first-ever regular-season conference championship in softball. Women’s golf also advanced to its first-ever national tournament af-ter winning its first-ever Region IV championship, accomplishing the feat in the program’s fifth year of varsity status. In addition to the nine Park squads that advanced to national competition, three more sports – women’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball – were within one game of qualifying for national tournaments.

The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a

school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstand-ing sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blaz-ers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basket-ball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the East-ern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 career record in 17 seasons as a head coach.

Credentials are issued on a game-by-game basis and a formal request must be issued to the Park Uni-versity Sports Information Office. Only photographers on assignment from an accredited media agency will be issued credentials. Photographers are required to abide by the guidelines set forth by the NCAA and NAIA on shooting limi-tations from the sidelines. Those not complying with the guidelines may be removed.

Steve Wilson begins his second year as the Director of Sports Information, overseeing publicity and operational efforts for all 15 sports at Park Uni-

versity. Wilson is the primary contact for both women’s soccer and women’s volleyball in the fall, men’s basket-ball and men’s volleyball in the winter, and baseball

and women’s golf in the spring. He is also responsible for overseeing all publications and online efforts within the department, including www.parkathletics.com, the official Web site of Pirate athletics. Additionally, Wilson supervises game-day staff at all home events as well as other administrative duties within the Department of Athletics. He also serves as the play-by-play voice of the Pirates at select events. A 2004 graduate of Kansas State University, Wilson began his career in sports information as a Graduate Assistant at Kansas Wesleyan University dur-ing the 2004-05 school year, assisting with the Coyote football, men’s basketball, baseball and women’s basketball programs. In 2005, he joined the athletic media relations staff at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he was the primary contact for women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball, while also assisting with publicity efforts in the Bobcat football program. While at Texas State, Wilson also provided basketball and baseball play-by-play on KTSW-FM. Away from San Marcos, Wilson assisted on the game-day staffs of the 2005 United States Basketball League Championship, the 2006 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in San Antonio and the 2006 NCAA Baseball Regional in Austin, Texas. During the 2005 football season, he also assisted the game-day efforts of the New Orleans Saints, who were relocated to San Antonio by Hurricane Katrina. Prior to his work in sports information, Wilson was a play-by-play voice and account manager for KSAL-AM in Salina, Kan., as well as a contributing writer and assistant editor for Rivals.com College Baseball. He received top honors in the student-intern play-by-play category by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters in 2003. Wilson and his wife, Sarah, reside in Roeland Park, Kan.

Tyler Price enters his first year as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Park. Price is the primary contact for both men’s soccer and cross

country in the fall, women’s basketball and indoor track and field in the winter, as well as softball and outdoor track and field in the spring.

Price will join SID Steve Wilson as the primary liaison between Park’s athlet-ics programs and the public. The two will be responsible for serving the needs of not only the media, but also coaches, student-athletes, supporters and fans. A 2008 graduate of Kansas State University, Price spent three years in the Sports Information Department from 2005-08 as a Student Assistant. Along with assisting in the promotion of all 12 varsity sports at K-State, Price’s main respon-sibility was serving as the primary contact for the women’s equestrian program. After graduation, Price joined the Sports Information staff at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). After a few months promoting the NAIA, Price made the trek a few miles north to Parkville. The Olathe, Kan. native also worked in sports broadcasting early in his ca-reer. Price spent two summers working at KSHB-TV in Kansas City as an Associate Sports Producer for the 38 Sport Spot television program and all evening news-casts. Price is an avid Kansas City sports fan and enjoys watching all Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Kansas State football games.

Price and his wife, Jenny, also a graduate of Kansas State, reside in Olathe, Kan.

Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area.

In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team.

Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Coun-try Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and midway through January.

After a second round appearance in the NAIA national tournament and a 13-6 overall record in 2007, the No. 13 preseason ranked Park men’s soccer team has a lot of suc-

cess to carry with them into the 2008 season. But with the loss of some key players and a grueling sched-ule ahead of them, the Pirates must depend on some of its solid returners and some new faces to lead the way. Park will take the field this season without three key players from the 2007 squad including third team NAIA All-America for-ward Mirsad Dzilic. Dzilic, finished the 2007 season with 13 goals scored and seven assists. The Zvornik, Bosnia native finished his career with 51 goals scored and 19 as-sists. Along with Dzilic, the Pirates will look to rebound without the services of second team All Conference re-cipients Milan Ivanovic and Desmand Yankey. “We have a very young team,” head coach Efrem Shimlis said. “We will probably have a few freshman start-ing this season. We feel like they can handle themselves. But it will take some time for them to get there feet wet, because we probably have one of the toughest schedules we have ever had here. The players will have to step up to the challenge.” Two freshman who may get a look to start for the Pirates are Ramon and Robert Palmer from Jamaica. Ramon, a skilled offensive player, may get a starting nod at the midfielder position, while Robert has showed great strength at the defender position. The Pirates will also return some fire power offen-sively and defensively from the 2007 squad. Second team All-America winner, James Katajwa will look to add to his 13 goals scored from last year, while Simon Senfuka, a sopho-more midfielder from Kampala, Uganda will return for Park with

his five goals scored and four assists in 2007. Defensively, goalkeeper Matt Heiman returns to the Pirates for the 2008 tilt. Heimann, started 11 games for Park last season and collected 35 saves. One of Park’s top defenders, Oscar Juma, also returns to Park in 2008. Juma, a senior from Nairobi, Kenya earned a spot on the NAIA All America Honorable mention squad for 2007. “In the first six games this season if we are not on our toes we could have a rough start to our season,” Shimlis said. “But at

the same time I know that it will help us grow toward the end of the season and eventu-ally the playoffs.” Four of Park’s first six opponents are ranked nationally including its first op-ponent Lindsey Wilson, who is ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll and will face Park on August 30. Park’s second op-ponent one day later is Lee University who holds the preseason No. 17 spot in the NAIA national Rankings. Park will take on No. 8 ranked Graceland on September 13 and No. 21 ranked Benedictine on the road on Septem-ber 17. “My expectations for this season are to compete to win ev-ery game,” Shimlis said. “We are going to play exciting, attractive soccer and we want to create a lot of opportunities with all of the speed on our team. In the end our goal is to play the best we can every game.”

OPPONENTS Three games against 2007 NAIA National Tournament teams, three more against teams who finished the season in the Top 25 and a Sept. 10 match at annual rival William Jewell highlight the 15-game regular season schedule for the 2008 Park University men’s soccer team. The season begins for the Pirates – who finished last year 13-5 in the NAIA National Tournament – on Aug. 30 in St. Charles, Mo., for the first of two games in the Lindenwood Classic against last season’s No. 2 ranked team, Lindsey Wilson. After the match with LWC, a 2007 NAIA quarterfinalist, the Pirates will conclude play in St. Charles on Aug. 31, taking on last year’s No. 17 team at year’s end, Lee University. Park’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. against perennial NAIA power Oklahoma Christian, and on Sept. 10, the Pirates travel to Liberty, Mo., to take on Townsend Cup rival Wil-liam Jewell. The Cardinals entered last year’s game on Sept. 12 ranked No. 1, but then 14th-ranked Park spoiled it for Jewell 3-2 at Julian Field. The 2008 rematch is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Jewell’s Patterson Field at Greene Stadium. After the rivalry tilt with the Cards, Park returns home for another date on the pitch with an NAIA tournament team, tak-ing on last year’s No. 7 ranked squad at season’s end, Graceland University on Sept. 13. Following the contest with the Yellow Jackets, Park travels for its next two matches, taking on Benedictine Sept. 17 and Columbia Sept. 20, and on Sept. 24, Park closes out the month

of September against Grand View, a team that missed the NAIA tournament last year but did finish the season ranked No. 24 in the NAIA. October begins with a rematch of last season’s Region IV Championship when Kansas Wesleyan travels to Julian Field on Oct. 1 for a 5 p.m. contest, and conference play begins in the MCAC on Oct. 4, as Park hosts York at 3 p.m. in Parkville. Oct. 7 sends the Pirates back to the road for three more matches, beginning at Baker and continuing Oct. 11 at Bellevue in a rematch of last season’s MCAC title game. Park con-cludes the road stretch Oct. 18 at Oklahoma Wesleyan

before returning home to conclude the regular season, starting Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. against Southern Nazarene. SNU is the third NAIA tournament team on the schedule for Park, and the Pirates conclude the regular season and the MCAC portion of the regular-season schedule on Oct. 25, hosting Cen-tral Christian at 3 p.m. Postseason play begins Nov. 8 with the MCAC Semifinals, and a week later, on Nov. 15, the MCAC will decide its men’s soccer tournament champion. Locations and times will be an-nounced according to league standings at season’s end. The NAIA tournament begins Nov. 22 with first-round play on campus sites, and the championship tournament begins Dec. 1, in Fresno, Calif. All Park University home matches will be played at Julian Field, on the northwest corner of the Parkville Campus.

Head Coach Efrem Shimlis

Efrem Shimlis enters his eighth season as head coach of the Park University Men’s Soccer team. He accepted the head coaching position after three years as an assistant

coach in the program, and a four-year career as a player for the Pirates.

In 2007, Shimlis led the Pirates to a 13-6 overall record and finished 4-0 in the MCAC. The men were crowned MCAC Regular

Season Champs and Region IV Tournament Champions. Park took second in the MCAC Conference Tournament, falling 1-0 in overtime to Bellevue University. Shimlis was recognized by both the MCAC and Region IV as Coach of the Year.

Shimlis took the Pirates down south to Olathe, Kan. for the 2007 NAIA National Tournament. Park was knocked out in the first round of the tournament by No. 5 Simon Fraser (B.C.), 1-0. The Pirates didn’t leave the tournament empty handed and were recognized with the 2007 NELS Dahlquist Team Sportsmanship Award. Shimlis had four athletes recognized as All-Americans, and eight athletes were named to Region IV and MCAC teams.

The Pirates also spent the entire 2007 season nationally ranked on the NAIA Top-25. Park was a preseason No. 15 pick and peaked at No. 14 twice throughout the season.

The Pirates finished the 2006 season at 13-8-1 and Shimlis took the Pirates to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the NAIA Tournament in 2006. Park defeated Goshen College out of Indiana in penalty kicks, advancing to Round Two of the tournament. Their quest

for the NAIA title ended in Round Two for a second year in a row, falling 3-2 to No. 3 Webber International (Fla.).In his seven seasons as head coach, Shimlis has compiled a 107-37-9 record.

Before his appointment at Park, Shimlis collected a wide range of coaching and professional playing experience. Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Shimlis also played for the Pirates from 1992-1996.

His extensive experience includes playing professionally for the 1997 World Champion Kansas City Attack of the National Professional Soccer League, as well as the Day-tona Speed Kings and the Columbus Comets.

In the spring of 2008, Shimlis co-founded the youth soc-cer club Harambe Futbol Club. Harambe F.C. is based in the Kansas City metro area and has 14 boys and girls soc-cer teams. Shimlis is the head coach of U-11 girls Haram-be F.C. Fury and U-15 boys Harambe F.C. United.

Shimlis, who resides in Parkville, Mo., earned a bachelor’s degree from Park in history in 1997.

2007 Season Review

The Park University Men’s Soccer Team’s 2007 season

ended in the second half of the NAIA National Tournament in Olathe, Kan. at the hands of No. five-seeded Simon Fraser (B.C.). The Pirates lost out in the first round of the National Tournament despite having several opportunities to tie up the game, including one shot taken by defender Oscar Juma from half field just sailing over the cross bar with 1:37 left. While the Pirates didn’t advance to the next round, they did walk away from the National Tournament with the 2007 NELS Dahlquist Team Sportsman-ship Award.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Pirates still had plenty of suc-cesses in the 2007 season. In front of a home crowd at Julian Field, the Pirates were crowned Region IV champs posting a 2-1 win over Kan-sas Wesleyan. The Pirates earned a shot at the Region IV title with a 2-1 overtime victory over Friends University in the semi-final match.

The Pirates felt they had some-thing to prove entering the Region IV Tournament after a disappointing MCAC Tournament championship game loss to Bellevue University. The Pirates, the 2007 MCAC Regular Season Champs, dropped a 0-1 overtime loss to the Bruins on Oc-tober 27. Bellevue University broke a six-game winning streak fir Park, a streak that started on Sept. 29 with a 3-0 over Grand View College. The six-game streak also highlighted the Pirates strong defensive efforts, as the Pirates did not give up a goal in that time.

The Pirates also spent the entire 2007 season on the NAIA top-25 poll. They were a preseason No. 15 pick and peaked at No. 14 twice throughout the year. Park spent most the 2007 season ranked No. 18 on the NAIA top-25 poll.

The 2007 Park Men’s Soccer team also produced one NAIA Second-Team All-American, a Third-Team All-American and two All-American honorable mentions.

The Pirates had eight All-Region Region IV players and eight All-MCAC athletes recognized. Park defender Oscar Juma was the MCAC Defensive Player of the Year and midfielder James Katajwa earned MCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Tough “D”

The offensive success of the Park University Men’s Soccer Team was balanced out by the tough

Pirate defense. Led by MCAC Defensive Player of the Year Oscar Juma, Region IV second-team and MCAC first-team defender Milan Ivanovic and Region IV Honorable Mention and MCAC second-team Matt Semkin.

The three defenders started in the back for the Pirates all season long. The Park University defense only gave up 20 goals in 19 games played. They held opponents to 167 attempted shots and only allowed 77 of those shots to be placed on frame.

The defense was also able to provide a little bit of offense as well. Ivanovic scored one goal and had four assists and Juma scored on a penalty kick in the regular season.A Night to Remember

The then-No. 20 Park Univer-sity knocked off then-No. 1 William Jewell in an exciting 3-2 thriller on Sept. 12 at Julian Field in front of 832 fans.

Simon Senfuka struck a diagonal ball across to Dzilic, who ran onto the ball. Dzilic then took several touches on the ball before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Andy Shields in the 64th minute.

The Pirates struck again in the 73rd minute, with Katajwa getting his first goal of the game and giv-ing Park a 2-0 lead. Dzilic started the drive, switching the ball over to Katajwa on the right side of the field. Katajwa took on Cardinal goalkeeper Shields, beat him and then slotted the ball in between three William Jewell players for the goal. The intense game didn’t end there, with Kevin Nekuda bending a ball in off of a corner kick in the 78th minute. Katawja fired in the game winning goal in the 80th minute off of a free kick from about 25 yards out.Deadly Duo: Dzilic and Katajwa

Park University had spaced out scoring all season long but two stood out on the offensive end for the Pirates. Mirsad Dzilic and James Katajwa led the team and the MCAC with 13 goals and seven assists a piece. Dzilic also led the MCAC with 81 shots and 42 shots on goal.

After falling just one game short of qualifying for the NAIA national tournament in 2007, the Park University women’s soccer squad looks to focus on the upcoming season and

look to return to national prominence. Park, who finished 12-5-2 in 2007, ended its season with a loss to Kansas Wesleyan, 3-0, in the Region IV Tournament Final. Park has reached the NAIA tournament five of the last six seasons and hopes to make the trip back to Daytona Beach, Fla. “Our team still has a bad taste in their mouth from losing in the regional finals last year,” head coach Ken Hefner said. “But a lot of our players have tasted the national tournament as well. So there are some expectations for our returners this season. They are passing that along very well to everyone else.” The Pirates return three All-Conference second team players including Natalie Parker, a junior forward who scored ten goals and added 14 assists for the Park in 2007. Also, Dena Pires, a solid junior midfielder who has great range on the field and Sophie Champman returns for the Pirates and will the take the reigns as team captain in 2008. Monika Stoiber of Hungary has also impressed coach Hefner in the offseason and has solidified herself as the number one goalkeeper. In 2007, Stoiber started eight games and collected 33 saves. “The new players we have coming in are fitting in mag-nificently,” Hefner said. “We may be more talented overall than we have ever been in quite a while. Right now we are finding the right 11 players that fit together on the field.” Two newcomers this season have already stepped up to the challenge to join that eleven. Nori Gedei a freshman from Hungary, can play both the midfielder and forward po-sition and freshman Ashley Maxwell, a freshman from Park Hill South High School, looks to find some playing time at the forward spot. Four of Park’s first five opponents are ranked nationally

including its first opponent, John Brown, who is ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll and will face Park on August 29. Park’s second opponent one day later is Bethel (Tenn.), who holds the preseason No. 18 spot in the NAIA national Rankings. Park will take on No. 14 ranked William Jewell on September 10 and No. 10 ranked Graceland at home on September 13. The Pirates landed No. 26 in the 2008 NAIA Top 25 Coaches Preseason voting, just five points shy of No. 25 Spring Arbor. “I think we play as competitive a schedule as anybody around,” Hefner said. “We definitely have our work cut out for us.

We have to come out ready to play from the start. If we don’t, then we will have to reshape some things as we prepare for con-ference play. Ultimately, I think the schedule is set up to be very successful for us. “

OPPONENTS The Park women’s soccer schedule is highlighted by two matches against NAIA national tournament qualifiers and another two against emerging NCAA Division I opponents in a neutral field Division I tournament at the University of Northern Iowa. The season begins Aug. 29, in Siloam Springs, Ark., when the Pirates take on tournament host John Brown University, followed by an Aug. 30 battle with Bethel (Tenn.). Park comes home on Sept. 6 for a 1 p.m. home opener – the first of six home games in 2008 – against Oklahoma Christian before traveling across the metro area to Liberty, Mo., to play Wil-liam Jewell at 5 p.m. The Cardinals were a national tournament qualifier last sea-son, finishing the year ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Top 25 coaches’ poll. The Pirates will take on a second-straight ranked team from a season ago on Sept. 13, when No. 17 Graceland University visits Julian Field, and on Sept. 17, Park travels to Atchison, Kan., and Benedictine College, where the Ravens finished last season receiving votes in the poll. Nine days off precedes one of the season’s biggest tests, beginning Sept. 26 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where Park will open the UNI Classic against the University of North Dakota, an opponent that is transitioning from NCAA Division II status to Division I ranks. Two days later, the Pirates take on a second transitioning school, playing the University of South Dakota to close out play at Northern Iowa. Park opens the month of October in a rematch of last sea-

son’s Region IV final, hosting Kansas Wesleyan in a 7 p.m. contest on Oct. 1 at Julian Field, and conference play begins Oct. 4 in Parkville when York travels to Park at 1 p.m., beginning a streak of four-straight within the MCAC. The Pirates travel to Bellevue on Oct. 11 and Oklahoma Wes-leyan on Oct. 18, before coming home to close out the confer-ence stretch on Oct. 25 against Central Christian at 1 p.m. A trip to MidAmerica Nazarene on Oct. 29 interrupts the conference slate in Olathe at 3 p.m., and on Nov. 1, Park closes its regular-season and MCAC schedules at home against the College of St. Mary at Noon. The MCAC Semifinal is scheduled for Nov. 8 and the confer-ence champion will be crowned Nov. 15, with NAIA first-round play getting underway Nov. 22 on campus sites. The NAIA season comes to a close Dec. 1-6 in Daytona Beach, Fla., with the NAIA National Tournament.

Ken Hefner is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Park University women’s soccer program, entering the season with a mark of 36-19-5 at Park, while his

overall record, including 29 wins as a men’s head coach, is 189-152-14. In 2007, Hefner had the Pirates within one win of a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., and the NAIA tournament, but a loss to Kansas Wesleyan in the Region IV final ended the season at 12-5-2. The Pirates were MCAC regular-season tri-champions and MCAC tournament champions, while also producing an honon-rable mention All-American during the year. In 2006, Hefner led the Pirates to a regular season MCAC championship, going 5-0 in conference play. Park dropped the tournament final to Bellevue, 1-0 but beat Kansas Wesleyan in the Region IV Tournament, advancing to the school’s fifth consecutive appearance at the NAIA National Tournament. Hefner led the women past College of the Southwest in Round One but then fell to No. 4 Houghton College out of New York in Round Two. Hefner was honored as the Region IV Coach of the Year and MCAC Co-Coach of the Year. Hefner ranks as the eighth winningest coaches in NAIA history, owning 160 career women’s wins in two seasons at Park, seven seasons at Lindsey Wilson College (1993-1999) and three seasons at Tennessee Wesleyan College (1990-93). Additionally, Hefner posted 19 wins as the head coach at NCAA Division I Arkansas State, helping his career coaching wins total to eighth all-time among NAIA women’s coaches. He also has 29 men’s wins from his time at Tennessee Wesleyan to push his overall career total to 189 wins. While at Lindsey Wilson, Hefner’s teams advanced to the national tournament twice (1998, 1999) and achieved a final national ranking of fifth following the 1999 season. In seven seasons at Lindsey Wilson, he posted a 93-46-5 record and had 11 players earn NAIA All-America honors. In 1999, Hefner was tabbed to lead a start-up soccer pro-gram at Arkansas State, which began play in 2000. His teams qualified for the Sun Belt Conference tournament four years in a row under his guidance and had three players named to the all-conference team from 2000-2003. In addition to Hefner’s success on the field, his players have enjoyed success in the classroom. At Lindsey Wilson, he had 18 academic all-conference selections and eight NAIA All-America

Scholar-Athletes. During his time at Arkansas State, his team owned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better in six of seven semesters while he was at ASU. Hefner, who owns a United States Soccer Federation Na-tional “B” License, an Advanced National License and an NSCAA National Diploma, earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from West Georgia College in 1987. He and his wife, Dawn, have three children, Matthew (22), Megan (21) and Mackenzie (17).

Park University finished the 2007 season one win shy of national tournament competition, but the momentum gained from the 2007 campaign could still boost the Pirates to a new level dur-

ing the 2008 season. Park ended the conference season tied with Bellevue and Col-lege of Saint Mary at 4-1 to share the regular season MCAC crown, but in the MCAC tournament, the Pirates beat Central Christian 5-0 in the semifinals before taking care of Bellevue 2-0 to earn the tournament title. The loss in the NAIA Region IV final dropped the Pirates to 12-5-2 on the season. Park had one honorable mention NAIA All-American, Maria Ruiz, and four players that landed on All-NAIA Region IV teams. The Pirates also had seven All-MCAC performers and two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Ruiz was also named MCAC Offensive Player of the Year at the end of the 2007 season. The Pirates spent much of the year in and out of the NAIA Coach-es Top 25, beginning the season ranked No. 12, and Park opened the year with a 5-4 win at Julian Field over John Brown University. Park slipped in the second game of the year, falling 2-1 to Baker University on Sept. 5, but a momentum-boost came on Sept. 8 when Park traveled to NCAA Division II Missouri Western State University, and the Pirates came away with a 2-1 victory in overtime against the Grif-fons. The Pirates then went on a two-game skid without a win, falling 3-1 to No. 23 William Jewell, followed by a 1-1 tie at Hastings before getting back on track at home with a 2-1 win on Sept. 19 over No. 22 Benedic-tine. Park would then lose to Graceland, followed by a shut-out of Mi-dAmerica Nazarene and then a two-overtime tie at Oklahoma Christian on Sept. 29. The Pirates turned it on in conference play, however, beginning the MCAC season with a 7-0 win at home against Oklahoma Wesleyan, followed by a non-confer-ence 6-0 belting of Sterling. Central Christian was next in the streak of what would be four shut-outs, as Park topped the Tigers 8-0 before blasting York 11-0 on the road. Bellevue touched Park for two goals on Oct. 20, but the Pirates came away with the win, 4-2, setting up a league title match with College of Saint Mary on Oct. 22, which was a make-up of a rained-out game in Nebraska earlier in the season. CSM got the better of the Pirates to close the regular season, though, creating the three-way title tie with a 3-2 two-overtime victory in Omaha. The MCAC tournament would still land in Parkville through Longo tie-breaking procedures, and Park took advan-tage by winning a pair of games to earn the season’s second MCAC crown. Park then lined up at Salina Stadium in Salina, Kan., to play Bellevue in the first round of the NAIA Region IV tourna-ment, beating the Bruins for the third time in the season, 4-0, to advance to the region final.

TOUGH IN GOAL Park utilized two goal keepers during the 2007 season, as Monika Stoiber played in 12 games as a freshman, allowing 16 goals and posting 33 saves in 890 minutes played. Megan Newland also saw nearly 885 minutes in goal for the Pirates last season, giving up 8 goals and posting 42 saves on the year. Pirate goal keepers gave up 24 goals on the season for an average of 1.22 per game, while scoring 3.44 per game as a team. The Pirates also pitched eight shut-outs on the year.

RUIZ CRACKS 100-GOAL MARKMCAC Offensive Player of the Year Maria Ruiz scored 28 goals on the season, pushing her career mark past the 100-goal mark to 109, which is good for seventh all-time in the NAIA. Ruiz is two spots behind Leah Snider, who ended her career with 119 goals to land fifth on the NAIA’s list. Snider played at Park between 1992 and 1995. Ruiz also led the team in points, with 65, adding nine assists while her 106 shots were a team-high as well as a team-high 65 shots on goal.

Under ninth year head coach Peggy Tuter, the Park Uni-versity women’s volleyball team looks to capture its fifth straight winning season this year, but with seven new

players on a squad that lost an All-American and other senior leadership, the Pirates will need many new players to become impact players from the start. “We’ve added lots of new talent and helped our outside hitters a little bit more than last year,” Tuter said. “We are still trying to find a middle hitter to step up and solidify that spot.” Filling that middle hitter position will be key to Park’s success this year as Aigline Yoke, who was third in the country in hitting efficiency and an Honorable Mention All-American in 2007 has graduated from Park. There are a number of new players who are looking to take over that spot on the floor including Stephanie Bloodgood a freshman from Franklin, Tenn. Also, Shareikka Theus-Downey, a transfer from Independence Community College (Kan.) could see action in the open middle spot. “We are deep everyone on the court except for the middle area,” Tuter said. “We have a chance to surprise some people if we can get the middle hitter spot filled. If everyone stays healthy, we have a chance to be successful.” Park’s women’s volleyball team also features a unique set of players on their squad. Five members of the team hail from Brazil including three freshman, Mariana Vogado, a solid outside hitter, Rafaella Chaves, a quality right setter who could see an abundance of playing time this season and Gabriela Garcia, a setter from Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil. Daniela Martins, a senior right side hitter, made the move from the Pirate women’s basketball program and now solely plays for the women’s volleyball team. Martins looks to help out Park improve in its number of kills and blocks. Finally, sophomore Carolina Faria of Jundiai, Brazil will look for playing time in the all important libero position. Faria was the 2007 MCAC Libero of the Year, leading the team with better than 3.5 digs per game. The Pirates also named its two team captains for the 2008 season, senior Allison Block and senior Alison Joens were voted in by their teammates to lead the squad this season. Park will enter the season with a tough schedule on the horizon, highlighted by 12 opponents and 14 matches against teams with more than 20 wins from the 2007 season, including two against national tournament qualifier Bellevue University. “Last year we didn’t have any glaring injuries and that was very promising,” Tuter said. “So this year we hope to continue to stay healthy. The last four years we have had a winning record, now it’s the time to step it up this year and move forward.”

OPPONENTS Park University has uncovered its 2008 Women’s Volleyball Schedule, highlighted by 12 opponents and 14 matches against teams with more than 20 wins from the 2007 season, including two against national tournament qualifier Bellevue University, who also won crowns in both the MCAC and Region IV.

The season begins for the Pirates - who were 18-14 last season and 7-7 in the MCAC - with a set of exhibition tune-ups on Aug. 20 at Breckon Sports Center, followed by a road contest at Kansas Wesleyan and four neutral-floor games in the C of O Mazzio’s Classic against Freed Hardeman, Harris-Stowe State, Bethany and Bethel. It marks the second-straight year to see the Pirates open against the Coyotes, who were 27-8 last season including one of the nation’s best winning streaks at 18-straight before an NAIA Region IV championship loss to Bellevue. Park won the season opener last year, 3-1. Freed Hardeman poses a challenge in the year’s second match after beginning last season with 15-straight on the way to a 30-5 campaign and a TranSouth Athletic Conference Champi-onship. After the C of O event, the Pirates open conference play against Central Christian College on Sept. 9 at Breckon Sports Center, followed by four more neutral-floor contests in the Hast-ings Invitational. Park opens the event against Oklahoma City, who was a semifinalist in Region VI last season before losing to 18th-ranked Texas-Brownsville. The Stars were 34-10 last season and 8-4 in the Sooner Ath-letic Conference, finishing second in the league. The Pirates finish day one against Dordt, who was 32-9 last season, tying for fourth in the GPAC with a conference mark of 11-5. Day two in Hastings begins with Doane and ends with Con-cordia University. Graceland visits Breckon Sports Center on Sept. 15 for the season’s second home match, followed by a two-match road swing in Nebraska that puts the conference schedule into full swing. Haskell Indian Nations University visits Parkville on Sept. 23 before an Oct. 1 break in the conference slate that sends the

Pirates to Baker, followed by a home contest on Oct. 7 against MidAmerica Nazarene. The St. Ambrose Fall Classic takes place Oct. 10-11 before conference play resumes Oct. 14 at Central Christian, and the Pi-rates come home on Oct. 17 against Bellevue for the first of three two-match home stands, concluding on Nov. 4 with senior night against cross-town rival William Jewell. Conference play concludes Nov. 8 at College of Saint Mary, followed by the MCAC tournament Nov. 13-15. Peggy Tuter enters her ninth season as the head women’s volleyball coach at Park University. She has compiled a 143-142 record at the helm of the

Pirate volleyball program since 2000. In 2007, Tuter led the Pirates to an overall mark of 18-14 with a 7-7 finish in conference play, ending the year in the Region IV tournament. Tuter also added another All-American, as Aigline Yoke was an honorable mention honoree after staying in the NAIA’s top 10 in hitting efficiency during the season. Additionally, Park University women’s volleyball was awarded with a pair of academic honors in 2007 after landing two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes at season’s end. The team was named an NAIA Scholar team in July, and later in the month, Park women’s volleyball earned its first ever Academic Team distinction from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), making Park one of 22 NAIA schools and one of 353 schools overall to earn the academic distinction. In each of the three seasons prior to 2007, Tuter guided the Pirates to 25-win seasons, posting a 25-13 mark in 2004 and a 25-14 record in 2005, followed by a 27-11 overall mark in 2006. Following the 2004 season, the conference coaches honored Tuter as the MCAC Coach of the Year. In 2005, the Pirates qualified for both the MCAC and Region IV postseason tournaments, and in 2006, Park made it to the Region IV semifinals before losing to eventual NAIA tournament qualifier College of Saint Mary. In her first season at Park, Tuter notched her 400th career win, which earned recognition by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Tuter came to Park after coaching at the junior college level for Longview Community College in Lee’s Summit, Mo., since 1985. In those 15 years, Tuter acquired a career record of 387-274. Tuter also served as Physical Education Department Coordinator and Instructor at Blue River College in Blue Springs, Mo., during that time. Tuter also has worked as a committee and polling representative for NJCAA District 16 as well as holding various titles within the coaching ranks in the NAIA, MCAC and Region IV.

Her professional memberships include the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the United States Volleyball Association (USA-VB). She earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Missouri State University in 1977 and earned a master’s from CMSU in 1985. Peggy and her husband, Danny, have two children, Jennifer and Jeff.

Park University wasn’t able to get its fourth-straight 25-win season in 2007, but the Pirates were still one of the area’s most competitive collegiate volleyball

squads, going 18-14 on the year with a 7-7 mark through a tough MCAC schedule. The Pirates had an NAIA Honorable Mention All-Ameri-can in Aigline Yoke, who was also a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete along with fellow senior Lavinia Vaitai. Park also had three All-NAIA Region IV performers and five All-MCAC team members during the year. Perhaps the team’s greatest accomplishment, though, came in the classroom, where the Pirate volleyball squad was one of three Park University teams named an NAIA Scholar Team at season’s end, and for the first time in school history, Park received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award in June 2008.

THE SEASON Kansas Wesleyan University visited Breckon Sports Cen-ter to open the 2007 campaign, and Park opened the year with a bang, winning 3-1. However, the record would even quickly, as Park traveled to Graceland to close out the month of August, falling 3-1 to the Yellow Jackets in Lamoni, Iowa. Park’s largest winning streak of the year followed through the next six matches, beginning with a 3-1 decision over Missouri Valley College in the second home contest of the season. That win was followed by four-straight victories in the C of O Mazzio’s Classic, as Park dropped only two games in beating Harris-Stowe State, Bethel, Robert Morris and Tabor in Point Lookout. The Pirates then opened conference play at home with a 3-0 win over Central Christian College, bringing the win streak to six and im-proving to 7-1 on the year. Park lost 3-of-4 matches in tournament play at Hastings College, followed by back-to-back road losses in conference play at Peru State and Bellevue. The Pirates were back on track with three-straight in conference play, going on the road to beat Central Christian and returning home for wins over Haskell Indian Nations University and Oklahoma Wesleyan. The MCAC mid-season classic, which will not return to the 2008 schedule, followed, and after losing to C of O on its home floor in the first match, Park got shut-out victories over College of Saint Mary and Oklahoma Wesleyan to finish 2-1 in the three-match in-season confer-ence tournament. William Jewell took the annual Townsend Cup match on Oct. 18 in Liberty, but the Pirates rebounded against another HAAC opponent a night later, getting a five-game win over Baker University that sparked a four-match winning streak, including three-straight shut-outs of Haskell, Purdue-North Central and Grace University. A loss to Illinois-Springfield ended the non-conference slate and also started a season-ending skid, as Park fell in back-to-back confer-ence matches in the regular season to Peru State and Bellevue, followed by a 3-0 loss to College of the Ozarks in the NAIA Region IV Tournament at Bellevue University.

AN ALL-AMERICAN EFFORT Aigline Yoke’s All-American effort in 2007 helped Park to its fourth-consecutinve winning season, placing the senior on both the MCAC and Region IV first teams. Yoke was No. 3 in the NAIA in hitting efficiency, posting a .438 hitting percentage with 4.51 kills per game, which also ranked No. 23 in the NAIA. She was also the team’s leading blocker, recording 116 total blocks on the season.

Gabriela Carvalho was also a key statistical leader for the Pirates, passing out 10.5 assists per game to total 1,223 assists for the season from her setting position. Carolina Faria led the defensive effort as the only Pirate with more than 500 digs, getting 544 to average 4.6 per game. For her efforts, Faria was named MCAC Libero of the Year, while Allison Block was second defensively for the Pirates with 382 digs, 3.3 per game.

ChampionS of CharaCter aCtivitieS• Park Athletics participated in Habitat for Humanity in a department-wide public-service effort.

• Park University Athletic programs participated in the DeSoto (Kan.) School District’s YouthFriends in the spring semester of 2008

• Two current student-athletes, a former student-athlete and a coach spent a day in June moving 4,000 books from the home of the late Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann to the Park University library.

• The Park men’s and women’s basketball teams read to el-ementary students at Prairie Point Elementary School during the season.

• Park baseball volunteered its time to the Ironman Youth Baseball Academy, conducting a holiday clinic in December and scoring hitting leagues in January. Head coach Cary Lundy also conducted six fundamental camps and talked with two little league teams about college education.

• Women’s Volleyball donated the gate proceeds from one of its matches to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Founda-tion, participated in the KC Aids Walk in the spring, and vol-unteered its time to the Friends of the Parkville Animal Shel-ter. Additionally, men’s and women’s soccer gate proceeds from an October match with William Jewell were donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, as well.

• In April the Spirit Squad each collected items for the Kansas City Rescue Mission. Items varied from canned food, toilet paper, and bath/shower supplies.

• Several Park University student-athletes and staff members donated time throughout the year to Special Olympics of both Kansas and Missouri.

park UniverSity pirate ClUBThe Pirate Club promotes the rich tradition of Park Uni-versity and its athletics by supporting, encouraging, and developing the student-athlete. The primary purpose of the Pirate Club is to cultivate financial support and interest in Park University Athletics. The organization also strives to continue the University’s tradition by assisting student-athletes in achieving academic and athletic success. The Pirate Club is overseen by a 21-member board, led by Park University Board of Trustee member Jinny McCoy.

As a result of the board members’ efforts, Athletic Director Claude English believes that the Pirate Club will help Park University student-athletes excel. “In my 17 years at Park, I have always felt that there was a large void without the presence of a booster organization,” English said. “Now that it is established, I am confident that Pirate Club will support the athletic department in reaching our goal of providing one of the top intercolle-giate athletic experiences in the country for our student-athletes.”

To meet the growing demands of competition at a higher level, the Athletic Department will receive private contri-butions to augment its operational funds. The club will serve to increase necessary revenue to help support the athletic budget in areas of recruitment, program enhance-ment, and scholarships. All contributions are tax deduct-ible.
