2009 ~ 2010 YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Friends and Patrons, Library services are essential. In a tough economy, they become a life link for so many in our com-munity. We have managed significant growth in the usage of our services and the borrowing of our materi-als for several years. But in the last two years, activity levels have surged. In the last five years, circulation, the borrowing of our materials, has increased by 65% compared to a state-wide average increase of 4%, and visits to the Library increased by 117% compared to a state-wide average increase of 8%. The commu-nity is using OWL more than ever and we are responding to that need. As a team, we committed to addressing this growing need by more innovation, improved flexibility, sus-tained adaptability, and dramatic improvements in our efficiency. Our highly successful Book-a- Librar-ian service provided more than 110 one-on-one computer instruction to patrons so that everyone in our community understands and can participate in technology. The “OWL Box”, essentially a vending machine filled with books and films, is the first of its kind in Connecticut. Its installation in September 2010 in Ban-tam at the Big Value will provide needed outreach to Bantam families, working adults and seniors. Attendance at our programs increased more than 24% last year. These programs, which are utilized by pa-trons of all ages, include our monthly author talks, weekly story hours, teen summer reading clubs, after-school science and literary programs, musical and theatrical events. Additionally, we continue to have dramatic growth in readership of our weekly blog, now averaging about 335 readers a day, and use of our website. Our recently launched E-Lounge online book discussion group provides working adults and busy families the opportunity to participate in discussions of literature on their own time. The OWL is efficient, effective and financially prudent. We operate with the rigor, flexibility and cost structure of a small business. We do not have any deferred benefit obligations. All of our capital projects have been completed on-time and under-budget. Many of our capital projects have resulted in direct op-erational savings by reducing energy usage, and none have increased our operational expenses. We reduced our electricity usage by 25% and our oil usage by 40% in the last five years. In this past year alone, we re-duced our oil usage by 14%. As usage increased, our proven adaptability allowed us to increase our work efficiency placing us in the top 15% of all Connecticut libraries and 42% higher than the statewide average. It is through our partnerships and teamwork that we are able to accomplish these goals. NEW PROGRAMS & SERVICES

• Book-a-Librarian: Book-a-Librarian ensures that eve-ryone in our community is computer literate with one-on-one instruction. This year, we provided 120 sessions.

• OWL Box: The OWL Box is an outreach lending ma-chine, essentially a vending machine, filled with books, audio books, and DVDs. Planned installation date of Sep-tember 2010.

• E-Lounge, Online Book Group: The creation of an online book discussion provided working adults and busy families the opportunity to participate in the discussion of literature on their own time.

• Podcasts: We initiated the recording of all of our au-thor talks as podcasts. The podcasts are available for download to your computer, MP3 player or ipod di-rectly from the Library’s website.

• Storytime and Travel Kits: Our “to go” kits provide a complete literary experience in one, convenient pack-age. Each kit contains several books, music, and a craft idea relating to its topic.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

• In the last five years, we have reduced our oil usage by 40% and our electrical usage by 25%. This past year alone, we reduced our oil usage by 14%.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

• Circulation per employee is the standard measure of li-brary efficiency. Again this year OWL’s performance was in the top 15% of all Connecticut libraries and 42% higher than the statewide average.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

• More than 580 families and businesses supported our An-nual Fund Drive.

• More than 500 families, businesses, and volunteers sup-ported Festival of Trees.
