York College Overview York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Stu-dents may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Stu-dents can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

The Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center The York College campus officially grew on April 29, 2006, as the College unveiled the Grumbacher Sport & FitnessCenter to the public. This 160,000 square-foot complex is the centerpiece for student life on the College’s West Campus.Bordered by McKay Hall and Grantley Hall, and a quadrangle of new dormitories, the Center features the Charles WolfGymnasium, a 1,712-seat arena hosting varsity competition in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.Other features include an eight-lanecompetitive pool with instructional areasand 1- and 3-meter diving boards, athree-court field house, spacious lockerroom facilities, and a state-of-the-art fit-ness area that spreads out over 7,600square feet.

Two new Sport Turf fields sit directlysouth of the Grumbacher Center. Gra-ham Field is home to the men’s andwomen’s soccer and track & field teamswhile Kinsley Field is the home of thefield hockey, men’s lacrosse, andwomen’s lacrosse teams.

Strong veterans + a talented group of incoming players = a highlysuccessful 2009 season. That is a formula that the York College vol-leyball squad hopes will work for the upcoming season.

Spartan head coach Sue DuMars begins her 14th season at thehelm of the program looking to build on a 19-win season in 2008.DuMars welcomes back a strong core of returning players, many ofwhom earned extensive experience last season.

DuMars has three seniors on this year’s squad as outside hitterJaclyn Davis, libero Amanda Clemens, and setter Amanda Rouillard give the Spartans steady leadership. Juniors Alishia Waltermyer, Sarah Jackson, Jana Arentz, and Alysse Beshoreprovide DuMars with a deep class while the sophomore group ofHeather Bucher, Heather Toth, Cortni Rentzel, and Julie Coombsall got significant time as freshmen, giving them valuable experiencein preparation for 2009.

The Spartan recruiting class includes middle hitter Melissa Patterson, outside hitter Ashley Rineman, and middle hitterMeaghan Jackson. DuMars is very high on the class that she hopescan get the Spartans over the top and earn their first conference titlesince 1997.

“I am very excited about the composition of this team,” says DuMars. “I believe practices will be highly competitive as the playerswill push each other for floor time. We will have as much depth andsize as we have had here during my tenure at York. I think our talentlevel is very strong and should be as good as we have ever had.”

The Spartans will also have a great deal of versatility with theirlineup this year. A number of players can play multiple positions giving DuMars the ability to mix and match lineups based on how theSpartans are playing and what they need.

DuMars will turn to Waltermyer to lead the Spartan attack in themiddle. Waltermyer is the Spartans’ returning All-CAC player andshe should again be one of the top players in the conference and theleague. Waltermyer is a very strong offensive threat who finishedthird in the CAC in attack percentage. Waltermyer hit .320 with 2.33kills and 0.85 blocks per set. Waltermyer paced the Spartans as sheaveraged 2.96 points per set

“Alishia is one of the top players in our league.” says DuMars.“She had a fantastic sophomore year and she continues to get betterwith her strong work ethic. Alishia has a strong desire to be a greatplayer, and she expects to play great every match.”

Waltermyer will be joined in the middle by Beshore, and Patter-son. Beshore had a good first year in the Green and White as sheplayed in 33 matches, starting 32 of those contests. She hit .208 andaveraged 1.3 kills and 1.75 points per set. Patterson is an experiencedmiddle hitter from South River High School. She has extensive clubexperience and brings a solid 6’1” frame to the Spartan program.

“I am optimistic about the ability and depth we have in the mid-dle,” states DuMars. “We should be strong and deep in the middlethis year.”

DuMars will also have a wealth of depth on the outside as Yorkfeatures a number of experienced hitters. Bucher moves to the outsideafter spending most of last season setting for the Green and White. She played in all 34 matches last year as she hit .145 with 1.68 kills,3.06 assists, and 1.77digs per set. Bucher finished last year averaging2.20 points per set. She will be one of the Spartans’ captains this yearas her determination and work ethic help make her a core member of

the program. “Heather has the potential to be one of the most

explosive players in the CAC,” states DuMars. “She isvery athletic and strong while her understanding of thegame is also good. She has the potential to be one ofthe top players in our league as a sophomore.”

Joining Bucher on the outside are Davis, Toth,Coombs, Rineman, and Meaghan Jackson.

Davis returns to the Spartan lineup after sufferinga season ending injury early in 2008. Davis played in16 matches as she had a .147 attack percentage whileshe averaged 1.47 kills and 1.76 digs per set. Davisfinished the year averaging 2.30 points per set. Tothmissed all of last year due to injury and she will moveto the outside after spending her freshman year as amiddle hitter. Toth played in all 36 matches in 2007 as she hit .162 with 1.39 kills per set. Toth also con-tributed 0.58 blocks per set. Coombs had a very solidfreshman year in which she hit .146 in 28 matches. She averaged 1.47 kills per set during her freshmancampaign.

“Our returning outside hitters are strong and focused,” says DuMars. “I am happy how they playedin the spring, and I have some high expectations fortheir play in the fall. I think we are in good shape interms of talent and depth.”

Rineman enters the Spartan program as a fresh-man that will have the ability to contribute immedi-ately. Rineman comes to York from Delone Catholicand brings extensive club experience to the program. She is a very dynamic and exciting player that is agreat all-around player. Jackson enters the Spartanprogram as a player that was a middle hitter at GoshenCentral High School but she will move to the outside

for the Spartans. She is a player that is very focusedand driven and will compete for time in the Spartanrotation.

The Spartans should also be very strong defen-sively as Clemens returns to the lineup and will bepushed by Rentzel for the starting libero position.Joining Clemens and Rentzel are Arentz and SarahJackson.

Clemens finished last year ranked second in theCAC in digs per set at 5.39. She is a vocal leader onthe floor that is also highly competitive. Rentzelmoves to libero after spending most of last year as oneof the Spartan setters. Rentzel played in all 34 matcheslast year as she averaged 5.31 assists and 2.14 digs perset. The two will compete for the starting job but bothshould get significant time during the course of theseason. Jackson, a Spartan captain in 2009, is a veryintelligent player that should see most of her time as aback row player. She is a good athlete that has a greatunderstanding of the game. Arentz saw action in 16matches last year as she will compete for time in theback row.

“We are in very capable hands defensively,” com-ments the 14-year Spartan mentor. “We have experi-ence and talent which should provide for outstandingdefense and passing. Amanda was very strong lastyear, and Cortni is a very athletic player that covers agood deal of ground.”

DuMars will turn the setting duties over to Rouil-lard. Rouillard provides the Spartans with a dedicatedworker with experience. She has worked very hard inthe offseason to put herself in position to compete forthe starting job. Rouillard played in 18 matches lastseason, averaging 4.18 assists per set.

“I like our depth at setter,” states DuMars.“Amanda brings experience and a desire to shoulderthe load while we also have Cortni and Heather thatcould move back to setter if we needed to make amove like that. Amanda has worked very hard headinginto her senior year and is primed to have a great finalseason.”

DuMars is excited about the potential of her 2009squad.

“I am not sure what our record will be at the endof the season but I fully expect to be in contention fora CAC title. We are still a young team, but I feel verycomfortable with our talent and our leadership. Wehave the potential to have an outstanding season, butwe need to work very hard every day from the start ofpreseason practice through our final game of the year.I expect us to improve as a team each and every day. Ifwe can do that, we will achieve the goals we have setfor the season.”

YORK, Pa. - Salisbury’s senior outside hitter Stacey Krebs was named the Player-of-the-Year for the second-straight year and wasamong five members of the CAC Champion Sea Gulls to earn a berth on the 2008 All-CAC Volleyball Team.

Krebs became the fourth multiple-year CAC Volleyball Player of the Year, joining Gallaudet’s three-time winner Ronda Jo Miller (1996, 1997, and 1999), York’s Kerry Casperson (2002 and 2003) and Gallaudet’s Tamijo Foronda (2004 and 2006) in that elite group.

Krebs, a three-time first-team All-CAC selection, led Salisbury to a 35-1 overall record this season, including a school-record 35-straight wins, and its second-straight CAC championship. The title guaranteed the Gulls their fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in team history. Ewing was alsothe 2006 CAC Rookie-of-the-Year. Joining Ewing on the 2008 All-CAC team were senior Rebecca Tursell and sophomore Claire Kodan.
