Sheikh Moola is a Hafiz and studied Tafsir Hadith, Aqidah and Fiqh. His exclusive visit to our College is indeed an honour for us and the community. We would encourage all staff members, parents, families and friends to witness one of the most captivating and inspiring lectures of all times. Sheikh Moola travelled extensively throughout the world for the purpose of Daawah and teaching.

The venue will be at Al-Taqwa’s Masjid and Multipurpose Hall, 201 Sayers Road, Truganina. Follow our website www.al-taqwa.vic.edu.au for more information or contact Sheikh Warsama or Brother Sameh at our College.

Dear Parents, Students & FriendsA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M

C A R P A R K The Administration carpark is closed throughout the day to allow our senior students more space during recess and lunch. Guests are still able to access the administration building during the day by parking in front of the mosque and walking through the mosque gates. The 229 carpark entry from Devitt Place will also be closed until roadworks are complete early in Term 3.

S T U D E N T I D C A R D SAll students should have their own ID cards now, please ensure that your child keeps their ID card in their school bag at all times. if your child has lost their ID card they must go to the Administration Office to organise a replacement - a $5 fee will apply.

S P E E D I N GOver the course of the year, we have found many parents speeding in the car parks. As you can imagine this is extremely dangerous especially when smaller children pop out between cars. Please follow the actions of our staff on duty and keep in line with the speed on the school grounds at all times.

L A T E A R R I V A L S A N D E A R L Y D I S M I S S A L S We are still experiencing many students arriving late each day. School commences at 8.50am and all students are expected to arrive ontime. If you are finding heavy traffic in the mornings, try the new carpark and if you can leave 10 minutes earlier each day, this will ensure an early arrival.

If your child is required to be collected early due to an appointment, please advise the Administration Office so they can have your child waiting for you in the foyer. Students who fall ill during the day will be contacted by the Nursing staff for collection from the First Aid Department.

S T U D E N T A P P O I N T M E N T STo avoid disruption to your child’s learning it is requested that medical or other appointments for your children are made outside of school hours.

S T U D E N T L U N C H E S We are being inundated with parents arriving at the front office thorughout the entire day with their child’s lunch. Please ensure that your child has a healthy packed lunch in their school bag before they leave home in the morning. This creates a lot of wasted time for our staff.

V I S I T O R SAny parent, guardian or visitor must report to the Administration Office and sign in prior to entering the College grounds. This is necessary especially in the event of an emergency and also for the safety of all our staff and students.

S P A R E C L O T H I N GWe have many younger students presenting to the front office due to bathroom accidents. For parents with children in Foundation and Year 1, can you please provide an extra pair of pants, underwear and socks in their school bags.

Good nutrition is key to good health. Healthy snacks and lunches are important for active students, hence, it is important to offer and introduce your child to healthy food choices.

Eating healthy food helps children concentrate and learn better. Healthy eating changes are not always easy to make, as such, here are some suggestions to help you achieve this goal.

Encourage your child to help choose and prepare their own lunch (they might like to make a list of the foods they enjoy).

Praise your child when they choose healthy food for their lunch box.

There is limited time during recess and lunch for children to eat and often your child may prefer to play with friends instead of eating. It is encouraged that you have a discussion with your child at home about getting a chance to eat enough before playing with their friends.

Food suggestions for lunch boxesThere are a lot of food choices available for lunch boxes however it can sometimes be difficult to decide which foods are healthy or appropriate for school. Foods should be simple and easy to prepare, ready to eat and appetising even after several hours in the lunch box.

Suggestions include Fresh fruits are encouraged. Dried

fruits bars are best left out or have occasionally. Dried fruits bars are very high in sugar, low in fibre and stick to children’s teeth causing tooth decay.

Vegetables such as cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and carrot sticks are a great alternative.

Meat or protein food liked cooked chicken.

Dairy food such as cheese sticks/slices, milk or yogurt. (Fruit yogurt should be kept cool in insulated lunch box. Avoid flavored milk as they are high in sugar.

Starchy food such as sliced bread, roll, pita or rice.

Water is the best option. Sweet drinks such as fruit juices, cordials, sport drinks, fizzy drinks are high in sugar and increase the risk of tooth decay.

Al-Taqwa College is an allergy aware school and we have students that are anaphylaxis to eggs and nuts. We strongly discourage students from bringing eggs and nuts or Nutella/Peanut Butter sandwiches in their lunchbox as this can be a hazard to other students who are anaphylaxis to these foods.

On 9 August 2018 our Foundation students celebrated 100 days at school.

It was an extremely enjoyable day that put huge smiles on the faces of our Foundation students and teachers.

Children displayed their fabulous 100 days t-shirts, were involved in 100 day activities and even had fun being filmed by the school drone.

The 100 milestone is a tradition at Al-Taqwa College and one that the teachers, school and community look forward to each year.

Our Grade 2 students completed their two week swimming block in August this year. The session focused on developing swimming skills as well as water safety.

It was wonderful to see our students so independent getting ready at the pool and looking after their belongings.

A huge thank you to all staff involved in the running and planning of the Swimming Program. InshaAllah, the Grade 1 and Foundation Swimming Programs are as equally as successful.

Term 3 is a busy term with many extracurricular activities. This months highlight was Hajj Week where students got the chance to experience the meaning of Hajj and concluded by making doa as students drank Zam Zam water. The Grade 3 & 4 Department would like to take this opportunity to wish parents who are performing Hajj this year – Hajj Mubarak.

The Internal Spelling Competition was held in preparation to choose the best winner to represent the College in the Wyndham Spelling Bee for the 2018 Junior Division. Areed Rayan of Grade 4G made us proud on 23 August when he became the overall winner, beating participants from more than ten schools.

The Professor Science Incursion was a hit with Grade 3 as students explored the magic of Science. Grade 4 students got excited with their excursion trip to Taskworks where they learnt all about forces. This is what some students had to say:

“When I came to assembly I was half prepared. On the previous day I made lots and lots of duaa probably 800 times including while raining. I won all 4 rounds with no mistakes. The following rounds I was not really good at. But I was lucky the others made HUGE mistakes. And that effect made me the winner.”Falih 3D (Grade 3 Spelling Bee winner)

“I felt happy and excited about all the projects we did I had lots of fun the whole time I was always ready to learn a new subject by Ms Asra, my favorite teacher of all!”Rida 3D

“I really enjoyed term 3 this year. I learned a lot of things this term we even had too much fun! I learned to do a procedure writing! In science I learned about space it was so cool and fun. We are all looking forward for more exciting events with our project preparations to be displayed during our Science Fair Week and the upcoming Literacy and Numeracy Week. Just look out for the letter! Grade 4 students are also looking forward for a fantastic time during the school Sleepover in Week 8. As this event is on first come first serve basis, there is limit to the number of participants. So do return your forms early!

What a wonderful term we have had thus far in the Grade 5 and 6 Department, let’s take you through some of the highlights.

On 16 August , Zohra Soz and Aliza Khan, accompanied by teacher Amber Green, represented Al-Taqwa College at the 2018 Primary School Parliamentary Convention Program at Parliament House. Along with 100 students from 50 schools, students debated ‘Should a sugar tax be introduced to improve public health?’ The mock bill was proposed in the House of Representatives where students engaged in a committee of inquiry in a fun and practical way.

Aliza said, “Zohra and I both had our opinions heard on this very difficult topic and I really think it was exciting to voice my opinion, it felt like I was in parliament debating as a member of parliament”. We are extremely proud to share with you the wonderful news from the Upper Primary Debating

teams. Our three debating teams participated in the Hampton Park Regional Debating Day organised by the DAV. The teams competed against Hampton Park Primary School and St Kevin’s Primary School and achieved the title of UNDEFEATED by winning 9/9 debates.

On 23 August, our two champion spellers, Areeb Rayaan (Grade 4) and Huzaifa Imran (Grade 6) competed at the 2018 Wyndham Library Spelling Bee held at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. The students were cheered on by their families as well as Vice Principal, Mohammad Hallak and Head of Upper Primary, Jane Pritchard.

We are proud to announce that Areeb Rayaan was crowned ‘Wyndham’s Spelling Bee Champion’ for the grade 3-4 category. Fellow Al-Taqwa College pupil Huzaifa finished in the top 8 (out of 18 schools) in the Grade 5-6 division.

A sensational achievement for the Al-Taqwa community and in particular our spelling bee champion.

During the Grade 6 Supreme Science excursion students participated in a series of hands-on science activities focused on the topic of electricity.

Students participated in the annual Religion and Arabic week activities including the Aqsa day presentation and Kahoot quiz.

Upcoming events this term include the author visit of Oliver Phommavanh (Grade 6), the ‘Silly Science’, incursion for Grade 5 and the DAV inaugural public speaking competition.

On 30 July, a selected number of grade 6 students had the opportunity to visit their friends from Furlong Park School for Deaf Children. During the visit, students were taken on a tour around the different year levels and observed the learning and teaching that happens in a classroom with all deaf students. They had the opportunity to learn Auslan and used this form of communication with the deaf students. This experience allowed students to develop a sense of empathy towards them as they witnessed the learning difficulties associated with being deaf. We hope to further increase our student’s knowledge and exposure to disabilities by planning more of these excursions.

VCAL Eid Fundraiser Each year our talented VCAL students are involved in Eid Fundraiser projects as part of their Personal Development Skills subject. Students worked extremely hard on designing and creating products from scratch to sell as part of their Eid Fundraiser. All Year 10, 11 and 12 VCAL students showed outstanding imagination and creativity skills in carefully designing these products to cater for all. We are very happy to announce that we raised a total of $1,000. We are extremely proud of these students as they put in an immense amount of effort and dedication towards their Fundraiser Project. Well done to them!!

Community Services The Year 11 VET Community Services class have been working on a project which involved working with two community groups. The students chose to work with Sheikh Warsama Bulhan, Nazia Suliman (Student Services Coordinator) and Maha Saleh (Head of Counselling). The focus of this project was for students to work with these community groups, identify issues in the community and develop an action plan of their priorities.

Group 1 worked with Sheikh Warsama to tackle the issue of racial discrimination. This group planned a session with Year 7 Girls to run a very engaging role play activity to raise awareness of this issue and remind students on the importance of accepting all individuals regardless of their race.

Group 2 worked with Nazia and Maha to raise awareness on disability. This group planned a very informative assembly and discussion with Grade 5 students along with some useful activities in order to raise awareness on disability. Through this project, our Year 11 Senior students built positive relationships with the junior students. This was an extremely beneficial session and we are very proud of the Year 11 VET class.

Well done to these students! A very big thank you to Sheikh Warsama, Nazia and Maha for their support.

Our Year 12 VCAL students have been learning about the topic of Homelessness. They have also been working towards developing a project to take action and make a difference to tackle this issue.

The Year 12 VCAL class attended an excursion to the ‘Salvation Army City Tour’. The day started with the first hour as a workshop that explored the causes, effects and stereotypes of homelessness. This workshop also included short videos and many fun group activities to help the students understand the cause and effect of homelessness.

The group was then taken on a 40 minute guided walking city tour to visit locations where people ‘sleep rough’; real stories and real people were discussed to give students an insight into the issues they face on a nightly basis. This was a very informative and enriching learning experience for our students.

We would like to thank The Salvation Army for this great opportunity! We can’t wait to see the amazing work and completion of our students’ project to tackle this issue. Stay tuned!
