From the President and the Board Chair

What does it mean to be a leader?

After 183 years of setting standards in the field of blindness

education, we believe it means much more than simply

determining what works and sticking to it. Rather, it’s

knowing when to ask ourselves, “How could we do

things differently? How could we do even better?”

Embracing change means having the courage to

consider problems in a different light. It’s about self-

reflection and new ideas. Our formula for success is built

on two different, but equally important foundations. The

first, our legacy of best practices and pioneering ways,

has made Perkins a global leader in blindness education

and advocacy. The second, our willingness to embrace

change, has turned this organization into an energizing

environment where educators, students, families and

the community grow together.

That self-reflection has led to a recent change that will

help us better communicate our mission to the world.

We’ve simplified our name to Perkins, allowing us to more

accurately describe all that our growing organization has

become in the last two centuries. Today, we’re a global

leader in the field of blindness education and advocacy

with partners in 67 countries; a hotbed for cutting-edge

technology and innovative products; a center for face-to-

face and online training for educator excellence; and, at the

heart of it all, a thriving campus school where students gain

the skills and confidence necessary for a future of success.

This change is also an opportunity for us to embrace and

promote our commitment to literacy through braille.

Our new logo – the name Perkins in print and braille –

underscores what we believe is one of the best paths to

literacy, education and employment for those who are

blind or visually impaired. As you can see on the facing

page, our new name and logo are the most recent result

of introspection that spans Perkins’ history.

Along these lines, we’ve initiated a number of projects

that support our Strategic Plan and mission. Perkins, in

collaboration with the Helen Keller National Center for

Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults, has proudly launched iCan-

Connect, the campaign charged with spreading the word

about the Federal Communication Commission’s National

Deaf-Blind Equipment Distribution Program, a project that

aims to help connect 1 million people across the country

who have combined hearing and vision loss with accessible

communications technology.

And that’s just the start. We’ve unveiled the SMART

Brailler®, the latest innovation from Perkins Products,

which offers students, teachers and parents an interac-

tive way to learn and share braille as never before. We’ve

also partnered with Texas School for the Blind and Visu-

ally Impaired to launch Paths to Literacy, one of our latest

eLearning projects that combines our resources and best

practices to advance literacy. And as always, at the core of

our work is our thriving campus. This year we are honored

to be entrusted with more than 200 remarkable, industri-

ous students who will someday make the world a better

place with their contributions.

These initiatives and so much more are part of our journey

– the ongoing quest to change more lives for the better.

Thank you for your support and partnership as we continue

to challenge ourselves and lead this organization and

the people whose lives depend on it toward an even

better future.

Warmly,

1

Gaurav’s parents had given up all hope of an education for their beloved

son. The last school to which they had appealed sent their child home with

a cruel note pinned to his shirt: “Your child is not only blind, he’s mad.”

For Gaurav, whose eyes had been removed due to cancer at age 2, a

second chance at life came when his family discovered SOBTI, a Perkins

partner in Mumbai that accepts children who are blind and have

multiple disabilities.

At SOBTI – the Hindi word for companion – a small collaboration of

four teachers and seven mothers leads students through daily physical

exercises, shopping trips and vocational training. The two-room flat that

houses the organization feels more like a family home than a school. Six

years since finding SOBTI, Gaurav is reading and writing braille. He visits

the market on his own. He dreams of one day going to college and

becoming a doctor.

“When my son isn’t at SOBTI, he misses the people,” said Santosh Singh,

Gaurav’s mother. “I miss them too. At SOBTI, I don’t feel alone.”

From India to Latin America and beyond, Perkins is working to reach

children left behind by a world that fails to see their untapped potential.

Focused on a better future where every human being is valued for their

inherent worth, we gain strength from our partners in 67 countries around

the globe and work relentlessly toward our shared goals. Together, we

advocate for equal rights and education for all, train teachers, share

resources, and refuse to accept that 4.5 million of the world’s children

don’t go to school simply because they are blind.

• Perkins International was awarded one of its largest-ever

grants to assist China’s Ministry of Education in implementing

new regulations for the education of nearly 9 million school-age

children with disabilities, only 6 percent of whom currently

attend school. Thanks to this generous grant from Ikea and

Save the Children, Perkins International will collaborate with

Save the Children to pilot inclusive education models in eight

counties in the Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, developing new

university courses and conducting a national campaign to

raise awareness, empower parents and reduce discrimination

against children with disabilities.

• Perkins hosted a total of 13 educators from Bangladesh,

China, Kenya, Serbia, Tanzania, India, South Africa,

Bulgaria, Guatemala, Argentina, Ghana and Chile on its

Watertown, Mass., campus for the Educational Leadership

Program, giving them first-hand experience working with

students who are blind, deafblind and visually impaired.

• Perkins International forged new partnerships and expanded

initiatives with local organizations in Chile, China, East Africa,

Israel and Poland in its ongoing effort to bring education

and equality to all individuals, regardless of ability, around

the globe.

• A Senior Management Institute in South Africa, supported in

part by Perkins International, trained 20 leaders in blindness

agencies with new skills that will encourage the growth and

development of their respective organizations.

• Dr. W. Aubrey Webson, director of Perkins International,

served as a keynote speaker at the 6th International Council

Enslavement and violence defined Keer’s childhood in Darfur, the place

he was taken after being kidnapped from his home in Sudan. Freedom

came only at the irretrievable cost of his eyesight when his master

punished him by stringing him up over a fire and rubbing chili peppers

in his eyes. A charitable organization brought Keer to the U.S., where

he spent some time in surgery and rehabilitation before entrusting his

education and future to Perkins. Two years later, Keer is flourishing on

campus at Perkins School for the Blind, where he is learning braille,

English, history, music, science and more.

“He earned an A in math. That’s the best you can get,” muses Lynne

Eisenberg, Keer’s social worker at Perkins. “And that’s someone who’s

never been in school before.”

Keer absorbs the praise quietly. “I want to learn,” he says simply. “For a

long time, I never saw school. So things I don’t know, I need to learn.”

From academics and expanded core curriculum, to preparing for

college, a job and a life of independence, Perkins School for the Blind in

Watertown, Mass., teaches each student that they are a special, unique

person – not just an individual with a disability. We touch the lives of

the youngest children through our early intervention and Infant/Toddler

Program, where we support their first critical years of growth and

development through strategies shared with families on campus and

at home. Our Educational Partnerships and Outreach Services programs

help public school children to compete with their peers, succeed in and

outside the classroom and gain valuable vocational experiences. Our own

specialized education programs offer youths through age 22 rigorous

academic and independent living challenges to prepare them for a life

of success at home, at work and in higher education. Together, our

educators, therapists and other staff work tirelessly to provide every

child with the skills, self-advocacy and confidence they need to create

a plan for their future as an integral part of the community.

When her fingers pressed the keys, Iree’s face lit up. “I-R-E-E,” the automated

voice confirmed. The girl clapped her hands and beamed. “Ooh, did you

hear that?” Iree, who is blind, had brailled her name correctly – and she

knew it instantly, thanks to the Perkins SMART Brailler.® Unveiled in 2012,

this innovative tool will change the way people learn braille, thanks to

an interactive experience created by audio feedback and a visual screen.

This unique combination enables students of braille to understand,

track and celebrate their progress independently. It also invites teachers,

parents and friends to participate in the student’s learning, providing a

shared learning experience for everyone. Perkins Products is proud to

introduce the new SMART Brailler, the latest product of Perkins’

ongoing commitment to literacy through braille.

“The overall goal of every Perkins Products innovation is to expand

literacy through braille – and thereby expand potential success for

people who are blind – throughout the world,” said David Morgan,

vice president and general manager of Perkins Products. “The SMART

Brailler is the tool to do this.”

Perkins firmly believes braille remains the best means for people who

are blind or visually impaired to become educated, gain employment

and live as an independent, contributing member of the community. This

philosophy, outlined in our Strategic Plan and brought to life through our

hundreds of initiatives around the globe, is present in everything we do.

From providing braille learning materials and resources to classrooms

and educators in developing countries, to advocating the importance of

braille to global communities and governments, Perkins is determined to

make braille accessible and available to every individual who can benefit.

Together, we are supporting the world’s children with the tools, education

and opportunity they need to lead the next generation to a better future.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO A BETTER, BRIGHTER WORLD

• Through the support of Perkins International, the Braille

Council of Ghana was formally established and is now working

to develop standards for braille to improve the quality and

consistency of braille materials in that area. Perkins International

continues to work toward the creation of country-wide braille

councils, groups that establish a nationally recognized and

accepted standard for the way braille codes are defined for

letters, numbers and rules of grammar. Perkins International

also co-sponsored the first Braille Cup competition in Ghana,

a braille reading and writing competition designed to encourage

the learning of braille by students and emphasize its

importance for literacy and independence.

• Perkins has partnered with the National Library Service for

the Blind and Physically Handicapped and the International

Council on English Braille to coordinate the printing of the

revised “World Braille Usage,” a global reference manual

containing information on braille codes around the world.

This latest edition, updated since its last printing in 1990,

includes braille codes used by North American

indigenous groups.

• The Perkins Library continues to promote braille by circulating

Summary of Programs and Services for the year ending June 30, 2012

As a world-renowned teacher of teachers, Perkins is the place where more people turn every year for our expanding collection of webcasts, webinars and other online educational resources. This growth has led traffic to Perkins.org to increase by more than 500 percent – increasing our annual impact to a total of 639,030 lives.

Net assets for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012 were $280,907,359.

The Annual Report presents Perkins’ revenue used to cover operating and program expenses for FY2012. Perkins saw a decrease in non-operating net assets of ($14,233,631), which includes restricted gifts and legacies, restricted and unrestricted investment income and restricted and unrestricted realized gains and unrealized losses. Most of this decrease was due to net assets released from restrictions for operations, and capital.

19

Last year marked the dawn of a

new chapter in Perkins’ history – the launch of the public phase

of our first comprehensive fundraising campaign. The Touch Our

World Campaign is a multi-year effort that will raise $130 million

to expand our work for children and adults who are blind,

deafblind or visually impaired, including those with

additional disabilities.

The Touch Our World Campaign is about more than raising

money. It’s a chance to introduce Perkins to a wider audience.

For people who know us just by our Watertown campus, it allows

us to showcase the multitude of ways we enhance the lives of

people in 67 countries around the world.

The Touch Our World Campaign is also about raising the

bar. The resources we’ll bring in will allow us to better support

our extraordinary teachers, therapists and staff, upgrade the

technology that empowers our students, broaden the reach

of our community programs and expand our teacher training

initiatives. Internationally, we’ll be able to provide more

educational opportunities to the 4.5 million visually impaired

children in developing countries who aren’t yet in school.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the campaign.

Your generosity is transforming Perkins and the lives of the people

we serve, on campus and around the world.

At Perkins, we know that with the right education

and opportunity, a person who is blind can do almost

anything a sighted person can. But they can’t do it alone.

That’s why we’re so grateful to the 17,552 individuals,

foundations, companies and charitable groups who

contributed to Perkins’ educational and service

programs. Thanks to their extraordinary outpouring of

support, Perkins raised $23,539,910 in fiscal year 2012 to

help children and adults in 67 countries make continued

progress on their journey to independence and

self-sufficiency.

In the pages that follow, we pay tribute to all those who

donated gifts, pledges and pledge payments of $500 or

more. Their generosity will make a lifetime of difference

for people who are blind, deafblind or visually impaired,

including those with additional disabilities. We thank

them for affirming, once again, the world-changing

power of “together.”

IndividualsEvery person has a unique ability to make a difference. Our individual supporters demonstrate that every day. Their abundant generosity supports Perkins’ life-changing work around the world, in the community and on campus. We thank every individual listed below for helping children and adults who are blind build a better, brighter future.

Visionary Society“Indispensible” is the best way to describe members of the Perkins Visionary Society. Their current use gifts of $1,000 or more provide a reliable base of support for everything we do, and help fund the educational, vocational and life-skills programs that expand students’ opportunities. We are grateful every day for their generosity and unwavering support.

Visionary Society was renamed Partners in Possibility in August 2012.

Corporations, Foundations, Organizations and GovernmentAn investment in success – that’s what the foundations, corporations, government agencies and other organizations listed below made this year. Their restricted and unrestricted gifts, support, and on-the-ground collaborative efforts make possible a variety of new programs and daily operations, and help promote increased independence for people who are blind. Along with our implementing partners, they are an essential part of our work.

Perkins Possibilities Gala The 2012 Perkins Possibilities Gala was the perfect combination of good deeds and good fun. More than 600 guests enjoyed an unforgettable evening of entertainment and inspiration, while raising a record $1.6 million for Perkins’ global work. Secondary Program students Michelle and Sam served as masters of ceremony, Boston-based comedian Tony V. conducted the auction, and Felix Cavaliere and the Rascals took the stage to perform timeless pop classics with the help of Perkins student singers. To everyone who made the evening such a marvelous success – thank you.

Gala and Technology ChallengeTechnology empowers people who are blind. Accessible digital devices like smartphones, tablets and computers give Perkins students new ways to learn, connect and explore their world. To everyone who contributed to our Technology Challenge, thank you for helping our students get “plugged into” a world that is increasingly driven by technology.

Perkins In-Kind GiftsHow many ways are there to be generous? More than we can count, if the bountiful array of products and services contributed to Perkins over the past year by companies, individuals and organizations is any indication. These thoughtful in-kind gifts reduce our costs and free up more resources for educational programs. Special thanks to our Gala in-kind donors, whose generosity multiplied the impact of that unforgettable evening.

Thomas H. Perkins Legacy SocietyMembers of the Thomas H. Perkins Legacy Society have a generous spirit that soars beyond the horizon of a single lifetime. They support Perkins by designating the school as the beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan or life insurance policy, or by creating another type of deferred giving arrangement. We thank them for making the future so much brighter for children who are blind, deafblind or visually impaired.

Vocational PlacementYou never forget your first job. Neither will the high school students who participated in our Outreach Services Summer Employment Program. For five weeks, students who are blind or visually impaired got an opportunity to gain real-world job experience with local businesses and non-profit organizations – while mastering new skills and overcoming limitations. Thank you to the following companies for helping our students take this important step on the road to independent adulthood.
