Having been associated with this school for over 25 years, I have seen it ride the twists and turns of life; but the past few years has given us a surprisingly new road on which to travel. The world of the independent schools has changed and small schools now face big questions. Despite the challenges to provide sufficient resources for operations as enrollment has decreased and financial aid increased substantially over the past ten years, our community has been vigorously engaged in creating new ways forward this year.

Volunteer and school leaders embarked on a year of Study, Adjustment and Progress.

• The Board led a re-focusing of the long range Strategic Plan, directing full attention to improving enrollment and the pedagogical experience.

• The Board completed a 3 year study of a collaborative leadership model, including feedback from the Administration, the Faculty and Parents.

• The Board created a new standing committee – the Board Personnel Committee - and a new task group to assist with IT planning.

• Board members and parents led the Windows into Waldorf tours which support admissions and community outreach.

• An increase in Circle of Light donors who made multi-year pledges demonstrated that we have found a new way to raise the monies needed to promise sustainability.

• The Parents Association led reinvigorated efforts to improve communication and parent education, and to strengthen joyful community building and volunteerism.

Achievements by Faculty/Administration reflect a commitment to Communication and Quality.

• A new, interactive website will be launched in the fall of 2014.

• Opportunities for professional development were increased.

• Children’s Garden teachers refined a new Bridge Program to enhance 1st grade readiness.

• Lower School teachers implemented a new Language Arts curriculum.

• Middle School teachers and the Ecoliteracy / Sustainability Coordinator developed new curriculum.

Once again, our graduates were successful in being accepted to the high schools of their choice; this achievement reminds us that it is the inner development of our students that is the most essential measure of our success. At a time when we must strive for excellence while streamlining the way in which we work, the entire school community remains dedicated to helping shape well-rounded young people who will bring capacities to this world it sorely needs. Our graduates leave to journey on a variety of roads, each chosen to suit their unique gifts and interests developed as they built the foundation for life-long learning , service and achievement at WSB.

It is with heartfelt sincerity that I thank each and every one in the school community – teachers, staff, parents, volunteers, donors and friends - for their participation in and support of this worthy endeavor.

Sincerely,

Chaddie Hughes President, Board of Directors 2013-15
