It all starts here

On September 7, 1954 Bishop Gorman High School opened as the only Catholic high school in Southern Nevada with the vision to provide students with an unparalleled college preparatory education in an environment distinguished by Catholic values. Bishop Gorman has been rooted in the fabric of Las Vegas for almost sixty years, never straying from our founders’ initial vision. We continue to welcome students who seek quality, Catholic college preparatory education from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and ethnicities throughout the Las Vegas community. Leaders of today and tomorrow continue to benefit greatly from the spiritual and academic formation that is central to the Bishop Gorman experience.

In 2OO7 Bishop Gorman High School moved to its current Summerlin campus in order to meet the demands of the growing Las Vegas population. Since that time the campus has expanded and currently sits on 56 acres at the base of the beautiful Spring Mountain Range. Our state of the art facilities allow us to provide our students with every opportunity they need to succeed in today’s competitive environment.

Link Crew

“Starting high school can be an overwhelming experience. It made it so much easier that the first two days were focused on us (freshmen), getting used to being on campus and meeting new people. The LINK Leaders (upper class students) were so nice and fun and made high school less intimidating. Now I get to be a LINK Crew Member and do the same thing for this year’s freshman class.”

This provides a unique opportunity for some professional experience in a particular field and insight into possible career paths.

Wellness CounselorBishop Gorman employs a Wellness Counselor whose task it is to provide support to students who need assistance that goes beyond that offered by a guidance counselor. The Wellness Counselor assists students with issues related to stress, balance, grief, family, and other common teenage issues. Additionally, the Wellness Counselor makes referrals to professionals in the community when warranted.

* GAELS PeriodBishop Gorman High School is committed to meeting the needs of all of our students by using a variety of different approaches. One of the methods we have developed to reach this goal is the GAELS (God, Activities, and Enhanced Learning Sessions) Period. The GAELS Period provides students and teachers extra opportunities to meet and extend their experiences beyond what they may have already received during the regular instructional time while still in school. The GAELS Period allows for remediation, intervention, enrichment, study time, makeup work, club and Campus Ministry meetings, as well as other school programs.

LiturgyIn keeping with the commitment to enhance the spiritual life of the Bishop Gorman community, students and faculty worship together during monthly Eucharistic celebrations. Students are welcome to participate in liturgies as lectors, Eucharistic ministers or members of the Worship Choir.

TheologyStudents have Theology courses in their schedule each year. Offerings include: Sacred Scripture, Christology, New Testament, Church History, Morality, Social Justice and World Religions.

Our Lady of Lourdes GrottoThe Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto was dedicated in 2O12 to enhance the spiritual presence on campus. This tranquil environment, complete with contemplative music and candlelight, provides students with a space to pray and reflect in a quiet surrounding.

Faith &Community

“If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

(James 2:15-17)

Page 15: 2013-2014 Viewbook

13

RetreatsStudents are encouraged to participate in our retreat program; Quest (for freshmen and sophomores) and Kairos (for juniors and seniors) provide an opportunity to explore one’s relationship with God, others and self.

ServiceA key aspect of our mission is to create a community where service is valued and celebrated. Students are required to complete 25 hours of community service annually. Many service opportunities are provided for student participation throughout the year. Last year, Bishop Gorman students performed over 33,OOO hours of service to the Las Vegas community.

Our student-governed Matthew 25 board conducts a weekly on-campus collection and reviews applications from those in need requesting monetary assistance. Last year schoolwide collections totaled over $48,OOO which was distributed throughout the Las Vegas community.

In 1996 a group of Bishop Gorman students founded Matthew’s Closet, a free clothing bank for homeless and low-income families in the Las Vegas area. Servicing the homeless directly and personally by distributing free clothing, toiletries and other useful items, the program is funded and staffed entirely by the Bishop Gorman community.

“...because our community is inspired and united by Jesus Christ.”
