MassArt has a long heritage of excellence, as well as an

extremely selective admissions process. We are proud of

our world-class faculty and visiting artists and our state-of-

the-art facilities. Our urban campus, which spans an entire

city block, gives students access to over 1 million square

feet of studio, classroom, living, and exhibition space.

The opportunity to work and create in a diverse community

of innovative, hard-working artists, designers, and educators

fosters a learning environment that encourages multidisci-

plinary practice and dialogue—a central value of the graduate

programs at MassArt. This belief, shared across programs,

creates a supportive space in which students can fully develop

their vision.

In addition to coursework within their studio concentrations,

all graduate students take critical theory coursework with

both a historical and a contemporary focus. These courses

use the art and design communities of Boston and beyond

as the venues for classroom exploration.

The Post-Baccalaureate Dynamic Media Institute (DMI)

program gives students an opportunity to focus on the role,

and possible new uses of dynamic media in communication

design. This program offers professionals from outside the

design field a rigorous educational experience that will prepare

them for new opportunities including application to graduate

schools or study in our Dynamic Media Institute’s MFA program.

The Post-Baccalaureate Media Arts (Photography)

program is an intensive course of study for those seeking an

advanced level of discourse, both technical and theoretical,

about the medium of photography. The program provides an

individualized curriculum for students who wish to develop

their portfolios and skills to prepare for future graduate

school or as an end in itself.

The Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) is intended

for students who have strong undergraduate backgrounds

in studio art and who seek initial licensure as art teachers.

TPP coursework focuses on pedagogical theory as well

as pre-practicum and practicum (fieldwork) experience.

While preparation for initial licensure mandates 150 hours

of student- teaching practicum, MassArt students benefit

from 300+ hours in the classroom.

*Post baccalaureate programs require one year (24 credits) of study and may be adaptable depending on the needs of the individual student.

GRADUATE / MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE

The Master of Architecture program at MassArt combines professional require- ments with hands-on design and build experience in community-based teaching and working spaces.

The program, accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting

Board, provides students with rigorous and accessible professional

preparation for a variety of architecture related careers through

two tracks: Track I, for students with an undergraduate degree not

in architecture (102 credits in 3 years), and Track II, for those with

a B Arch degree (60 credits in 2 years). In their second summer,

Track I students join incoming Track II students to collaborate on

a community-based design then build studio.

Grounded in energy-conscious building and site design, the

coursework promotes conceptual exploration with practical

application in building systems, construction technology, ethical

practice, and cultural traditions in architecture.

Students develop a personal language of form and a responsible

design ethic through the study of current, visionary, historic, and

vernacular architectures, and experimentation with the intrinsic

properties and geometries of materials and building systems.

Critiques by faculty, guests, and visiting design/construction

professionals help students to further refine designs and vision.

Internship Development Program (IDP) counseling is offered

to students preparing for national professional registration.

The MFA: 2D Fine Arts program at MassArt fosters independent creative making and thinking.

The two-year (60 credit) MFA: 2D Fine Arts program focuses

on painting and printmaking as specific disciplines but also

encourages the student’s diverse practice. The program

promotes critical responsiveness and independence and

provides an intense working environment within which each

student can pursue their own direction.

The foundation of the program is the critique. In addition

to individual critiques, each student will present their work for

discussion with peers and faculty on a weekly basis. The goal

is to foster a critical dialogue at various stages of the student’s

creative process.

The MFA: 3D Fine Arts (Fibers, General, Metals) program at MassArt allows students to work in ceramics, fibers, glass, jewelry and metalsmithing, sculpture, or across combined mediums.

The two-year (60 credit) MFA: 3D Fine Arts (Fibers, General,

Metals) program enables students to explore and embrace

their own philosophy and style; they may work with traditional

materials and processes or create technology-driven objects

using kinetic, interactive, video, or electronic elements. The

program fosters rigorous experimentation, investigation and

research of personal iconography and ideas, cross-disciplinary

work, and collaboration.

Students engage in fine arts, art history, and critical theory

courses and meet with curators and artists at galleries and

museums. They also choose a studio mentor from the college-

wide faculty to work closely with them throughout their

residency in the program. A thesis exhibition in the College’s

main gallery and an oral presentation mark the culmination

of each student’s studies.

In addition to individual studio space, students have access to

fully equipped fabrication, installation, and exhibition facilities.

The Master of Arts: Teaching/Art Education program at MassArt provides artists with the skills and training to foster a thriving art community where students are inspired to keep studio practices at the core of the educational experience.

The Master of Arts: Teaching/Art Education program (36 credits)

prepares students to earn an Initial Teacher License in Massa-

chusetts, while also providing the Master’s level coursework

requirements for a Professional Teaching License. This is the

optimal program for students who possess a strong background

in studio work and want to teach in PK-12 public or private

schools, museums, social service, or community agencies.

In addition to their coursework, students visit schools, teach

in Saturday Studios, and student-teach during a semester-long

practicum. While classic preparation for the Initial License

mandates a minimum of 150 hours of student teaching, MassArt

expects 300+ of classroom involvement.

The Initial Teacher License is granted by the State of Massa-

chusetts for a single level—either Pre-Kindergarten through

Grade 8 or Grade 5 through Grade 12. Students usually complete

the 36-credit MAT/AE program in 4 semesters, 9 credits per

semester (fall, spring, summer, and a second fall).

The MFA: Design [The Dynamic Media Institute (DMI)] program at MassArt explores the role and possibilities of dynamic media in communication design.

The 60-credit DMI MFA enables students to pursue their

thesis through a rigorous practice of research, prototyping,

and writing. With the support of peers, faculty, advisors, and

critics, their practice will culminate in a rich body of original

work and a comprehensive written thesis document.

Thesis topics range from interface design, interactive

environments, learning applications, and data visualization

to participatory narrative, sound and video installation,

smart objects, and much more. Students matriculate with

a new body of work, skills, and experience, equipped to

become a leading educator, practitioner, or entrepreneur.

The program is offered in three tracks: a two-year track in

four semesters, a three-year track in five semesters, or a three-

year track in six semesters. The only difference between the

tracks is the distribution of elective credits. DMI also offers a

one-year fellowship non-matriculating track to which students

may be accepted, based on their specific project proposal.

Admission to the DMI program is highly selective, enrolling

just eight to ten students each year.

For a complete list of DMI requirements, courses, and faculty,

The MFA (Low Residency): Fine Arts (Boston) program at MassArt allows mid- career artists and educators to complete a 60-credit MFA over three consecutive summers—creating a unique opportunity for study in the midst of a career.

The three-year (60 credit) MFA (Low Residency): Fine Arts

(Boston) is an ideal choice for working artists or educators who

bring a strong sense of self-direction to their learning journey.

Students develop an independent body of work which could

involve a combination of media, technologies, and techniques.

Six-week summer residencies in Boston immerse students in

an intense studio environment and foster creative collabora-

tions. During these residencies, students live on campus in the

Artists Residence or in off-campus housing of their choosing.

Between residencies, students will work under the guidance

of a regionally based artist/mentor who conducts monthly

studio visits and critiques. Online art history and critical studies

courses forge greater understanding of contemporary art

history and issues in contemporary studio practice. At the

conclusion of the program, students present in their cohort’s

thesis exhibitions and participate in final reviews on campus.
