Central Washington University is a place where students get to do what they’re learning. Biology students and professors tag bull trout on Snoqualmie Pass. Music students perform on Benaroya Hall’s world-class stage. Faculty and students in geology site earthquake detection systems on dams, mountaintops, and coastlines.

The benefit to students is an educational experience made richer, more exciting, and more relevant by applying classroom knowledge to real situations. The benefit to employers is well educated and experienced graduates who are prepared for work on day-one because they’ve already moved beyond books to apply their knowledge in the field.

Small classes taught exclusively by professors allow students to work closely with faculty, to ask questions, and to engage in research as undergraduates. Faculty know their students’ names. Learning isn’t confined to the classroom. It’s part of the way we live.

“ I am very happy with what I got out of Central’s Environmental Studies program—it has opened my mind and many doors to environmental issues and concerns, where I know I will be able to make a difference.”

Recreational Wonderland. Central is located in the heart of Washington State in the beautiful and historic City of Ellensburg. The 90-minute drive east of Seattle takes a beautiful and peaceful route over the Cascade Mountains to Kittitas County. With four distinct seasons, the area is perfect for those who love the outdoors. No matter where you live in Ellensburg, you’re just minutes away from snowboarding and skiing, hiking, floating the river, fly fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, camping, and many other outdoor activities.

Page 5: Cwu viewbook 2014

Students living on campus typically have a higher GPA than students living off campus.

SURC. Central’s Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) is more than 220,000 square feet. It’s the largest building on campus and one of the first facilities of its kind to combine both recreation and student life programs. The SURC is home to a 50-foot rock wall, an indoor jogging track, a four-court gymnasium, strength training and cardiovascular areas, group exercise rooms, outdoor equipment rentals, and locker rooms with saunas.

You’ll also find a market-style dining area with flexible meal programs and a large variety of food choices, the Wildcat Shop, a full-service U.S. Bank, ATM machines, a movie theatre, student government, and the student radio station, 88.1 KCWU, the ‘Burg. Many buildings on Central’s campus, including the SURC, are completely wireless, making your connection to the Internet easy no matter where you are. cwu.edu/surc

Your Voice Matters. The Associated Students of Central Washington University’s Board of Directors (ASCWU BOD) make it possible for students to be heard. Nearly every university governance committee welcomes student members to assure student interests are met. cwu.edu/ascwu

Taking volunteer service to a new level, the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) engages students, faculty, and staff in the community. Whether it’s a flash mob to support the local United Way campaign or “Painting the town pink” to raise breast cancer awareness, the CLCE harnesses the energy and enthusiasm of students to make a difference and become active, concerned citizens. It also coordinates purposeful and productive service experiences that benefit the local and global communities. www.takeactioncwu.com
