Recap The Checkers and Chiquita partnered on a joint volunteer program, which

served dozens of non-profit organizations and schools in the Charlotte community through the end of the summer. Together they were able to donate

over 1,000 hours of community service.

The program began on June 1, 2013 and ran through the end of August, helping all of the following organizations:

555 charity

In late 2012 Five Local Charities joined forces to build new homes for our Service Disabled Veterans in Denver, NC. This collaborative effort between Hearts & Hammers, Military Family Lifestyle Charitable Foundation, Purple Heart Homes, Charlotte Bridge

Homes, The Patriot Charities, local businesses and hundreds of volunteers assisted our American Veterans and their families with housing.

Alexander Youth Network

Alexander Youth Network provides quality professional treatment to children with serious emotional and behavioral problems. The Charlotte Checkers were able to bring

the game of hockey to children throughout the summer!

Carolina raptor center

Carolina Raptor Center is dedicated to environmental stewardship and the conservation of birds of prey, through education, research, and the rehabilitation of

injured and orphan raptors.

goodwill

Changing lives through the power of work, the Charlotte Checkers teamed up with Goodwill to help students in their program produce quality resumes and interview

skills.

Habitat for humanity

Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion.

Humane society

The Humane Society of Charlotte is working with you to create a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. As a “space available shelter,” our policy is

that all animals at the Humane Society of Charlotte are offered the opportunity of a safe and loving home. For every animal adopted, another animal comes in.

Loaves and fishes

Loaves & Fishes is a non-profit emergency food pantry program that provides a week's worth of nutritious groceries free of charge to individuals and families experiencing a

crisis. Loaves & Fishes serves Mecklenburg County through a network of 19 food pantries.

Men’s shelter of charlotte

The Men's Shelter is dedicated to providing safe emergency shelter while working to end homelessness for each man.

Special olympics

Camp SOAR is an exciting week that encourages current Special Olympics athletes to try new sports and recruit new athletes to participate in Special Olympics.

Mecklenburg county

To empower the citizenry of Mecklenburg County to take greater responsibility for enhancing their environment, thereby resulting in a community of pride and choice for

people to live, work and recreate.

Second harvest food bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food.

Trips for kids

Trips for Kids Charlotte is a nonprofit that provides mountain bike rides - as well as the opportunity to Earn-A-Bike - for children ages 10 to 15 from Charlotte's fragile

neighborhoods.

The organization uses mountain biking and related activities to teach youngsters lessons in personal responsibility, self-empowerment, achievement, environmental

awareness, physical fitness and community service.

Xcel to fitness

Xcel 2 Fitness uses the fundamentals of fitness to develop the character boys need to chase their dreams.

YMCA

The Charlotte Checkers and the Harris YMCA teamed up this summer to bring hockey to the All-Sport Summer camp. Once a week for 14 week, checkers staff member brought

equipment and hockey knowledge to the children in the summer camp.

Other organizations

The mission of Charlotte Family Housing is to empower homeless families to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through shelter, housing, support services and advocacy.

To provide a safe, comfortable and caring "home away from home" for families of children receiving treatment in area medical facilities.

Founded in 1886, Thompson Child & Family Focus provides diverse services in treatment, education and care. Thompson embraces children who are at risk for social

and academic failure by providing intensive treatment, protection, specialized education and stabilized family environments.
