Entrepreneurial spirit and innovation are cultivated by the College through its Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center. This small business incubator offers students the opportunity for professional business internships with up-and-coming companies.

Business Administration, MBAProvides more advanced general management education with selectedconcentrations. The MBA program, designed for students with diverse undergraduate backgrounds, is suitable for both nonbusiness andbusiness graduates. The MBA program prepares individuals for the responsibilities of management in a variety of business endeavors. Meet Dr. Monica HernandezAs a Consumer Behavior Expert, Dr. Monica Hernandez hasconducted research in:

Hernandez, Assistant Professor of Marketing, has published recent articles on these topics in national and international marketing journals. She is working on two new articles that address what motivates consumers to preorder their purchases and Mexican cross-border shopping.

In her Marketing Concepts and Marketing Management classes, she goes beyond delivering typical lessons and surveys to incorporate projects that highlight patented marketing research techniques and analy-sis of consumer brain activity.

“This is knowledge that every MBA graduate should know before they go out into the real world,” said Hernandez. “Our students also benefit greatly from our extensive support of regional economic development through networking opportunities we provide. We emphasize the energy and oil sector, a pillar of our area economy.”

Hernandez says that MBA students hear firsthand from business profes-sionals about their experiences and day-to-day challenges.

Meet Dr. Corinne Valadez Dr. Corinne Valadez, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, teaches graduate courses on Culture, Language and Cognition, Multicultural Literacy and a Literacy Research Seminar. As Program Coordinator forthe Master of Reading program, she prepares students for state competencies and Reading Specialist Standards for the International Reading Association.

“Our program offers students a variety of experiences to engage in reading clinics, participate in research studies with their professors and present at major conferences that are specific to their discipline,” she said. “Many of our students have also published scholarly work.”

Valadez says these hands-on opportunities help graduates assume leadership roles within their school districts. Others who graduate with a Master of Science in Reading or in Curriculum & Instruction often become Reading Specialists or Curriculum Coordinators.

“Our students are prepared to provide expert instruction, assessment and leadership for these types of programs allthe way up to district-wide levels,” she said. “Many of our doctoral students have been hired to teach at universitiesacross the country.”

Meet Dr. Yvonne CastilloDr. Yvonne Castillo’s interests include working with victims of human trafficking and studying both gerontology and the challenges caregivers of elderly family members face. As Director of the Counseling and Training Clinic, Castillo creates a “training ground” for graduate students to develop their professional counselor identities.

During practicums and internship coursework, student counselors meet with clients and gain firsthand experience in dealing with issues such as anger and stress management, anxiety anddepression. She has teamed up with colleagues to develop a training program for Dialectical Behavior Therapy to help graduate students assist individuals with borderline personality disorders.

“We provide our students with opportunities to work with clients who face life-challenging situations,” said Castillo.“Our students also receive the tools they need to developthemselves professionally by presenting their research atnational and state conferences and participating in national and state counselor organizations.”

In addition, Castillo and Dr. Mary Alice Fernandez developed a Bilingual Certificate that will soon be available to help meet the mental health service needs of a rapidly increasing Hispanicpopulation in Texas.

She has presented before governmental groups, published articles for various journals and has even written a book on environmental crime and the media.

As coordinator of the University’s Master in Public Administration program,Jarrellprovidesstudentswithtraditional,onlineandappliedexperiences to prepare them for leadership positions in the ever-changing, complex and diverse public service environment.

“In the capstone course, students often work on projects to improve differentaspectsofthecommunity,”saidJarrell.“Studentstaketheircapstone projects seriously, and blend their academic and profes-sional interests to help lead them into future career paths.”

Meet Dr. Bunny ForgioneThere are many characteristics attributed to good nurses: educated, caring, compassionate, kind, engaging and a good listener are just a few. Dr. Bunny Forgione, the Associate Dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences, is all of those things and much more. Forgione, with her calm, soothing voice and bright smile stands as an example for the students who learn from her.

“I encourage my students to be patient advocates, using integrity and caring in their health promotion for their patients and clients,” said Forgione. “I want them to feel comfortable doing the right thing to protect their patients and not to be intimidated by outside factors.”

Forgione is a nationally recognized expert in maternal-fetal attachment and childbirth education. She specializes in the maternal/newborn field. Forgione serves as the Emeritus Chair for the March of Dimes Texas State Program Services Committee, and has been involved with the nonprofit organization for over a decade. In 2011, she was appointed by the Texas Health and Human Services commissioner to the Healthy Texas Babies Expert Panel, as part of the Texas Healthy Babies Initiative. She has received numeroushonorsincludingtheTexasNursesAssociation(District17)Nurse of the Year Award, Nurse Week Magazine’s Nurse of the Year finalist award, and the Excellence in Teaching Award from both the Island University and the Texas A&M University System.

Forgione says it is amazing to see the growth of students from the first time they come into their classes until the day they graduate. She says it is won-derful seeing their “aha” moments and that she loves talking to students about all of the opportunities nursing offers.

Family Nurse Practitioner Program, MSN Takes the registered nurse to the next level of Advanced

Practice Nurse. As a family nurse practitioner, individuals

would have the specialized knowledge and skills to provide

primary care for patients, generally in the community and

outpatient settings. Students who successfully complete the

online MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner program are eligible

to take national certification examinations that qualify them

to assume roles as primary care providers in the community.

The program educates students in developing, maintaining and managing complex computer-based information systems, and provides the experienced professional with analytical skills necessary to stay abreast of the changing field of computing.

Geospatial Surveying Engineering, MS Provides students with knowledge and skills focusing on the research, design, development and use of technologies in geospatial surveying engineering. The program builds upon the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited undergraduate Geographic InformationScienceprogram(GISc)andtheexistinggeographicinformation science concentration in the Master’s in Computer Science program. Due to the diversity of geospatial applications, the program is purposely designed to offer breadth in the coursework. The Master of Science in Geospatial Surveying Engineering degree is offered both entirely online and on campus. Geospatial Computing Sciences, PhD–currently in approval process.

Department of Life SciencesBiology, MSPromotes competency in applying scientific methods of investigation to research in biology. Biology graduate students are expected to conduct original research. Topics for graduate research range from molecules to ecosystems, and use an array of modern tools from molecular techniques to global geographic information systems. An in-depth education and specialized skills help students develop a sense of creative independence that will allow them to contribute to a variety of professions and fields of scholarship.

Fisheries & Mariculture, MS Students, emphasizing in either area, enjoy opportunities to study the ecologically and commercially important Gulf of Mexico species as well as economically important cultured marine species. This degree prepares graduate students for a career in either the private or public sector in fisheries, mariculture or aquaculture. Students are prepared for these roles with a combination of a strong core curriculum and intensive hands-on research. Faculty members supervise student research on topics ranging from fisheries ecology to habitat restoration and aquatic animal nutrition. This degree program is also associated with the Peace Corps Master’s International program. Students accepted to both programs receive internship credit for the Peace Corps experience and the MS upon completion of their tour of service. Our students have served in Mexico, Panama and Guinea-Bissau, but placement varies with country needs.

Marine Biology, MS & PhDDesigned for students with an interest in one or several sub-disciplinesof marine biology who wish to pursue careers in higher education, government or private industry. This degree is unique because it is aninterdisciplinarydegreeprogram(IDP)combiningthestrengthsofthree universities within the Texas A&M University System; Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Galveston, and Texas A&M University. Students can choose courses from any campus and form committees with any of the participating IDP faculty. The principal strengths of this marine biology program lie in the international recognition, scholarly productivity, and extramural funding of its diverse faculty, as well as the strategic location of two campuses on the Gulf of Mexico.

Meet Dr. Paul MontagnaDr. Paul Montagna is highly regarded in the areas of eco-system studies, freshwater resources, water quality and environmental statistics. He is known for his research on the impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and for his expertise on “dead zones” in the Gulf of Mexico, which he has studied for more than 20 years.

As Endowed Chair for Ecosystems and Modeling at the Harte Research Institute, Montagna mentors students as part of the University’s Coastal and Marine System Science PhD, Marine Biology M.S. and PhD, and Environmental Science M.S. Programs.

“What people may not realize is that the work we’re doing at the HRI matters to every living human and organism along the Gulf of Mexico,” said Montagna. “Our CMSS PhD program is like no other because we are training future generations to think in interdisciplinary ways to maintain and ensure the future health of the Gulf for years to come.”

Montagna teaches graduate and doctoral classes on topics that include environmental statistics and mathematical ecology. Students learn to code programs that manipulate databases, calculate biodiversity, and analyze large, complex environ-mental data sets.

Department of Physical &Environmental SciencesEnvironmental Science, MS Provides a rich and rewarding setting in which students can develop and communicate innovative and practical solutions to present and future environmental challenges, with a focuson urban and coastal issues. Environmental science studentsat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enjoy small specialty classesand diverse laboratory and field experiences. Environmentalscience facilities contain biological, geological and map collections as well as a wide array of field and laboratory equipment. A satellite ground station and image processing lab permit remote-sensing studies. Four-wheel drive vehicles, boats andcamping equipment support field operations. The Natural Resource Center is home to several Texas A&M-Corpus Christi research centers, which grant students access to modern laboratories for environmental research. The curriculum will espe-cially benefit individuals employed in scientific or technical fields who seek advancement or additional training to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Coastal & Marine System Science, PhD Designed to serve graduate students with diverse backgrounds in the natural and computational sciences. The program focuses on integrative concepts that have emerged in recent years, linking biogeochemistry, geographic information science, ecosystem dynamics, and quantitative modeling. This program also promotes interdisciplinary studies of the coastal zone that integrate natural science with socio-economic sciences. Ideal candidates will have backgrounds in some combination of biology, chemis-try, computer science, geology, oceanography, engineering, and geographic information science. Students who earn this degree are typically employed in teaching or research positions in universities, or in pure research applications at specialized institutions or governmental agencies.

Meet Dr. Blair Sterba-BoatwrightDr. Blair Sterba-Boatwright is a Professor of Mathematics who literally wrote the book when it comes to his subject. Sterba-Boatwright is also the author of Modeling for the Millions, which was used as a textbook for several years at the Island University. Sterba-Boatwright uses his statistical expertise to solve problems dealing with coastal ecology, marine animals and other areas of biology.

Sterba-Boatwright does more than teach students to put numbers on pa-per. By employing statistics to eliminate random chance as an explanation for experimental results, he helps graduate students analyze data involving subjects such as the changing populations of shark and flounder in the Gulf of Mexico, the survival of coral polyps under adverse conditions and the size of hurricane storm surges.

“The questions I receive can usually be linked to the human impact on or-ganisms and the environment,” said Sterba-Boatwright, who came to the University in 1989. “As a result of statistical modeling, we can determine if population numbers are steady or declining and even the impact of human activities.”

Sterba-Boatwright is gradually stepping away from live graduate class lectures to focus on using the opportunities provided by the Internet to teach in new ways. He also incorporates online capabilities and parallel computing to extend what statistical calculations are possible. He says his favorite classes to teach are the Statistics for Biology and Environmental Science courses.

“The students are always bringing me interesting problems or applications to think about, which is what makes teaching fun,” said Sterba-Boatwright. “I really enjoy the interaction with students. The best part is when you can tell that your students understand a concept well enough to start working with it independently.”

Sterba-Boatwright was the 2010-2011 Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi nominee for the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation’s Piper Professorship, which honors professors from across Texas for their outstanding academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement. He has also received The Texas A&M University System’s Student Recognition Awardfor Teaching Excellence, and, with his family, has provided two scholarship endowments for deserving students at the University.

Department of Mathematics& StatisticsMathematics, MS Prepares students for careers in education, science and industry, and serves the community by providing expertise to local schools, coastal industries and research centers. Students pursuing this degree will choose between the Applied and Computational Mathematics and the Curriculum Content option. The Applied and Computational Mathematics option will especially benefit individuals employed in scientific or technical fields seeking advancement or additional training to enhance their knowledge and skills, or those preparing for a career in higher education instruction or building a foundation for doctoral studies in a mathematical field. The Curriculum Content option specifically addresses the needs of secondary teachers wishing to enhance their skills in learning, teaching and understanding mathematics.
