Brooke, 24, and Sam, 30, Summers’September wedding was the right mixof modern style with a classic touchdraped in whimsy.

The couple brought a band ofmerry friends and family together tocelebrate their love, which hascrisscrossed half the country, right inthe heart of Des Moines.

Big Apple Proposal

So the story goes. Boy and girl meet at carnival. Boyand girl begin a relationship. There’s this funny feelingcalled love. Then the boy, Sam, went to visit Brooke inNew York City, where she was living at the time. Theygrabbed sushi, walked around Central Park where hesaid something about a surprise.

“We walked up to a beautiful apartment complexwhere Sam had rented a suite filled with roses andpopped the question right there!” Brooke said. “I had noidea it was coming and was in complete shock. We spentthe rest of the night calling our friends and family whowere anxiously waiting to see if Ihad said yes.”

Planning Process

As the wedding approached,Sam and Brooke got to craftingtheir DIY dream wedding. Brooke,a talented designer, began byillustrating the invitations; an EastVillage stationery shop,Ephemera, printed them.

the video for the vivacious couple. “If you can afford it, hire a videographer,” Brooke said. “It’s

great to go back and re-live the day in motion.” 720-663-9514; [email protected]: An often-overlooked fact in personal wedding prep is

the grooming of the groom. Sam had his good friend, and localbarber, Jordan Peterson cut and style his hair before the wedding.

[email protected]: Brooke relied on The English Rose to gather a luxe

pastel bridal bouquet playing off the couple’s main wedding colorsof light pink, gold and mint. The men sported complementary palepink and ivory boutonnieres.

515-419-6566; theenglishrosedsm.comDress: As Brooke walked down the aisle, the simplistic,

stunning swish of her Jim Hjelm Bridal gown from An ElegantAffair in Cedar Falls turned all heads.

319-277-5655; anelegantaffairbridal.com Menswear: Friends who travel can be excellent wedding

associates. Sam has a friend who teaches English in Seoul, Korea, who worked with a local tailor to create the custom black tuxedo.

“I went and had about 20 measurements done and crossed myfingers,” Sam said.

Surprisingly, no final alterations were needed. To top the look En route from the ceremony to reception, the party stopped at Union Park for photos atthe Heritage Carousel. FIGMENT ART PHOTOGRAPHY/SPECIAL TO JUICE

Elegant Ceremony

With 15 of their best men and womenin the wedding party, Brooke walkeddown the stone path behind theSalisbury House in the midst of a fullbloom flowers and grateful guests.

Venue: “September in Iowa is one ofthe best times of the year, so we knewwe wanted a venue that was outdoorsand beautiful,” Brooke said. “Nothingbeats the Salisbury House.”

Located south of Grand Avenue, thehistoric mansion provides a scenicbackdrop to a number of events —Gatsby Gala, Shakespeare on the Lawn— and it was the perfect setting for thecouple’s idyllic affair.

4025 Tonawanda Drive, 515-274-1777;salisburyhouse.org

Catering: The couple coordinatedwith Mary Smith, owner of Park & EatCatering to serve up a lovely luncheonafter the ceremony.

“Mary went above and beyond whatwe ever would have expected from acaterer,” Brooke said. “We decided notto use a wedding planner and Mary wasalways there to help fill in the blanks.”

515-223-0018

Transportation: An old-fashionedstreetcar from Smithson Limousinetransported the large wedding party

from the Salisbury House to Wooly’sfor the reception.

“We made a pit stop at Union Park toride the Heritage Carousel, which madefor some great photos,” Sam said.

Rousing Reception

On a fantastic fall evening there isno better place to drift, from gardensoiree to sparkler infused get-downdance party, than the East Village.

Summers is one of the owners of musicvenue Wooly’s, and on the night ofSeptember 21, 2013 Wooly’s centerstage was all about the newlyweds.

Venue: Sam described the space as a“blank canvas.” They transformed it(with the help of family the nightbefore the wedding) into a livelylocation of light-up love.

Take it from them

After planning their wonderfulwedding the couple had a few usefultidbits to pass along.

Sam recommended referencingwedding blogs with tactical planningtimelines.

“If you are doing it yourself withouta wedding planner, try to tackle oneproject at a time,” he said. “If you get tomany fires going at once it can getreally stressful.”

Brooke added that stressing toomuch over a theme or certain style canbe detrimental to the big day.

“If you make your decisions fromthe heart, your day will be a reflectionof who you are as a couple,” Brookesaid.

“And, don’t leave all your DIYprojects until the week before.”

Back in the day, before white gowns, rings and “I do,” Casey, now 26, andAngela, now 24, Poldberg were justfriends. They grew up together inAdel and started hanging out a fewyears after high school. Back in 2009they were first the best of friends, which evolved into them beingtogether. On October 12, 2013 theyvowed to be together forever.

Proposal double take Casey and Angela’s trail from “will you” to “I do” was

a winding one. Active cyclists and campers, Casey askedAngela to marry him one night in September 2012 attheir High Trestle Trail campsite. Shethought he was kidding, then he gaveher “the prettiest key ring a girl couldask for,” Angela said.

A few months later it was Angela’sturn to surprise her future groom. Itwas his birthday and she gathered alltheir friends and family for a surpriseparty. Little did she know Caseyplanned to propose that night and sheended up with a dazzling diamond ringat the bottom of her champagne glass.

Precise planning:Website: The couple created a

website (http://caseyangela.ourwedding.com/) to share all of theinformation for guests such as whereto stay, where they registered and thewedding party lineup.

Wedding dresses: The brideaccomplished an impressive feat ofrocking two different, delightfuldresses for under $1,000.

“The dress I wore for the ceremonyand dinner was a Pronovias one-shoulder lace gown purchased atSchaffer’s Impromptu,” Angela said.“I’ve never felt so beautiful!”

She did a fast change into asparkling Adrianna Papell dress sheadored immediately upon spotting onthe popular wedding blog, Style MePretty.

The seven bridesmaids sourced theirstyle from Schaffer’s Bridal in a mix oftaupe, chocolate and wine frocks.

Reception:Yard games were played, cocktails

consumed and hors d’oeuvresimmediately followed the 3 p.m.ceremony. The main receptioncontinued well into the night. With thehigh ceilings and large dance floor, the

inside of the ceremony venue wastransformed into a home of memorymaking.

“My biggest fear was to have anempty dance floor, and it was packedthe entire night with friends andfamily!” Angela said. “A doughnut bar, photo booth and home-brewed IPA beerwe called ‘Tandem’ made the nightquite a party!”

Take it from themThe couple shared that one of the

most important aspects of making thewedding unique is to not worry whatothers will think.

“Everyone has this jaded image ofwhat a wedding should be, when inreality it can be whatever you want it tobe,” Angela said. “If you don’t want towear white, don’t. And, if you want adoughnut bar instead of cake … feedeveryone doughnuts!”

They also recommended avoidingpotential price-altering labels.

“Be thrifty and avoid anything with“wedding” in it. Vendors double theprice on the most basic of goods just tomake a profit from it being a wedding-specific item.”

The couple’s history goes back to their hometown of Adel. BEN EASTER/SPECIAL TO JUICE

Happy new year! As the clock struck12, it rang in not just 2014 and resolu-tions, but the first day of marriagefor newlyweds Jeff Ackley, 30, andJaimie Miller-Ackley, 26. With partyhats and horns, friends and familygathered at the couple’s weddingreception on Des Moines’ south sideto celebrate the festive occasion

surrounded by glittering gold, black, romantic red andshimmering silver.

New Year’s Eve for Jeff and Jamie is not just anexcuse to drink champagne and hit the town. It hasserved as the date for important relationship milestones.

Jeff met Jaimie when he saw her dancing, by herself,at People’s (now the Venue) on the eve of 2009. He wasout with the guys; she with thegirls. They exchanged numbersand the next morning Jeff textedher. Fast forward to New Year’sEve 2013. They were at Wooly’s andJeff proposed. Her answer? Yes!

After their one-month weddinganniversary, the couple spokeabout how their big day flew byafter a yearlong engagement.

Big helpers: The Ackleys had asizable wedding (15 groomsmenand bridesmaids total), but theyalso had many helpers who volun-teered in big ways. This helpedthem stick with their budget-conscious approach while stillensuring that it reflected theirclassy personal style.

“I wouldn’t have changed a thing,”Jeff said. “Except if I could haveslowed down time, I would have.”

The couple did not hire an eventplanner, but definitely would haveconsidered one if they had a shortengagement period.

“If your wife-to-be isn’t an eventplanner, definitely hire one,” Jeff said.

Jaimie’s parting advice was simple:“At the end of the day, it is one day, butit’s a big day. Stick with what youknow.”

“Hallelujah,” LeonardCohen, Jeff Buckley orJohn Cale: This has becomemore popular over theyears, and while it’s a greatsong, it tells a pretty bitterstory. “Love is not a victorymarch, it’s a cold and it’s abroken Hallelujah,” “All I’veever learned from love washow to shoot at someonewho outdrew you,” “Andeven though it all wentwrong ...” Was someoneexpecting Leonard Cohen towrite a happy song?

“I Will Always Love You,”Dolly Parton or WhitneyHouston: This is a greatlove song, but it’s not abouta romance that ends well.“If I should stay I would onlybe in your way,” “Bitter-sweet memories, that is allI’m taking with me,” “Ihope you have all you’vedreamed of and I wish youjoy and happiness.” Thissong is basically one big “Ilove you, but I’m not in lovewith you.”

“Every Breath YouTake,” The Police:It’s prettywell-known at thispoint that this isn’t alove song, it’s acreepy stalking song.Sting has gone onrecord that it’s“sinister and ugly”and that people havemisinterpreted it as alove song. Despite allthis, it still getsplayed.

“Marry You,” BrunoMars: This song feels like itwas made for gettingplayed at weddings, but ifyou pay attention to thelyrics it seems like thismarriage might betroubled. “Who cares ifwe’re trashed,” “We’relooking for somethingdumb to do,” “If we wakeup and you wanna breakup, that’s cool.” Howromantic.

“Maggie May,” Rod Stewart:It sounds sweet and innocentenough, but Rod’s relationshipwith Maggie is a little weird. Thelyrics tell the story of a student(let’s pretend it’s college tonegate the creepiness a bit) whois lured away from home by anolder woman who wasseemingly in some kind of powerposition (”All I need was a friendto lend a guiding hand, but youturned into a lover ...”). It’sbasically Mary Kay Letourneau:The Song.

What not to play at your weddingIF YOU GO TO A LOT OF WEDDINGS, YOU’LL HEAR THE SAME SONGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

BUT SOME STAND OUT AS BEING KIND OF ODD PICKS FOR A ROMANTIC CEREMONY. HERE

ARE FIVE SONGS THAT SOUND ROMANTIC, BUT THEY REALLY AREN’T. TELL YOUR DJ TO

On your big day, make sure to follow these tips for a flawless look:

DO

» Schedule a makeup trial prior to the big day. This should be amust, not an option, unless your makeup artist is your best friendand knows you better than anyone. But even then, you still should. You will want to make sure you and the makeup artist are on thesame page. A dark brown smoky eye could mean somethingentirely different to you than it does to your artist.

» Utilize Pinterest and even photos from weddings you’veattended where you thought the bride looked especially stunning. For makeup artists, who are visual people to begin with, photos area wonderful resource and tell us exactly what you’re attracted to.

» Discuss what look you’d like for your bridesmaids’ makeup. I know it sounds likeyou’re being a control freak, but if you let everyone choose for themselves, you couldend up with one bridesmaid rocking a super smoky eye and another with a bold redlip. In photos, it can look inconsistent and like everyone is attending a differentwedding.

» Ask for lip liner under your lipstick or gloss, even if you never wear it and think it’sfrom 1985. Lip liner will give your lip color something to anchor to, ensuring it willwear much longer. Make sure to fill in your entire mouth, not just the outside edge.

» Ask your makeup artist for a little lipstick and maybe a little concealer to touch upwith throughout the day. Most makeup artists will want their masterpiece to lookperfect all day so they’ll be happy to send you with some of the lip color or a dab ofconcealer if you need to touch up.

» Pack some blotting sheets in your bag and utilize for touch-ups rather than layeringon powder.

» Consider a teeth whitening session the week of your wedding.

DON’T

» Don’t apply sunscreen prior to your makeup application. You may have heard this before butthe sunscreen can reflect a camera’s flash back, causing your face to look white. It isn’t as muchof issue with professional photography but camera phones will pick it up.

» Don’t request a look too similar to your everyday look. This is the day of all days! Natural isfine, but you’re going to wear more makeup than usual and that is OK.

» Don’t get a peel, spray tan, waxing or threading less than three days prior to your weddingday. If you haven’t ever had a spray tan or waxed, do a trial run for this too. Don’t wait untilthree days before the big day to get your eyebrows waxed if you never have as some peoplecan be sensitive to the wax.

» Don’t do a bright red lip unless this is your go-to look. This is not the day to go big and boldor trendy.

» Don’t be afraid to venture outside the french manicure.

» Don’t do a thick line of liner. I can’t really think of any instance that thick liner looks soft andromantic.

» Don’t skip a setting spray.

» Don’t ask your makeup artist to cover tattoos for anyone but you. I hear it a lot. “Mygrandma won’t like it,” or “I don’t want my mother-in-law to see them.” If your tattoos botheryou in your wedding gown, cover them. But only for you.

» Don’t choose a look with harsh, severe lines, including overarched brows or sharp angles.

» Don’t glitter yourself. A light shimmering powder can highlight collar bones and shoulderssubtly, but no glitter should be present on the bride.
