Dog-Friendly Christmas Cake That Your

Dog Will Love! Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes For the Cake: 80g gluten and wheat free flour (you can try almond flour or quinoa flour) 2 tbsp low fat natural yogurt 1 tbsp chopped Sweet potato 1 tbsp chopped Papaya 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 tsp olive oil 1 tsp honey 1 tsp cinnamon 1 egg For the 'Icing': 180 grams low fat cream cheese 1 tsp olive oil To Decorate: 40g Flour (gluten and wheat free) 1 tsp coconut oil 1 tsp all natural red, green, pink or blue food colouring, get creative! Method: The Cake Preheat your oven to 180°C Gas 4. Soak the chopped sweet potato and papaya in warm water for 5 minutes to soften then drain. If you don’t have a very sweet Papaya then you can add some dried banana and coconut. Mix together the flour, egg, yogurt, baking powder, vanilla, olive oil, honey and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Fold in the softened sweet potato and papaya into the mixture and stir well. Pour the mixture into a greased 5" sandwich tin. If you don't have a suitable sandwich tin then fill three greased muffin cups leaving a little room at the top for the mixture to expand. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool. The Icing To make the icing, beat the cream cheese and oil together until fluffy. Spread it over the top and sides of cake and use the back of a spoon to fluff it up. The Decorations To make a holly decoration mix together gluten free flour and coconut oil then gradually add water until you have made a dough. Add the food colouring and blend into the dough with a spoon then chill it in the fridge for 20 minutes before you get creative!

Pink Himalayan Salt for Dogs.

You might have noticed the big craze at the moment over Himalayan salt and the amazing health benefits it has for us. From using it in food to drinking it in water and even using it as a deodorant stick or bath salts. It really is amazing stuff! Lots of people don’t realize that it has just as good health benefits for our dogs. Incase you aren’t aware here are some of the great benefits of pink Himalayan salt:

• Creates an electrolyte balance • Increases hydration • Regulates water content both inside and outside of cells • Prevents muscle cramping • Aids in proper metabolic functions • Strengthens bones • Lowers blood pressure • Helps the intestines absorb nutrients • Improves circulation • Dissolves and eliminates sediment to remove toxins

Just remember that pink Himalayan salt is very different to table salt or rock salt and in some ways it is quite the opposite. There are a few ways you can add some Pink Himalayan salt into your dogs diet. You can sprinkle a very small amount onto their food a couple of times a week, sprinkle some in their water each time you fill it up or you can purchase quite large rocks 1 – 20 and sit it somewhere in your house so your dog can go and have a lick of it whenever they like. Dogs are incredible at self-medicating so if they are craving a mineral (Himalayan salt contains 84 minerals and trace elements) they can just go over to the salt rock and lick it as much as they like. If you are having trouble finding a big piece of Himalayan salt you can simply buy a salt lamp and remove the bulb and lead from it. You should be able to find Pink Himalayan salt at your local supermarket though.

Is your dog’s urine burning your lawn? There might be a simple solution to fix it.

This is something we hear about all too often from our clients. Why is my dog’s urine burning our lawn and how do I stop it? Sometimes it can be something as simple as changing their diet or placing some dog rocks in their dog water bowl. Here are a few reasons why your dog’s urine might be burning the grass. Alkaline urine pH, nitrogen load, and high solute concentration of the urine (dehydration). Dogs that are on a cereal based diet (most kibbles) or a diet high in grains and fillers will have a fairly high pH. Because of this their urine will burn the grass when they pee on it. Dogs that are eating a natural RAW diet made up of soft consumable bones and meat will have a lower pH which is ideal for a carnivore and will dramatically reduce burns in the grass. Dogs with very high nitrogen loads can have a product called dog rocks placed into their water bowls which helps to reduce the nitrogen levels of their urine resulting in less burns on the lawn. If you are using a product like dog rocks you need to make sure you are following the directions very carefully for them to be effective. Lots of people think that female dogs burn grass worse than males but this isn’t true. Female dogs tend to squat and dump large amounts of urine in one spot, which will burn the grass much worse than a male dog lifting their leg and spraying urine over a larger area. Another way you can stop your pets urine from burning the lawn is to give the lawn a bit of a hose down each day or if you see your dog do a wee you can quickly hose the area they urinated on. At the end of the day it mainly comes down to a proper diet and a healthy dog with the right pH, if you are concerned about your dogs pH then you can use a pH test strip to sample some of their urine and check to see range it is in, remembering that 6 – 6.5 is the best range for your dog.
