Corridor Fire-Resistance Rating IBC Table 1026.1

• Note that Table 1026.1 does not allow for corridors to be constructed in various non-sprinklered occupancies

– This is an important fact for those buildings having an R-2 occupancy which do not have an automatic sprinkler system installed per NFPA 13 or 13R See footnote c.

Corridors & Elevator LobbiesIBC 3006.2 vs 1020.6

• IBC 3006.2 requires that elevator lobbies be provided unless a listed exception is met—Review IBC 3006.3

• Note that even if the exception for application of IBC 3006.2 is met, the Designer must construct the corridor so as to meet the requirements of IBC 1020.6

108

Page 22: 2015 IBC Means of Egress 1 - BIANEWbianew.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/2015_IBC... · – IBC 1008.1, 1008.3 and 2702.2.11: Is the use of occupancy sensors permitted as a way

• Additionally, note that if the elevator opens into a fire rated corridor, then there shall be actions to either:

– 1) isolate the elevator shaft openings from directly opening into a rated corridor, or else…

– 2) install smoke protection on the doors of the elevator in order to fulfill the requirements of IBC 1020.6.

• Example 3 allows a fire rated corridor to extend to 20 minute fire rated smoke and draft control door assemblies which allows one to enter an elevator lobby. The lobby could be entered by multiple fire rated corridors. Note that enclosed elevator lobbies as permitted by Item 1 of Section 1016.2 shall not be construed as intervening rooms.

Answer: Yes, the use of automatic controls, like occupancy sensors, is an acceptable way of conserving energy while also assuring the lights will be on during normal use of the spaces. When employing such automatic controls, their use must be incorporated into the design such that they will be overridden by the emergency power system upon loss of normal power. In essence, the switch controllers must be equipped for fail-safe operation. – Review UL 924 listed sensors (May 1, 2018)
