Coaching StaffJoe SchlosbergHead Coach • First Season • Northwestern ‘00

Navy Head CoachIntroduced as Navy’s head coach in August of 2015, Schlosberg comes to Annapolis after serving on the staff at nationally-ranked Notre Dame for 14 years, including the last seven as the program’s Associate Head Coach ... Over the past four years (2012-15), the Fighting Irish have competed at the NCAA Championships in each season.

Notre Dame Associate Head CoachNotre Dame’s associate head coach for the last seven seasons, Schlosberg has shown himself to be a consistent winner ... During his 14 total years at Notre Dame, Schlosberg was part of a coaching staff that saw 26 different Fighting Irish crews win gold medals at conference championship regattas and capture 10 straight BIG EAST Conference team titles from 2004-13 ... Individually, Schlosberg guided 17 of those 26 crews beginning with his first title in 2002 as the leader of the varsity four boat ... Notre Dame’s athletic department changed conference affiliation prior to the 2014 school year and Schlosberg and Fighting Irish started competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference against stalwart national programs, Virginia, Syracuse and Louisville ... In each of Notre Dame’s first two years in the ACC, the team finished in second place in the conference’s year-end championship ... Schlosberg and Notre Dame’s success on the conference level carried over into strong results on the national scene, as the Fighting Irish qualified for and competed six times at the NCAA Championships since 2006, including the past four seasons ... Beginning with a ninth-place finish in the program’s first-ever appearance in 2006, Notre Dame twice finished ranked amongst the top-10 ... Taking on a field of 22 teams in 2014, Schlosberg and the Fighting Irish equaled its 2006 result with a ninth-place finish ... At that championship, all three Notre Dame boats qualified for petite final action for the first time in team history with Schlosberg’s varsity four crew finishing in 12th place ... As a result of Notre Dame’s success in 2014, Schlosberg and fellow Fighting Irish assistant Marnie Stahl were recognized as the 2014 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association South Region Staff of the Year.

Notre Dame Assistant CoachSchlosberg was the Fighting Irish’s second assistant coach from September 2001 through June 2006 before being elevated to first assistant for two years from July 2006 until June 2008.

The women’s crew program continues to grow and build upon its winning tradition at the Naval Academy.

The sport made its initial appearance at Navy in the spring of 1978, during the second year women were allowed to attend the Academy. In that first spring, the Midshipmen competed on the junior varsity level, racing Washington College, Trinity of Washington, D.C., and Virginia’s second varsity boats, winning all three regattas.

Women’s crew was elevated to varsity status the following year and the Midshipmen won two varsity races while racing at the Division II level. In 1980, in only its second year of varsity status, Navy competed in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, the largest crew regatta on the East Coast. The varsity eight was third in the Grand Finals and the second varsity also earned a third-place finish.

The following year, the Midshipmen women raced in the well-known San Diego Crew Classic and completed the season with a 6-2 record. The next three seasons found the women showcasing an 18-3 record, including an unbeaten 9-0 mark in 1984.

In 1987, the Midshipmen won the first of six-consecutive Seitz Trophies for outstanding performances by women’s crews at the Dad Vail Regatta. It was in 1992, however, that the Mids enjoyed one of its grandest moments ever in Navy women’s crew history — the Midshipmen not only won the Seitz Trophy at the Dad Vail, but the varsity eight captured a gold medal for the first time and the second varsity eight won its fifth-straight gold medal. The gold medal by the varsity eight allowed the women to claim the Division II national championship in the sport.

In 1991 and ‘92, the assistant coach for the women’s crew team was Lt. Cmdr. Wendy Lawrence, who was a two-year letterwinner in the sport in its fledgling years at Navy. Capt. Lawrence became an astronaut in the

U.S. space program. In 1994, the Navy women won the Anita DeFrantz

Trophy for overall performance by women’s crews at the second annual Champion International Collegiate Regatta. In this event, the varsity eight was first, and with it the honor of being the national champion in women’s crew on the Division II level. The first novice and second novice boats also earned first place showings. It was the second time in three years that the varsity eight was recognized as national champions.

The program took a step up in 1995 by moving to the Division I level and joining the Eastern Sprints League. Racing in the nation’s strongest conference, Navy has steadily improved its performance.

In its initial season of 1995, the varsity eight placed fifth in the Grand Finals and the second varsity was second at the Champion International Collegiate Rowing Championships.

The 1998-99 season was Navy’s best season in the Eastern Association Women’s Rowing Conference (EAWRC). Despite a slow start, the crew posted a 13-7 spring record. A highlight of the season came when the novice four notched the first Eastern Sprints medal earned in Navy rowing history, capturing a silver medal. Posting victories over conference rivals Georgetown, George Washington and Pennsylvania, the varsity eight finished the season by making the petite final of the Eastern Sprints.

The 2005 season marked the first time women’s crew was sponsored by the Patriot League, with Navy sweeping the three boat titles and the overall team championship. In addition, Mike Hughes was selected as the league’s coach of the year, with Navy’s varsity boat garnering boat-of-the-year honors. Hughes would also be named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2013.

The Midshipmen earned their second Patriot League title in 2013 on the strength of titles in the varsity eight and second varsity eight races. Outscoring the runner-up, Bucknell, 35-to-29, Navy received the Patriot League’s first-ever automatic bid in the NCAA Championships. Racing at the NCAAs in Indianapolis, Ind., the Mids finished 20th overall and saw its varsity four boat win the D Final over Boston University, Rhode Island and Marist College.

Patriot League title number three came in 2015 during Hughes’ last season as the Mids’ head coach. Navy swept the three-race slate of championship action to earn the 2015 Patriot League Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The Mids won the varsity four and second varsity eight races before pulling out a come-from-behind victory over Bucknell in the varsity eight event to win the title. In recognition of their respective results Hughes was named the P.L. Coach of the Year and the varsity eight was named the P.L. Boat of the Year.

At the 2015 NCAA’s in Sacramento, Calif., the Mids finished 21st overall with their varsity four boat leading the way and finishing 17th in its event.

The women’s crew team has a history of producing world-class athletes in the sport. Current volunteer assistant coach Karin Hughes (’91), was a member of the 1997 National Rowing Team and earned a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Laurie Coffey (’99), represented the U.S. at the Under-23 World Championship and earned a gold medal at the 1999 World Military Games in Zagreb, Croatia, in the women’s double. Most recently, Katherine Ashton (‘14) competed at the 2013 World Rowing U-23 Championships in Linz, Austria. Ashton and the American squad concluded competition with a second-place finish in the B Final behind Romania.

The Patriot LeagueNow in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic

and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football).

H Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

H Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

H Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

H There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

H Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

H Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

H Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League women’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, includding Navy’s Joseph Greenspan as a first-team selection in men’s soccer.

H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.

H Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2007-08 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season.

H Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.
