LOOK WHAT’S NEW

AT THE ZOO . . . . .

IN GIRLS’ CAMP . . .

The Pony up cabin “pups” is the oldest cabin in camp! In 1975, the girls cabins from

youngest to oldest were the Seahorses, Pintos and Palominos. The Seahorse cabin was above the office and the Pintos were where the fun and

adventure closet is now. The three cabins of boys lived above the chow hall and were

Youngest to oldest Rattlesnakes, Apaches and Commanches. So now the Pony Up cabin has totally been redone and is absolutely beautiful

over 40 years later!

Pony Up Cabin...A new coat of paint inside and out!

A new Kid Dominium has been built for extra climbing for the baby goats in the goat pen.

LONGHORN LAUGHS...

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital

Camp Longhorn Indian Springs campers are given an opportunity to donate merits to St. Jude’s. It all started several years ago when a camper asked if there was any way we could convert his merits to money and give them to a charity. We thought, “Wow, what a wonderful idea! What took us so long! “ Campers all have 2 shopping days..... so only on their second shopping day are they able to use a special check to donate whatever amount they choose. Some campers choose to donate and some campers don’t. It’s totally up to them! At the end of each term we add up all donations and convert it to a dollar value. At the end of the summer we total all four terms and mail a check to St. JUDE. It’s been amazing to hear their stories of why they give and the amount they choose to give. Many give ten merits which is about a dollar. One girl handed me her check and it was for a hundred and fifty merits. She said, “I wanted something that cost a hundred and fifty merits but I don’t really need it so I thought I would donate it.” What a wonderful spirit of giving! We hope that we’re bringing awareness that if everyone gives a little it ends up being a lot! Since we started this in the summer of 2015, our campers have donated over $18,500. We are so proud of all of you! This past summer, campers donated a total of $5,203.44.Attawaytogo!

Fold up the cots, pack your duffle bag and get ready to hit the road! The Longhorn Rangers will be traveling the highways and high mountain passes for another summer of leadership adventure camping in Colorado. Since 1997, the Longhorn Rangers program has had the dual responsibility of helping guide our 10th grade boy campers to become great counselors as well as leading them to adventures that include rock climbing, whitewater rafting, sand dune hiking and much more. Here’s just a sample of a few of the locations visited:

• Mt Capulin National Monument • Pike and San Isabel National Forest • Arkansas River • Great Sand Dunes National Park

Whether camping under the wide open skies or in the close quarters of the Ranger bus, these young men learn not only to be responsible for them-selves, but also for their campers and the lega-cy of Camp Longhorn. We’ll be sending out more information on the trip in the coming months!

Excerpted from “TEX, The Father of Texas Swimming” by Ross Lucksinger

It started with a rare sight: a rancher with clean shoes. While on an off-season trip visiting campers in 1967, Bill Johnson stopped in Hamilton, a small town on the plains of north-central Texas about sixty miles west of Waco. He was getting a bite at

a cafe when he met Seth Williams, a local cattle rancher wearing pearl white sneakers. Bill couldn’t help but comment on Williams’ footwear and he discovered that Seth was a decent tennis player on the side and had just finished a game with his daughter. They began discussing eclectic hobbies and Bill discovered that, along

with tennis, Seth’s present addiction was buying bargains at a military surplus sales. He was buying so much surplus that he was running out of barn space to store all of his acquisitions.

Given that for years Camp Longhorn was run on army surplus, Bill was happy to take a trip out to William’s ranch.

He found more that he expected. It was a massive collection that included, for example, roughly 1,000 six-foot

ladders. Camp was good on ladders, but a constant problem was rain-soaked mattresses under leaky tarps

covering the judo/tumbling slab and the riflery range. All the sprinklers Tex would set out to encourage the grass added to the

problem. Bill found what he thought was an answer to Seth William’s forty-foot long, 10,000-gallon rubber storage tanks. He

decided he would buy the drab, olive-colored, deflated behemoths from Williams and cut them up into a set of new tarps. Johnson

paid his new tennis-playing, cattle-ranching acquaintance a hundred dollars and loaded the tanks into his truck - which

folded into a relatively small bundle when not filled with 10,000 gallons of gas.

When he returned to Camp Longhorn, Johnson unloaded his acquisitions at the canoe bay to store them until he found the time and equipment to cut them into proper rain tarps.

But when he arrived, Bill found two camp employees working with an air compressor. Given that the tanks were tough enough to maintain a seal when being rolled out of cargo planes into the

Gulf of Tonkin, they were able to stay taut when he used the compressor to fill them with 1,337 cubic feet of air. This occured

for no other reason than to serve Bill Johnson’s curiosity for what would happen if he took a giant military oil bladder he had

purchased from a barn outside Hamilton, Texas, filled it with air, and then put it on the water.

The result of Johnson’s experiment with the air-filled gasoline tank turned into the most popular activity at Camp

Longhorn, The Blob, where campers jump from an overhanging tower onto the heavy-duty vinyl monstrosity,

bouncing other campers off into the water.
