Class 3W Newsletter Term 3 2019 Welcome back to Term 3! I can’t believe we are already half way through Year 3! I hope everyone had a fantastic break and is refreshed and ready for some exciting learning experiences ahead. We have a very busy term to look forward to, with some interesting topics and activities relating to our integrated curriculum enquiry question “Why does change make us fearful?” Please keep an eye out for notes coming home and if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to make contact. Here are the units we will be looking at this term: Teacher: Tegan Wicks Email: [email protected] Specialist Lessons School begins at 8.45am. Please ensure students arrive prior to the 8.45am bell so they can have an organised start to the day. Homework is handed out on Monday and due back on Friday each week. Parade: Every Monday at 2.30pm in Girrawheen Place. Everyone is welcome. Library is Thursday from 1:15 – 1:30pm. A library bag is required to borrow books. Music is Tuesday from 2:30 – 3:00pm Choir is Tuesday from 2:00 – 2:30pm. PE is Friday from 12:30 – 1:00pm. For students who participate in Religious Instruction, this is held on Monday from 2.00-2.30pm. They will listen to, view, read and compare a range of stories, with a focus on different versions of the same story. Students will create a retell of “Kumiko and the Dragon”, demonstrate their comprehension and understanding of it, and create and write the next chapter. Students will prepare and present a spoken retell of Kumiko and the Dragon. They will create a multimodal imaginative chapter about overcoming a fear, using software and will comprehend the same story. Maths Students will study number and place value up to 10 000, and investigate number sequences. They will look at odd and even numbers and represent and solve 2 digit and 3 digit addition and subtraction problems. Students will study time to one minute interval, and measure length, capacity and mass. They will explore money and financial mathematics, fractions and decimals, location and transformation and multiplication and division. Students will measure and compare length, mass and capacity. They will represent money values in various ways and count change from financial transactions, represent multiplication and solve multiplication problems, tell time to the nearest minute and solve problems involving time. Science Students will understand how a change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat. They will explore the properties of liquids and solids and understand how to identify an object as a solid or a liquid. Students will conduct an investigation to discover whether ice and chocolate melt in the same way. HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) In HASS students will explore similarities and differences in places near and far. They will look at Australia’s states and territories, the continents of the world, Australia’s neighbours, climate and human and natural features of Australia and its neighbouring countries Students will identify, describe and interpret data about Australian places and explain the importance of making decisions democratically. The Arts Students will explore media arts through animation, sound and characters, to present their next chapter of Kumiko. Students will create a media arts project using Puppet Pals. Health This semester focuses on decision making skills used to select and demonstrate strategies to help students stay healthy and physically active. Students will describe healthy and active strategies and activity plans. Technology Technology will link in with our integrated curriculum about change and fear. They will investigate different properties of materials and repurpose items. Students will repurpose materials to design and create a dragon.

Curriculum focus – what we will be working on in class this term

Content Assessment

English Students will examine stories from different perspectives. They will listen to, view, read and compare a range of stories, with a focus on different versions of the same story. Students will create a retell of “Kumiko and the Dragon”, demonstrate their comprehension and understanding of it, and create and write the next chapter.
