I believe that the sheer strength and tenacity of women both past and present, who have tirelessly persisted to achieve equality, justice and recognition in our world, despite at times overwhelming adversity, is truly extraordinary. This continued fearlessness and determination gives me hope for a brighter future.

“ Going into my future I am so glad I spent my formative years at Sacré Cœur. My experience is so hard to sum up with words, because it is more of a feeling.”

The Class of 2019 are exceptional young women, dedicated to embracing both courage and kindness – the Sacré Cœur way. Through their dedication and with the support of their teachers and families, they have finished their years at Burke Road as young women ready to change the world.

Madeline (Madi) Flinn, as Dux, gives us an insight into what it meant to be a Sacré Cœur student and what contributed to her success.

“I had a really great support system at School and at home. My teachers motivated me to do the best that I could and my friends were a constant source of encouragement. My parents too were a fantastic help in times of stress as they didn’t want or expect perfection from me.”

“ I think the School environment really fosters an attitude of determination, persistence and resilience.”

Achieving your personal best in VCE is about making good choices in the years leading up to and including the VCE. “I started off by choosing subjects I liked. I did two languages which sounds a bit crazy because it is such a heavy workload. However it worked out for me because they were the subjects I genuinely liked, and I think if you like studying for your subjects, you will be more motivated and less stressed.”

Achieving VCE success also means facing the challenge and not backing away from it. “I was a bit scared of the whole VCE process but then realized that I just had to get on with it and start learning, despite my fears.”

“ I didn’t need to be perfect at anything. I just needed to try my hardest and actually do the work rather than waiting for perfection to happen.”

The final year can seem daunting with all the talk of SACs and exams, and the pressure on the end result. Madi was no different. Her parents describe her as very driven in her studies, but she still had doubts. “I initially couldn’t picture myself doing a SAC in Year 12 even though I had already done a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11, because five subjects seemed insurmountable. But gradually I worked my way through them as the year progressed. Then I got to the September holidays and again I couldn’t picture myself doing the final exams, so I spent a whole week processing the challenges to come.”

“I decided I needed to take it one day at a time and do what I could for one day. Eventually I got my confidence up enough that I could study to the extent that I wanted to.”

Now in the new year with her VCE behind her, Madi reflects on her days at Sacré Cœur. “I remember everyone being close. It really was a second home to me, sometimes I would find myself thinking that I was “going home” on the way to school. Sacré Cœur is very important to me.”

Madi looks back on her last year of school with warm memories. “The best thing about Year 12, even though it was really challenging, is that every day I would come to school with a great group of people and amazing teachers. We were all in the same boat so we really got an opportunity to grow closer as a year level, and that was probably my favourite thing about my final year, other than the bigger school events.”

This year Madi begins her studies in Biomedicine at The University of Melbourne with a view to study Medicine, specialising in women’s health. As an empowered Sacré Cœur woman, Madi believes this is an obvious choice.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019The Sacré Cœur community is immensely proud of the results of the Class of 2019 at an individual and collective level. They also made a significant contribution to our community over their final year to ensure it was a memorable one for all.

Success comes in countless forms at Sacré Cœur and I am especially pleased that many of our girls achieved at a level greater than their original hopes and expectations. None of this success is possible without the highest quality teachers and I thank them all for their dedication and expert guidance.

I am confident they will approach their future studies with the confidence gained from their experience at Sacré Cœur.
