After successful touring of the United States, UK and Germany, he was signed to Delmark Records in 1967, where he recorded West Side Soul, one of the first full length blues albums ever. Sam's breakthrough performance was at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1969, which won him many bookings in the United States and Europe. His life and career was cut short when he suddenly died of a heart attack in December of the same year. He was only 32 years old. ‘To call West Side Soul one of the great blues albums, one of the key albums (if not the key album) of modern electric blues is all true, but it tends to diminish and academicize Magic Sam's debut album. This is the inevitable side effect of time, when an album that is decades old enters the history books, but this isn't an album that should be preserved in amber, seen only as an important record. Jesse Fuller Move On Down The Line FLED3074 5020393307420 CD F LEDG'LING BLUES An important document of an oft-neglected historical area of American vernacular music and a tribute to the talents of a quite remarkable folk-blues musician. Fuller, "The Lone Cat" (1896 - 1976) was one of the great blues troubadours. A remarkably expressive singer and fine 12-string guitarist, Fuller developed his unique one-man-band style around his fotdella (foot-operated bass) and harmonica/kazoo-rig. This CD includes his earliest recordings, including the original version of his classic San Francisco Bay Blues, together with a splendid session taped in London in 1965 for Topic Records. One track - John Henry - has been unavailable since the early 1960s. In the 1960s, the decade when the wider world reached out to embrace him, Fuller's San Francisco Bay Blues was one of the most popular numbers in the repertoire of blues and folk singers. But Fuller was not a blues musician, although he played bl ues. Neither was he strictly speaking a folk musician as the term was then understood, for his act incorporated elements of minstrelsy and vaudeville - in other words, show business - and he'd travelled far beyond the "rurals" to work in Hollywood. His own term "folk songster" best describes who he was and what he did. Nic Jones Penguin Eggs 6S229003 8712618900314 LP 6 SPICES FO LK Greatly influenced by Martin Carthy, whose percussive guitar style Jones adopted for his own, he first surfaced during the late 1960s as a member of the group the Halliard, mounting a solo career in 1970 with his debut album Ballads and Songs. A collection of traditional tunes distinguished by Jones' outstanding instrumental work, the record also established his mastery of the long ballad; a self-titled effort followed in 1971, but was his last album for six years -- the follow-up, Noah's Ark Trap finally appeared in 1977, with From the Devil a Stranger appearing a year later. Around that same time Jones also joined the short-lived group Bandoggs, releasing an eponymous LP in 1978; other projects included appearances on albums from artists including Richard Thompson and June Tabor . 1980's Penguin Eggs -- named "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker and Froots -- was his final new recording; in 1982 he was critically injured in an auto accident and forced to retire from performing.

The two musicians decided to form a band, which would take the culture of Galicia, an autonomous region in the north west of Spain, as a starting point. Miguel , player of the Galician bagpipe called gaita, is born in this area and started to study the instrument at a young age. Soon he began to compose his own music as well. In 2005 the first album Imaxes was released, a joyous and melancholic album at the same time. The cd was well received and the band performed on Belgian, French and Spanish festivals. The band keeps growing and Baptiste Argouarc’h (violin), Filip Lambrechts (guitar) and Gauthier Lisein (drums, percussion, clarinet) put their own mark on the developing sound. This evolution has resulted into the new album Airexa (‘sea breeze’), where all members contribute to the final result, unlike the first album, which was conceived by Miguel and Marc only. It vastly enriched the diversity and versatility of the repertoire and the arrangements. The gaita still is the central instrument, but new influences are apparent. The lyrics dwell upon various social themes. Despite the influences from other parts of the world, the music is still embedded in Galician culture. For this reason the album was recorded in Galicia on the small island ‘A Illa de Arousa’. The soft sea breeze on this island gave the album its name, but the poetic and meditative setting also helped the musicians to contemplate on things that were important to them. The album Three Scenes of War has 22 songs, which represent three of these wars that were fought in Belgium: the 15th and 16th century was the time of the ‘Beggars’. In the 18th century the French and the English fought each other and -probably the most horrible war of all- World War I in the last century. The songs and melodies all have a relationship to one of these periods and they represent all sorts of viewpoints towards war. Nevertheless one thing is clear, war was -and is- never a pleasant thing. Sun Ra Sun Song 6S229004 8712618900413 LP 6 SPICES JA ZZ This recording initiated a much larger audience to the multifarious and otherwise logical post-bop rhythms of one of jazz's most notorious and equally respected figures. The sides which comprise Sun Song were recorded on July 12, 1956 by Tom Wilson, who would go on to produce such rock luminaries as Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground, among others. Wilson's use of Chicago's premier Universal Recording Studio accounts for the amazing crispness and attention to nuance omnipresent throughout the disc. Ra's highly arithmetical approach to bop was initially discounted by noted jazz critic Nat Hentoff as "repetitious" with phrases which were "built merely on riffs with little development." In retrospect, however, it is obvious there is much more going on here. Among the musical innovations woven into compositions, such as the up-tempo "Brainville" and "Transition," are advanced time signatures coupled with harmonic scales based on Ra's mathematical equations. The intricate harmonies and complicated arrangements on "Possession" and "Sun Song" are inspiring in their deceptive simplicity. This may well be the most accessible work in Sun Ra's massive catalogue. It is likewise one of the most beautiful. Over the course of two months, the four companions walked 1,000 km in the footsteps of their medieval brothers and sisters. Certain things may have changed since medieval times, yet the mechanics of walking have stayed the same and as a result they endured the same sort of hardships, pains and tribulations along the way. In his pack, Oliver carried his violin. When he found a church or cathedral that was acoustically enticing… and open… he played and recorded in these spectacular, sonic spaces – 25 different churches in two months of walking.Oliver’s violin sings in these magnificent Romanesque churches, each space different in character and resonance. And the sense of place is strong – pilgrims praying, children playing, birds, bells, footsteps, passing snatches of conversation, and the sounds of the buildings themselves. The sumptuous package contains a 28 page, four language booklet with stunning BW phot os by fellow pilgrim Peter Coffman. Sadly Oliver passed away in the summer of 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. A great loss to the world of music. Lisandro Adrover Meets the Metropole Orchestra S62605 8712618626054 CD SAPHRANE WO RLD Parallel with his career as a musician, Lisandro Adrover [Argentina, 1945] also engaged himself in composing, arranging and conducting. This helped him to establish his name in the musical world, on both national and international levels. As a young boy he learned to master the bandoneon, and at the age of 14 he made his radio debut as a bandoneon player in a broadcast by a number of Argentinean radio stations. In the 1960s he played with the José Basso orchestra and performed on stage with people like Roberto Goyeneche, Leopoldo Federico and Susana Rinal di, both as a musician and an arranger. In the same capacities he joined the orchestra of the famous maestro Osvaldo Pugliese in the late 1960s. From the early days of his career up until today he has done countless tours, both in Argentina and abroad. He also contributed to an impressive number of recordings by national and international orchestras, and played with well-known musicians like maestro Osvaldo Berlinghieri. As a composer Lisandro Adrover made music for many film scores and theatre productions. He also arranged and composed music for chamber and symphonic tango projects, one of them resulting in this album. Some of his own work has been recorded on albums such as Esencia y Despues, Buenos Aires 2004, and Tanguero. In 2004, Buenos Aires awarded him the freedom of the city for his cultural contributions and artistic achievements, both in his native Argentina and outside.
