About Us: 2nd Time Around Veteran Housing is a nonprofit organization (pending 501 (c) 3) that will provide permanent housing to Veterans and their immediate families throughout various communities within the Chicagoland and surrounding Suburban areas. Building the neighborhood out one home at a time will bring back viability and increased stability to the neighborhood. 2ndTAVH will purchase existing single family or 2-6 unit multifamily properties throughout various communities and revitalize them and tailor them to meet the basic needs of the Veteran and their family. The all open floor plan homes will maximize space, optimize safety of the Veteran and comply with ADA requirements. In providing a basic human necessity of shelter, we will promote independence, stability and pride in self and of the community that the Veteran will now be a member of. We will be the premier organization to combat veteran homelessness by providing all veterans with a permanent home that they can call their own.

About the CEOKaren Roberts, a 12 year (97-09) active duty Veteran with the Illinois Army National Guard (ILARNG) received her 2nd chance at a fresh start after surviving being shot in her neck, not in the war zone but in her own city of Chicago. She vowed that one day she would be a part of the change. While still working with the ILARNG, she returned to school to obtain her Nursing Assistant certificate. After making the tough decision to resign her position, she was accepted in the School of Nursing at St. Xavier University, where in December 2013 she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Her dream of providing permanent housing for Veterans became validated during her time while working on the Mental Health unit of Jesse Brown VA Hospital. Spending those short six months, felt like a life time of meeting and getting to know some wonderful individuals that made such a huge impact on her life. Many of them were in and out of the hospital quite frequently, just so they could have a place to sleep and receive a hot meal. Those patients made it clear to her that something needed to be done and she would be the one instrumental in doing so.
