THE EDENDALE EXPERIENCE: THINKING, LEARNING, CREATING

Principal’s Message Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei,

Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!

Thank you!

A very special ‘thank you’ goes to Hamish Stewart and

Karen Ward for their very generous donation of a gar-

den shed for our school orchard. Doesn’t it look great!

This is going to be really useful and we very much ap-

preciate your generosity! We are always looking for ad-

ditional helpers for the orchard so if you have a spare

moment, please give me a

call or email and I’ll pass

your details on to Karen.

We have had further in-

quiries from parents at

other schools wanting to

come and visit the orchard

having seen the ‘Garden of

Edendale’ Blog (access via the information page of our

website). It is great to be able to share our gardens at

Edendale with others!

Hui and Fono

Thank you so much to all the families who came along

last night to share thoughts and aspirations for their

children at school and for the future. We were delighted

to see many more families attending for both Hui and

Fono this year. It was very empowering to hear your

stories and feedback. We hope that you enjoyed hearing

about our stories too and also our hopes and dreams for

both our own children and grandchildren as well as for

yours! It was quite evident that we have a shared vision

for learning, education, happiness and a ‘good life’ for

everyone.

We look forward to meeting up again in November to

celebrate learning at Edendale in 2011.

Safety First Messages

1. Please ensure that you all take great care with chil-

dren crossing Sandringham and other busy local roads

at all times, not just before and after school! One of

our teachers (on her way home) has noticed parents

crossing Sandringham Rd at dusk, on a number of occa-

sions, dodging in between traffic and running over the

road with Edendale children, quite close to the St Lukes

Rd/Balmoral Rd intersection. There is a crossing at the

intersection, please use it! It is not worth risking your

own as well as your child’s life!

2. Two students from Balmoral Intermediate were hit by

a car while on the pedestrian crossing outside our school

last Friday. Thanks to the quick thinking of a trainee

teacher at Edendale (who was on the scene and noted

the registration and vehicle details), police were able to

follow up this accident with the driver, (who ran a red

light while in the bus lane and did not stop at the time).

Two things to remember here - A. red light running is

dangerous and we will report all vehicles that we are

able to indentify doing this. B. If you are a pedes-

trian, please do not race over the road at the last min-

ute. If you have a bike or scooter with you, you must

walk it across the road.

3. The KINZ carpark is neither a parking nor a turning

area for Edendale parents dropping off or picking up

children. Please DO NOT use it like this; it is becoming

very unsafe for KINZ children and their families as well

as Edendale students walking by. Our community con-

The Art Festival will take place 20-22 September. There will be an exhibition of stu-

dents’ art, a silent auction and three days of special events to celebrate visual art.

We are looking for artists who would like to visit our school, or “famous” locals who would be prepared to create a spe-

cial piece of artwork for our silent auction. If you would like to be involved in supporting our Art Festival celebrations

please contact Jackie Procter (Deputy Principal Y1-3) or leave a message with Zoe at the office.

The Art-a-thon is our major school fundraising event for 2011. We wish to raise money to purchase further equipment

in the areas of Visual Art, the ‘Food for Thought’ programme and Literacy. Our aim is to match the amount raised in

2010. Art-a-Thon packs, questions and sponsorship forms will be sent home on Friday 8 July. This will allow students

plenty of time over the holidays to collect sponsors and to research and learn the answers to the Art-a-Thon questions.

Students will be tested in Week 2 of Term 3 (Wednesday 10 August) and sponsorship money will need to be collected by

Week 6 (5-9 September).

Thank you for your support with this major fundraiser this year. Our students are looking forward to showing you some

of the amazing artwork they have completed this year.

BALMORAL SCHOOL

Next week we are holding an Open Evening and Open Day for Year 6 students and their parents who are inter-ested in Balmoral as a possible Intermediate for 2012.

The Open Evening will be held on Tuesday 5 July, begin-ning at 6:30pm. For those who are available to attend during the day we will be holding an Open Day the same week, Thursday 7 July, from 9:15am – 12:15pm.

On both occasions we will give parents an opportunity to see how things are done at Balmoral. We will also provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions so they can make an informed decision about which Inter-mediate to send their child to next year.

We certainly welcome all, and will be accepting some applications for out of zone enrolments. These are due no later than Tuesday 27 September and a ballot will be held if necessary, on Tuesday 4 October. The priority order for the ballot is:

1. Siblings of current students

2. Siblings of previous students

3. Children of former students

4. Children of staff / BoT members

5. General ballot
