Open Sundays After Worship

Maggie loves getting gifts, especially mysterious ones. One wintry day, she receives a package in the mail. She excitedly opens the package to find a bulb buried in a crate of dirt. She had hoped for a doll or a game, not a bulb that would one day become a plant. When spring comes, she finds the bulb in the cellar and tosses it into the garden, never to think of it again... until she walks outside on Easter morning and finds the most beautiful lily she has ever seen. Through the unique gift of a bulb, Maggie discovers the power of grace and forgiveness and the true meaning of Easter.

–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

After a brief hiatus from the #rethinkchurch social media Lenten series, I’d like to return.

I received this text last Sunday morning: “Today is the 5th Sunday of Lent. Look for places in need of a breath of restoration and resurrection.” What a perfect opportunity to reflect on the work we had just done in Mexico and the work we are called to in the future.

Resurrection is a difficult topic for some. It can seem mysterious and sometimes unbelievable, unless you have seen it. We can have long theological debates on the bodily resurrection of Jesus, however I wonder what would happen if we began to see resurrection in our everyday lives, began to experience restoration and new life first hand and become comfortable with the language? Okay, I’ll start…

Two weeks ago approximately 70 people from First Community Church traveled to Tecate, Mexico to build homes for five families. In total, 22 adults and 21 children received a home that was warm, dry and their very own.

The family I worked with was the Zacarias Perez family. Victor (27) and Carmela (24) make $75.00/week. They have two children, Orlin (7) and Victor (1), with a new baby girl hopefully delivered safely by now! Our group quickly fell in love with this delightful couple and their boys, working side by side each day to build not only walls but relationships. The day we handed over the keys to their new home we celebrated together. What joy was felt in that small mountain town that day.

The founder of Amor, Gayla Condon, writes in her book Disrupted, “when you enter someone else’s culture, it is for the purpose of developing a relationship where you learn from each other, both parties are transformed, and the kingdom of God grows.” None of us came away from our experience with this beautiful family the same. The relationships we built far surpassed the structure we constructed; the hope of a new life and a brighter day was formed, the winds of restoration blew over us daily…resurrection. This, my dear ones, is what resurrection looks like.

My challenge for you is to find the glimpses of resurrection in your life and community. Where does restoration need to happen and what are you waiting for? Post a picture on social media or email it to me at [email protected] using the hashtag #rethinkchurch and #resurrection. I look forward to your images of the kingdom.

A child enrolled for Kindergarten will experience a full day program from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm that balances experience in nature, play and intellectual growth that comes from intentional activities planned by caring and experienced teachers.

The child will thrive in the small group setting of 12 children. They will participate in monthly field trips that have a nature focus and weekly enrichment experiences with computer, music or physical fitness.

Children are welcome to enroll if they turn 5 by September 30. There are also extended day options from 7 am - 6 pm.

Our kindergarten children typically graduate and move on to first grade success in all surrounding districts.
