As part of this work, the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF) has really stepped up its fundraising and has provided significant grants to all SMMUSD elementary schools. While ours is a generous community and we make many sacrifices for our children, we are also a community of modest means. We’re fortunate to have a Title I grant from the federal government that has helped us provide additional support for striving students. But on our own, we weren’t able raise enough money to provide the same kinds of things that some other schools were able to offer. We have worked so hard to support SMMEF because we have benefitted enormously from this new partnership. With SMMEF taking responsibility for STAFF, we now have seven bilingual instructional assistants, a full-time literacy coach, much more funding for professional development, and our PS Arts Theater and K-2 Spanish music programs no longer need to be supported by the PTA. The Edison PTA still provides important support (extra supplies for teachers, our KidBiz program, field trips, assemblies, library books, etc.) -- but the burden is much less than in the past. Nearly 32% of Edison families (107 families) have now made a direct donation to SMMEF. Our PTA also gives SMMEF 20% of the profit from all fundraisers we hold at Edison. So supporting the PTA is also supporting SMMEF. We are in the home stretch, but there is more work to do so that both SMMEF and the Edison PTA can assure that these programs are back again next year. Won’t you please join in this effort by any or all of the following: o If you haven’t yet made a direct donation to SMMEF and the Edison PTA (in any amount), please do so now. Please give to both in whatever amount you can afford. Every dollar helps! o Purchase tickets for the SMMEF second annual private Pier Party at Pacific Park on Sunday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. You can buy tickets at http://smmef.org/?/pierparty for $25.00 for a wristband with unlimited rides. Other pricing options are available too. Get your tickets soon – the party sold out last year! o Come to the Edison screening of Whitewater on May 16 th at the Arrow Theater in Santa Monica. Tickets are $5.00 per person with all proceeds going to SMMEF. Watch for more information! We’re nearing the end of the first year of an ambitious plan to make sure all our SMMUSD schools have access to the kinds of staffing, professional development, and enrichment programs that help all students succeed. ANUNCIOS

Dear Edison Families of Students in Kindergarten Through Grade 4: If you are planning to have your child or children continue to attend Edison next year, please fill out and return the form below by next Friday, April 18th. That may sound like a lot of time, but it’s actually only the Friday after we return from Spring Break. Getting an accurate count of projected enrollment for next year affects the number of teachers that SMMUSD authorizes for our school and the way that we configure classes (i.e., how many classes we need and at what grades). So your response helps us make the best plans for our students. I appreciate your candor and will treat your response as confidential in case you have not yet told your child about an upcoming move. For families who reside within the SMMUSD, returning the attachment below is enough for your child to continue at Edison. You do not need to renew an intra-district permit if you live outside the immediate Edison neighborhood. When you enrolled at Edison, we became your home school. For families who do not live in the SMMUSD and whose child/children are attending Edison with an interdistrict attendance permit, there are April 18. Second, you do not need to reapply for an interdistrict permit through your home district, but you must return a Verification of Continuing Enrollment to SMMUSD. These forms have already been sent to families with children attending on permit and are due to SMMUSD by June 1, 2015. If you have misplaced the form, you can get another on the district website (www.smmusd.org) . Go to Quick Links, Permits and then print, sign and return. If you do not have access to the Internet, our community liaison Yoly Gutierrez can help you (310) 828-0335, ext. 61-307. If you are enrolling a sibling in Kindergarten and live outside of SMMUSD or if you used to reside in SMMUSD but have moved outside the district, you will have to apply to your district of residence for an exit permit and fill out a permit application with SMMUSD. If you have questions, please see Yoly. Please let us know if you are planning for your child(ren) to continue at Edison next year or if you’re planning a change of schools. Complete and return this form to your child’s teacher by April 18. If you have more than one child at Edison, use a different form for each child. Thank you. Lori S. Orum, Principal

Segundo, ustedes no necesitan volver a

Registración Continua a SMMUSD.

Vayan a “Quick Links”,

Permits y después impriman, firmen y entréguenlas. Si no tienen acceso a internet, nuestra comunitaria bilingüe

Gracias.

Edison Language Academy

presents a special screening of

White Water a film about race, hope and endurance.

Where: Aero Theater 1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403 When: Saturday, May 16, 2015 @ 2 pm Suggested donation: $5 per person*

White Water is the story of a 7 year-old black kid in segregated 1963 Opelika, Alabama who becomes

obsessed with the desire to taste the water from the "white's only"

drinking fountain and sets out on a quest to do the unthinkable: drink from it.

The tale is written in such a humorous fashion that one can easily forget – except for certain scenes – about what was really taking

place during that time comparative to the acclaimed movie ‘Selma’.

~Larry Buford, movie critic

*All proceeds to benefit the Santa Monica Education Foundation.

A very special thanks to
