PRETTY IS AS PRETTY DOES

This month, the young ladies of St. Agnes Academy describe to us how they turned the tragic loss of a schoolmate into a positive means for outreach (pg. 24). “Anna’s Closet” is an endowment program that allows young ladies to give something significant without breaking into their college fund: a gently-used dress for another young lady that has difficulty affording one. Simple. And yet significant.

Leesa, the writer of the piece, was worried that some of her rhetoric read as too superficial. Is being pretty really that important? While I can understand that to some the idea of affording a dress doesn’t solve our world’s issues, it does allow an individual with troubles to worry about one less thing. It addresses an issue that is overlooked, and solves a real problem that would otherwise cause anxiety.

The act of “giving” doesn’t have to translate into donating thousands of dollars. Many organizations’ needs can be simple. Southern Reins (pg. 35) needs three volunteers for each student in their programing. Alpha Omega Veterans Services (alphaomegaveterans.org) has roughly 105 veterans in housing, and they could always use a home-cooked meal or even a potted plant for their rooms. Friends of the Memphis Animal Shelter sees an exponential increase in adoption when Facebook users simply repost the status updates. Saving up to seven human lives is as simple as being an organ donor (organdonor.gov).

Giving simply still makes someone a hero. For a teenager, giving a dress is an easy way to acknowledge and appreciate something afforded to her. It also sets the wheel of giving back in motion. Sometimes, I fear, folks may forget that social media was designed to increase human connectivity, not pull us away from connecting to each other in a real way. There is no better way to connect with someone than to help them meet a simple need. That was the idea of 4Memphis’ former #MemphisLoveChallenge campaign. That is our continued focus for our Youth Impact features.

Clothing designer (and daughter of Paul McCartney) Stella McCartney has famously said, “Everyone can do simple things to make a difference, and every little bit really does count.” Stella would very much understand the impact of allowing a less-fortunate young lady the opportunity to wear something that made her feel special on a big occasion like prom. So with the new beginnings and growth that spring signifies, challenge yourself to cultivate into a more giving person; it’s easier than you think.

�ere is no month more Memphis than May, and “Making Music,” �ts right in. �e 3’ x 4’ oil on canvas, painted to celebrate the excitement of Memphis in May especially the music, is consumed with rhythm, featuring lines like strings on instruments. �e center is the stage with the curtain pulled back for the show to begin, and at the bottom of the stage, one can see the lights ready to shine on the performer. �e entire painting is saying, “Let’s make the music!”

We define our lives by our actions- pursuing, changing, creating, helping. For Anna Menkel, the act was simple. It was to provide a dress to a timid underclassman. Little did she realize

that one orange dress would unwittingly change the lives of hundreds of girls city-wide. One dress would provide women across the city of Memphis with confidence and liberation. One dress would raise thousands of dollars for a scholarship and a local charity. One dress would transform an entire city.

It was a week prior to the big high school dance, and one shy underclassman was still struggling to find her dress. How could she possibly attend the dance? When Anna found her crying in the girls’ bathroom, she acted unselfishly to provide the perfect solution- a brilliant orange dress from her own closet. Following the dance, when the young girl attempted to return the designer dress, Anna simply responded, “No. You keep it. It looks good on you!” Anna’s generous choice made the young girl feel pretty and confident enough to attend the dance, but it also exhibited a rare form of selflessness. Indeed, Anna’s altruism, though seemingly trivial, both empowered the underclassman, and also sparked a major movement in the Memphis community.

In 2005, Anna was tragically killed in a car accident. After hearing the story of her daughter’s amazing generosity, Anna’s mother channeled her grief into action by seeking a way to honor her daughter’s memory. In doing so, Mrs. Menkel found a way to contribute to the city of Memphis as well. She met with Anna’s high school counselor, Maria Smith, and the two women decided to honor Anna by establishing the philanthropic club “Anna’s Closet.” At first, the club consisted of a small committee that held a $10 dress sale solely for the members of St. Agnes Academy. The money raised and the remaining dresses given by faculty and students were donated to the Emmanuel Center in Downtown Memphis, an organization that empowers at-risk youth and adults through Christian ministry so that they are elevated out of poverty and become productive citizens.

In just two short years, Mrs. Menkel’s amazing organization and Anna’s inspiring story had spread throughout the city.

Soon, various schools and local businesses began to donate dresses, coupons, or money to the cause. At this point, the original $10 dress sale was opened to everyone. Mrs. Menkel remembers the “the happiness of the girls, city-wide, that were able to purchase such beautiful dresses for only $10.” Today, the Anna’s Closet committee at St. Agnes Academy has evolved into a charitable organization that donates all dresses and funds to the Emmanuel Center. Inspired by Anna’s generosity, Mrs. Menkel both “spread the pretty” and found a way to “keep the memory of Anna alive.”

Clothes often do make the impression, make the moment, make the woman… especially the right dress. However, a dress is not just a random piece of fabric; a dress is something more. A dress can be a subtle statement or a symbol of human empowerment. In the right dress, a girl can find more than a Cinderella moment. Yet some young women in the Memphis area do not have the means to acquire new dresses and “spread the pretty,” as Mrs. Menkel calls it. Like the timid underclassman, many do not feel confident enough to attend a special event without the proper attire. However, in the right dress, a person can be transformed. Anna’s Closet provides the “pretty” to Memphis by making dresses available to everyone for a minimum cost. The Emmanuel Center, in particular, has benefitted by receiving thousands of free dresses so that its members could enjoy their prom or graduation. Mrs. Menkel feels that, “Being able to dress someone for a very important event in her life makes it so worthwhile.” So many people have attended the sale with the generous spirit of Anna at heart. In addition, the Anna Caroline Menkel scholarship fund has been established to benefit one upper school student of St. Agnes Academy. Who knew one orange dress could impact so many lives?

When she so graciously offered her dress, Anna could not possibly have figured the tremendous impact her act would have. But now, one simple gesture has truly changed the entire community of Memphis. Though the significance of clothing is often disregarded, Anna’s Closet demonstrates the impact of one dress. Through one dress, Anna and Mrs. Menkel started a revolution. They provided everyone with the opportunity to be transformed through the power of clothing. People have been inspired, filled with joy, and have continued to “spread the pretty.” All it took was the spirit of generosity and one dress.

BEACH SEASON IS RIGHT AROUNDTHE CORNER. ARE YOU READY?

In July of 2015, a group of women motivated by a passion for serving others started a program that is unique in Memphis in their approach to helping people with disabilities. Kirby Dobbs, Courtney Smith, and Bridget Trenary came together to provide a service in the area that many thought improbable. These friends discovered that collectively they have a rare ability to provide therapy through horseback riding and equestrian training, and they have been off and running ever since.

Horse-themed therapy is not an idea exclusive to Southern Reins; hippotherapy (physical, occupational or speech and language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement) programming has been employed in Europe, Canada and the US since the 1960s. The movement of the horse is the strategy that a therapist uses to improve a patient’s nerve and muscular function. The American Hippotherapy Association has case study after case study of documented medical success stories where equestrian therapy helped individuals with disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, Down syndrome, emotional disorders, hearing impairment, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular

Dystrophy, paralysis, scoliosis, Spinal Bifida and traumatic brain injuries.

“The power of a horse can bring out so much beauty in everyone,” says Jill Haag, Executive Director of Southern Reins. “I knew at an early age that horses were magical.” Jill started riding when she was six years old. “What horses can do for a person with a disability is truly amazing, and providing an opportunity where disability disappears is the greatest job in the world!” Having grown up on a horse farm, Jill learned responsibility at a young age, and she believes that many of Southern Reins’ clientele receives that same

benefit. It was also in taking care of horses in her youth that taught Jill non-verbal communication: ears, head jerking, and breathing patterns are just a few ways in which the horses can “talk.” And to a client with autism or verbal disability, this communication with a horse may provide an easier method for connection; as Jill says, “Horses don’t see a disability.” They take non-verbal commands, and they give non-verbal communication in exchange.

Southern Reins is located in Nesbit, MS, at Panther Creek Ranch, the otherwise private ranch of Chair Kirby Dobbs. Kirby is also very involved with the Palmer Home for Children, and those children in need are a few of the pupils riding at the ranch. Jill employs her knowledge of horses along with Head Instructor Sara Bryant’s ability to teach in order to create a supportive riding experience that has decades of experience backing it. Ginna Rauls, Southern Reins Volunteer and Community Director, is tasked with finding both the perfect candidates and the perfect volunteers. In fact, there is a need for three volunteers to one rider, and Southern Reins will always graciously accept volunteers with both equestrian experience and no experience alike.

Parker is a rider at Southern Reins. He is diagnosed with autism, and has in the past had some aggression issues. However, from the moment he walked into the door at Southern Reins, he has shown no hostility. The staff and volunteers only see a joyful Parker. When Parker is riding weekly, it transforms his behavior in and out of the ring. He gets to visit his “treasure box” at school for good behavior, something he was never allowed to do before his riding. He is a true success story, and his mother will happily testify. “Parker bonded with his horse ‘Chief’ immediately, saying, ‘Chief and I are bros. We tell each other our secrets.’ This translates into, ‘I have a friend.’ At bedtime, he asks if Chief is sleeping and how many moons until he will get to see him again. Parker has found a friend at Southern Reins.”

Horseback riding at Southern Reins is not exclusive to those with deep pockets. They provide a scholarship fund, where a donor can actually sponsor a rider. Southern Reins recently partnered with SRVS, a non-profit agency that provides servicing and programing to people with disabilities. Participants will start by learning about horsemanship, and once they start feeling comfortable, will get to ride in the ring. Every participant at Southern Reins is evaluated and monitored, providing a safe and custom-made experience.

Like many new outreach and non-profit organizations, one of their biggest obstacles is awareness. “Seventy three percent of our budget is our programming (horses and their upkeep are not cheap!), and it’s important for people to know who we are and what we do so they want to get involved.” Luckily, Southern Reins Board Chair Kirby Dobbs knows how to throw a fantastic party. Southern Reins is having their first-annual fundraiser, hosted by Kirby and her committee, on Kentucky Derby day (May 7th), from 3-7:30 at 440 South Shady Grove. Aptly named “Jockeys & Juleps,” the event promises big hats, bourbon and bluegrass, along with a live viewing of the big race. Already, 600 guests have committed to attending, and there is room for another 300! All proceeds go back to Southern Reins and their programming, and that is enough reason to saddle up and mosey over.

By next year, Southern Reins is hoping to be able to take as many as 200 riders per week. “This is not just a pony ride. We are actually changing lives. This community has great resources for people with disabilities, and we hope to be added to that list.” Southern Reins is in the process of forming partnerships with physical and speech therapists to further aid the Memphis community. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water together, stirring to ensure that the sugar is completely moistened. Put over medium heat and cook, without stirring, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is clear. Turn off the heat and add a bundle of the thyme sprigs (about 8-10) tied together with kitchen twine. Allow the mixture to steep for at least 1 hour or until cool. Remove thyme and set the simple syrup aside. This can be made in advance and kept in an airtight container for up to one month, refrigerated. In the bottom of a Boston shaker, add the strawberries, the leaves from 3-5 sprigs of thyme, and 1 ounces of the prepared simple syrup. You can add more or less of the syrup depending on the natural sweetness of the berries. Muddle the mixture thoroughly until the strawberries release their juices and are smashed. Pour in the gin, St. Germain, and rose water. Add ice and shake until cold and blended. In a rocks glass, fill with to the top with ice. Divide the mixture evenly between the two glasses; top with club soda. Stir gently to combine and finish with a twist of lime and maybe some cute sandwiches!

Next, remove the mint leaves and place on a cotton cloth and wring over a bowl, bruising the leaves. Dip the leaves back into the Sazerac and wring it out again. Repeat this process and set extract aside for 1 hour (you can leave leaves in extract for extra flavor). Heat water and add sugar, making a simple syrup. Combine the syrup and mint extract in a covered glass and refrigerate overnight. Fill glasses with crushed ice and add extra ounce of Sazerac. Add marinated julep mixture and add mint for garnish.

“The hogs themselves have diplomatic immunity. Each one has their own set of papers for which to cross the border,” says

Shawn Danko, describing the Canadian hogs his team cooks for the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. “Without those papers, they would never make it to Memphis.” Canada is this year’s honored country, and for Shawn and his Team Canada BBQ, this is an extraspecial opportunity during the month-long celebration.

Canada is homeland for the well-known restaurateur who has called Memphis home since 2000. He transferred to manage the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street, and the day he arrived from Quebec, he was welcomed to his new city with a record temp of 107 degrees. “I like warm weather so I loved it!” He has embraced the weather and Southern food culture, and since 2005 he has been sharing his native Canadian cuisine blended with Southern influences at his popular eatery, Kooky Canuck.

Shawn saw numerous similarities between Southern and Canadian foods, mostly the “heartiness” of what Southerners and Canadians enjoy. The menu options at Kooky Canuck definitely have a Canadian influence, and it is the only restaurant offering a Canadian-American infusion. For instance, the Poutine is what Shawn describes as classic Canadian: freshly cut French fries are topped with cheddar cheese curds, and a special poutine (brown) gravy is ladled over the potatoes and cheese. Gravy seems to bond us all, whether in the southern United States or the backwoods of Quebec. They also make their own Canadian bacon in-house, “because Americans love Canadian

bacon, which Canadians call ‘back bacon,’” he explained.

Kooky Canuck and Shawn often serve as a welcome wagon for visiting Canadians. During the annual Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, Canadians blues acts are hosted with an afternoon jam session at the downtown location, and this year’s Memphis in May is particularly exciting time to host visitors from our northern neighbors. “Here we are presented with a unique opportunity for me as a Canadian in Memphis, Tennessee, in the heart of the South. What a great honor that Canada should be the chosen country, for the second time in fact,” Shawn said, “and to be able to showcase the country from which I came to so many people here in the South, is just an amazing, amazing opportunity.”

The month-long festival boasts a calendar of events that includes a photography exhibit at the Tvesco Building downtown, an

ice skating exhibit at the Central Library on loan from the Canadian Museum of History, and the Jewish Community Center is showcasing the contributions of the Canadian Jewish community; and that is just a small sampling that includes film screenings, lectures, and performances in addition to the signature events such the barbecue competition. Shawn also notes the business component of Memphis in May, and mentions Canadian businesses that operate locally including Kruger Products and the Canadian National Railway, both of which are very important to the Memphis economy and further strengthen the connection to the 2016 honored country.

In 2013, Shawn and Team Canada BBQ were mandated by Counsel General of Canada to cook for Canadian dignitaries

visiting the Memphis in May Barbecue, and have done so each year since then, cooking up the Canadian hogs with diplomatic immunity. “By partnering with the Counsel General, we are the only team to bring hogs from outside of America.” This gives the team an exclusive chance to showcase a Canadian product from Willowgrove Hill Farm in Ontario this far south, which is rare. In the spirit of the pork-cooking-contest, “The hogs are unique to the Memphis competition and most judges haven’t seen it; it gives us a bit of an edge, we believe, when we cook.”

Shawn proudly honors his native Canada everyday by dishing up some of the food culture to locals, but this May will be an extraordinary one. “This gives me the opportunity to help our friends here in Memphis learn more about Canada, and what a great country it is.”

LOFLIN YARD GRAND OPENING

Loflin Yard is downtowns newest restaurant, bar, and backyard-style gathering spot. The ultimate in urban repurposing, the main building was the Loflin Safe and Lock Co., the chairs are old school desks from CBU, and the tin-covered wooden deck area was a barn that housed Peabody Hotel carriage horses. Loflin Yard is located at 7 West Carolina Avenue on the Southern fringe of the South Main district.

This month we celebrate Mother’s Day (it’s on May 8th in case you forgot). Many couples have challenging issues related to mothers or mothers in law. Here are three mistakes you might be making when it comes to your marriage and your mother.

1. Defending your mom. You love your mom and that’s great, but defensiveness causes you to overlook

your spouse’s concern or complaint making he or she feel disconnected and resentful.

2. Avoiding the boundaries discussion. Marriage means redefining all the other relationships in your life, including mom. Boundaries create the optimal conditions for healthy relationship for everyone, they do not have to be negative.

3. Sharing important news. It’s natural. Mom is your biggest fan. Mom should definitely be high on the list for important news, however, make sure your spouse is in the know first. Honoring your marriage first is always in line with honoring mom!
