A s the exhibit comes to an end, the 58 th Annual AGP Member’s Show may not make the history books but I can tell you one thing, the caliber of art at this show has risen to a new level. I would not like to have been in the jurors’ shoes trying to decide on awards this year, they surely had their work cut out for them. Each year four artists are given Exhibition Awards and will have their work shown in the main gallery at next year’s annual members exhibition. The jurors also select a number of pieces for a Merit Award, and if I found them all and counted right, this year there were seven Awards of Merits presented to AGP artists. So let us begin with the Exhibition Awards. This well deserved honor was given to Jenny Kahn for her very pleasingly nostalgic photographic composition, “Black & White Photograph: New Orleans 1957”. I am in love with the fantastic color palette and the way the lines meet together in our next exhibition award winner’s entry, Deborah Corsini, who presents us with a beautiful tapestry piece titled “Spring Romance”. Having been a fan of Denny Hollands ocean paintings for so long you can only imagine how excited I was to see his entry for this exhibit. I have always loved aerial photography and this piece especially resonates with me, congratulations Denny on your Exhibition Award for your work titled, “Above the Heartland”. And finally, but certainly not last in the least, a classic solar plate etching by Julie Stock titled “Through the Storm”. I am drawn to the beautiful tones and the feeling of movement that Julie was able to capture in this piece, it is easy to see why the juror felt it was deserving of the award of excellence! This brings us to the Awards of Merit. There were so many remarkable pieces in the show and it would be a daunting quest to try and pick the pieces

As the exhibitcomes to anend, the 58th

Annual AGPMember’s Showmay not make thehistory books but Ican tell you onething, the caliber ofart at this show hasrisen to a new level.I would not like tohave been in thejurors’ shoes tryingto decide on awardsthis year, they surely

had their work cut out for them. Each year four artistsare given Exhibition Awards and will have their workshown in the main gallery at next year’s annualmembers exhibition. The jurors also select a numberof pieces for a Merit Award, and if I found them alland counted right, this year there were seven Awardsof Merits presented to AGP artists. So let us begin

with the ExhibitionAwards.

This welldeserved honor wasgiven to Jenny Kahnfor her verypleasingly nostalgicphotographiccomposition, “Black& WhitePhotograph: NewOrleans 1957”. I am in love withthe fantastic colorpalette and the waythe lines meet

together in ournext exhibitionaward winner’sentry, DeborahCorsini, whopresents us with abeautiful tapestrypiece titled“SpringRomance”. Having been afan of DennyHollands oceanpaintings for solong you can onlyimagine howexcited I was to see his entry for this exhibit. I havealways loved aerial photography and this pieceespecially resonates with me, congratulations Dennyon your Exhibition Award for your work titled,“Above the Heartland”. for these awards. Probably one of my favorites works in this show isa hauntingly beautifulpiece by Laura Green, titled “Sacred Mirror”.This mixed mediapiece begs the viewerto want to know moreabout the images itcontains but maybewe aren’t supposed toknow, maybe it is toosacred. Another piece thatis close to my heart isCharlotte Seekamp’sinstallation offourteen framed digital prints, all of which representmy favorite types of photography where the artistscaptures the banal everyday silliness of us humanbeings. Charlottes piece is titled, “They’re Just Giving

It Away”. Next, awonderfullysimplistic coloredpencil work by artistRichard Taylor whopresents us with atimeless, sentimentalportrait of a childand dog titled“Keesa and Maya”. Ihope we will beseeing more ofRichards work in thenear future.

Emily Holland “Flyover Country”

Khalid Rasool “Market Street, San Francisco”

Cheryl Coon “Untitled”

I quickly became afan of Kahlid Rasool’swork when I first sawone of his paintings inthe West Gallery ofSanchez several showsago. It seems he hasbeen producing winnersever since and this oil oncanvas piece titled“Market Street, SanFrancisco” is noexception. Two pieces found in the East Gallery are a mustsee when you visit the Members Exhibition, first a

stunning stained glass piece titled“Coral Reef” by artist MarilynBrandt and at the far end of theGallery you will find amesmerizing“Untitled”ceramicwork of artby CherylCoon, bothare so verywell-deservedAward of

Merit winners. The final Merit Awardwinner belongs to none otherthan artist Emily Holland, who I had the privilege ofhanging her show recently at the Mildred OwenConcert Hall. Emily’s other worldly piece is titled“Flyover Country”. I am very impressed at her talentand success of her subject matter.

The next fourartist didn’twin anyawards butthere were somanyexceptionalentries in theshow I felt Ishouldshowcase a

few more.One of my

favoritephotographers,Debbie Cainoffers us alovely capturedlandscape titled“Less is More”.An excellentimage that

leaves me wanting more! A familiar face around the Sanchez Art Center isthat of legendaryartist Alan Firestone.Alan chose for thisshow an oil on panelpiece titled“Carousels ofMemory”. The pieceshows a verypleasing bold blueouter section that isquite striking, butit’s the inner circular

objects that reallycaptures my attention. Another one of myfavorite artists CynthiaRettig. has her entry as afocal point of the far endof the West Gallery and ifyou didn’t know better, you would think youwere stepping into a veryfamiliar but somewhatunsettling living area. Herinstallation is titled“Family” must be seen in

person for the full effect. And I’ll close with an artist who I have admiredsince the days ofthe Oceana ArtGallery, MehranGhaffari, whosebrilliant ceramicpiece is perfectlytitled “Listen”.

The four Exhibition Awardwinners selected in 2015 byartist and Skyline Collegeinstructor Jody Keane areexhibiting in the Main Gallerythis year. The winners areCharles Dennis McDevitt,Wendy Thieler, Nancy MonaRussell, and Joel C. Fontaine.Charles McDevitt’s paintingsare someof myfavorite

amongst all the Sanchez Artists. His realistic style and the way hecaptures simple everyday objectsand vehicles, including firetrucks, has always astonishedand amazed me.

Nancy Russell’s artworkhas always been aninspiration to me and I amsure to many others. I amalways excited to see whatshe enters at each show andmore than anything else Iam glad to call her myfriend.

And finally Joel Fontaine, whatcan I saw about an artist whosework is so unbelievably intricateand complex, just gaze deeplyinto any one of his pieces andmaybe it’s just me but I findmyself wondering if it is reallyhumanly possible to createsomething so elaboratelybeautiful. M.Risenhoover

the AGP Gallery store! Sanchez west gallery foyer

As an artist, I know that I am always thinking ofways to show my art. One thing I do know isthat getting smaller versions of your art out

there works. People enjoy greeting cards, postcardsand matted prints or photographs; sometimes they areunable to afford the framed piece or painting hangingon the wall. This is when our gallery store enters in tothe scene; it allows the artist an opportunity to sell. Itis also great for artists who make jewelry and smallsculptures. Two years ago at Open Walls, we decided to havea gift shop and last year we expanded that to the OpenWalls Gallery Store. Now, we have the Gallery Store

open year round following our Art Guild membershows. They all proved to be successful. Featuringthree artistseach show, Iwould like toput a call outto the artists togive you theopportunity toopen your artto a largeraudience. Ifyou areinterestedplease let meknow, even ifit is for futureshows. Each ofthe artists to put their work on display has sold items.Would you like to be one of them?
