90% of companies face external cyber threats

On the eve of the release of its new corporate security solution, Kaspersky Lab has presented the results of its survey “Cyber Threats and Corporate IT Security: GCC and Global Trends”.

According to the survey, nine out of ten companies have encountered at least one cyber threat in the past year. This was reported by 88% of all respondents in GCC, and 91% globally. Worldwide, one in three of these companies suffered data loss through these incidents, including data vital to business operations. In GCC, 40% of the companies lost data. At the same time, almost half of all respondents think that the number of cyber threats has been increasing (48% globally and 44% in GCC), while only 8% feel that the number has decreased. Companies most often encounter viruses, worms and malicious software, spam, phishing and hacking attacks.

Tarek Kuzbari, Kaspersky Lab’s Managing Director for the Middle East, said: “This is the first time Kaspersky Lab has conducted

such a wide-reaching survey prior to releasing new corporate solutions. The survey results show that the technologies and features implemented in our new Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 will help effectively tackle the security problems commonly encountered by IT managers. From conducting polls to implementing specific protection mechanisms, all our efforts to develop new solutions for this release have enabled us to provide ‘pro-active protection’ with which to counter both existing and future cyber threats.”

IT security is most commonly implemented by using antivirus software and client firewalls, installing updates – including those that remove vulnerabilities in existing software – and backing up data. More than half the respondents (55% in GCC and 59% globally) are confident that their corporate networks are securely protected. However, the survey shows that only 28% of all GCC companies (and 36% of companies globally) employ all of the standard

security methods mentioned; 3% of companies worldwide have no measures in place to protect them from cyber threats (in GCC luckily there are no such companies).

In an attempt to improve corporate IT security, companies often impose sweeping measures which can damage their business effectiveness. Thus, 62% of GCC companies (and 72% of companies globally) block or restrict employee access to social networking sites and applications.

One serious problem discovered by the survey is underinvestment in IT security. However, the situation in the GCC region is better than worldwide: 65% of GCC companies consider their IT security investments adequate, whereas globally the figure is 55%. In the respondents’ opinion, lack of funds is only part of the problem: 61% of respondents in GCC (70% throughout the world) complain of understaffing, lack of expertise or insufficient system resources.

Cyberoam launches NetGenie wireless routers

World’s only high-speed waterless inkjet

Network security provider Cyberoam has launched NetGenie wireless routers with in-built security features. The products address the frequent concerns that both parents and SOHO owners have regarding internet usage.

NetGenie appliances offer age-wise, easy parental controls that enable parents to ensure that children are protected from harmful internet content, while SOHO users can regulate internet usage to gain higher productivity and security.  NetGenie’s age-wise parental controls simplifies internet controls to a single click and provides a simple and safe end-user experience that mitigates the dangers of age-inappropriate content, hackers and cyber-bullying. Small offices will gain from NetGenie’s SOHO Unified Threat Management and is the first WiFi router that comes pre-configured with Internet access controls and endpoint security including a firewall, VPN, inbuilt anti-virus and intrusion prevention.

Speaking at the launch, Pradeesh VS, regional sales manager, Middle East, stated: “The Middle East markets are gaining higher internet penetration levels. This environment is extremely conducive to the launch of Cyberoam’s NetGenie range of WiFi routers that are aimed at the home and SOHO markets. We expect to have a positive response to the launch and are extremely confident that our participation at GITEX will pave the way for our growth. This platform will be used effectively to showcase our innovations, discuss trends and build on our channel and consumer relations.”  NetGenie’s in-built parental controls through the WiFi router is designed to deal with the increasing use of personal internet devices such as laptops, iPads and smartphones and alleviates the need to install filtering software on each device. Parents can feel confident that their children are accessing the internet safely, regardless of where they are using the

internet without physically invading on their privacy. The router comes with pre-categorised age-wise lists of appropriate websites, avoiding the need for parents to manually enter these sites. Importantly, NetGenie helps parents create a healthy home routine by being able to schedule website usage according to content during different days of the week and thereby manage and control the children’s daily activities.

The Xerox CiPress 500 Production Inkjet System is the world’s only high-speed waterless inkjet device. The supercharged system has earned high praise from a test customer, who calls it a “revolutionary, industry-changing solution”.

Printing 500 feet or 2,180 full-color pages per minute, the twin-engine device from Xerox efficiently creates personalised marketing and other items.

The inkjet system was tested by dmh Marketing Partners, a direct-mail company that creates more than 800 million pieces annually. By using the Xerox CiPress 500, dmh achieved consistent quality from page to page, spending less time on recalibrating

the printing press and more time maximising profitable revenue opportunities.

“We are constantly looking for cutting-edge technology to drive the manufacturing process and we believe the CiPress 500 is the best technology for high-volume production,” said Randy Seberg, dmh’s CTO.

Building from its patented solid ink technology, Xerox CiPress 500 enables printing on low-cost, plain paper without ink soaking through. This - together with self-monitoring and auto-correcting production controls - results in a workhorse device reliable enough to print tens of millions of pages every month.

“The predictability and consistency is very high - the first sheet looks the

same as sheet 500,000, which I could never say of an offset press,” added Seberg.

Printers can be even more productive and efficient with Xerox’s IntegratedPlus - a new program that takes advantage of the open standards platform of Xerox FreeFlow Print Server and various industry-leading partner software solutions.

The list price is $3.8m for the base twin-engine duplex. It will be available in the Middle East region in Q2 2012.

ADEC goes borderless Cisco today announced that the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has chosen Cisco Borderless Network solution with the aim to increase productivity and enrich the learning environment with advanced technology across ADEC schools by the end of this year.

“We aim to provide schools with end-to-end support for IT issues so that they can focus on education, learning and teaching”, commented Mohammed Younes, ICT division manager ADEC at a press conference held at GITEX.

The decision is a milestone in the development of ADEC’s technology infrastructure - nearly 270 schools will now be connected across the Emirate. Etisalat and Cisco Advanced services were selected as lead system integrators.

Designed to connect all ADEC schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia, the Cisco architecture will provide highly secure and reliable access to critical information that will enable students to become world-class learners able to fully participate in a sustainable, knowledge-based society, according to the company. Formerly most of the schools were connected to each other and many offered to Internet access.

Wayne Hull, director and general manager for Cisco UAE commented: Cisco’s vision is to play a major role in connecting the nation and helping to transform education not only in Abu Dhabi but also throughout the UAE by making our solutions relevant to the needs of 21st century learners, educators and organisations.”

The new infrastructure will also allow ADEC students and staff to connect with each other, share folders and devices regardless of their location.

ADEC’s data centre features the Cisco Nexus 7000, Cisco Unified Computing System, Cisco IronPorts security. The network infrastructure in each school includes a WAN router, core and access switches, wireless LAN and Internet connectivity.
