CHARACTERIZATION OF A A CMOS TWO-STAGE OPAMP

In this appendix, a fully analytic characterization of a CMOS operational amplifier is presented. First, a fairly complete list of characteristics for any operational amplifier is given. These characteristics are then derived for a CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp. This results in an analytic model, which is used for automatically sizing the opamp in our analog design methodology. Finally, the numerical results for a typical CMOS two-stage opamp design are summarized.

A.2. Analytic model for a CMOS two-staa:e opamp

Most of the above characteristics are now presented in analytic form for the CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp of Fig. A.I. This opamp schematic has been selected here because it is a simple circuit which clearly illustrates the idea of an analytic model to the reader, and because of the availability of integrated samples [SAN_88b]. The analytic equations below fully characterize the opamp and can thus be used to automatically design the amplifier. Since all characteristics are inherent to this particular circuit topology, they form the analytic topology model of the circuit. For easing the automatic sizing, the designer can add additional constraints or rules (which are often specific for the given design specifications or targets), resulting in the analytic design model. OPTIMAN [GIE_89a, GIE_90b] then optimizes the circuit performance based on the resulting analytic model.

The characteristics of the CMOS two-stage opamp of Fig. A.I are now summarized below.

ApPENDIX A. CHARACfERIZATION OF A CMOS lWO-STAGE OPAMP 263

A.2.1. DC characteristics

A.2.1.1. Common-mode input voltage ranfJe versus supply voltage

The common-mode input voltage range is limited when some transistor goes out of saturation. For the positive swing, this occurs when M5 goes out of saturation:

(AI)

For the negative swing, this occurs when MIA goes out of saturation:

Vin,min = vss + VGS2A + VDSAT1A - VGS1A (A2)

A.2.1.2. Output voltage range versus supply voltage

The output voltage range is limited when one of the output transistors is driven out of saturation, but it is also limited by the finite current available to drive the load. For the positive swing, this yields:

(A3)

For the negative swing, the output is limited at :

Vout,min = vss + VDSAT3 (A.4)

A.2.1.3. Maximum output current (sink and source)

The maximum source output current is 1SDurce = 1 4, when M3 is cut off. The maximum sink output current is reached when node I drives M2B out of saturation:

1sink = O. 5 ~3 (Vin+ + VGS1B - VDSAT1B - Vss - VT3 ) 2 - 14 (AS)

A.2.2. AC and transient characteristics

A.2.2.1. Differential-mode gain versus frequency

The equivalent small-signal circuit of the CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp is shown in Fig. A.2. The expressions for the open-loop gain, the poles and zeros are:

A.2.2.2. Slew rate versus load capacitance

The slew rate is the minimum of the "internal" and the "external" slew rate:

SR min (A. 15)

A.2.2.3. Output voltage range versus rrequency

The output voltage range is limited by the supply voltage at lower frequencies (see A.2.1.2 above) and by the slew rate at higher frequencies:

SR Vout (A. 16)

21t f

A.2.2.4. Settling time

The CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp of Fig. A.l can be considered as a second-order system. The settling time thus depends on the phase margin of the opamp. If the system is underdamped (i.e. phase margin < 76.35°), an oscillating step response is observed and the settling time for a settling margin E is given by :

1 2 cos (PM) 1 sin2 (PM) [in(e) +-In(l- )] (17)

GBW sin2 (PM) 2 4 cos (PM)

If, on the other hand, the system is overdamped (i.e. phase margin > 76.35°), an exponential step response is observed and the settling time for a settling margin E is given by:

- in (E)

A.2.3. Second-order characteristics

A.2.3.1. CMRR versus frequency

The CMRR of the CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp of Fig. A.I (with mismatches included) is given by :

CMRR = --------------------

where c2 = c GS 2A + c GS 2B + c DB2A + cDBlA c3 = CDBS + Cn-well

A.2.3.2. Offset voltage

(A.24)

The systematic offset voltage is determined by the difference in voltage at the drain OfM2A (M1A) and M2B (M1B), and is given by:

Vas,syst. = ----- L1VDS2BA (A.2S)

The statistical offset voltage, on the other hand, is totally determined by mismatches between the transistors M1A-M1B and M2A-M2B.

A.2.3.3. Equivalent input noise voltage versus frequency

The equivalent input noise for frequencies up till the gain-bandwidth can be approximated as :

gm2 dVeq2 = 2 dVn12 + 2 dVn22 (--) 2

(A.26)

The integrated output noise for unity feedback is then approximately given by :

A.2.3.4. PSRR± versus frequency

The PSRR+ with mismatches and VB shorted to voo is given by:

A.2.3.6. Harmonic distortion

(A.28)

(A.29)

The second harmonic distortion ratio at the output of the CMOS two-stage opamp of Fig. A.I in open loop for a differential-input amplitude A is at lower frequencies given by :

- A ----- ----- (A.30)

In closed loop, this is divided by the square of the loop gain. The third harmonic distortion, on the other hand, is usually much smaller than the second harmonic distortion for CMOS circuits.

APPENDIX A. CHARACTERIZATION OF A CMOS lWO-STAGE OPAMP 269

A.2.3.7.lnfluence oftemperature on the characteristics

On the condition that the biasing is to first order insensitive to temperature variations, the most important changes come from the decrease of the mobility with increasing temperature. It can then easily be investigated that the DC gain, the gainbandwidth, the second pole and the Miller zero decrease with increasing temperature, while the first pole increases with increasing temperature. As a result, the phase margin is to first order independent of the temperature.

A.3. Desia=n results for the standard CMOS two-staa=e opamp

With the above analytic model, a CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp has been designed (see chapter 2) intended for standard applications in the ESATMICAS group. Since this opamp is used many times as example circuit throughout the book, the parameter values and design results are presented here briefly.

The design specifications for this standard opamp are : GBW~ 1 MHz CL = 10pF RL = 100kQ VDD/VSS = ±2.5 V Ao ~ 1000 = 60 dB PM~60° output range ~ ±2 V systematic offset voltage < 0.5 m V minimize power consumption!

The bias current and the compensation capacitor for the resulting design are then given by IB = 2.5 ~ and Cc = 1 pF. All transistor parameter values of the resulting design (as obtained by SPICE [VLA_80b]) are now summarized in the following tables. The circuit schematic is shown in Fig. A.1.

The performance characteristics of the designed standard two-stage amplifier are now summarized in the following table. The second column gives the values as calculated with the analytic model. The third column gives the values as obtained with SPICE [VLA_80b] simulations.

This concludes our discussion of the CMOS two-stage Miller-compensated opamp. In this appendix, a complete list of performance characteristics of an operational amplifier has been provided. In addition, a detailed analytic model for the CMOS two-stage opamp has been presented, as well as a set of parameters resulting from a practical design, which is frequently used as example circuit throughout the book.
