However if you qualify for any of the discounted fees on the right you should bring appropriate supporting proof for this.

Discounted feesFor Learners who are still at School If you are under 16 on the 31 August 2011, you may enrol on some part-time courses from this course guide but the listed fees will not apply.

For Learners who are aged 19 or over on 31st August 2011Recent national government changes to funding for adult education have had a big impact on the number and range of courses that can be offered with fee concessions for adults by all Colleges of further education.

These changes come into effect immediately for all courses running after the 1st of August 2011 and mean that you may now have to pay more for your courses than previously.

You can still expect to have a significant reduction on the price of your course if• You are on Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)

or Work-Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA-WRAG).

If, however, you are not in receipt of JSA/ESA-WRAG, it is likely that you will have to pay fees for your course, unless.• You do not yet have a Full Level 2

qualification and are studying for a Full Level 2 or an Entry or Level 1 qualification. (Excludes ESOL).

• You are aged between 19 and 24 and are choosing to study your first Full Level 3 qualification.

• You are studying for a Literacy or Numeracy qualification

Please note these fee changes will not affect anyone who is aged 16-18 on the 31st August 2011.

Payment assistance• You may be able to pay for your course

in gradual instalments or by Direct Debit.• You may be able to claim from our

Discretionary Learner Support Fund, ask an advisor for more information.

• Learners should speak to their Job Centre Plus Advisor to see if they are entitled to claim JSA/ESA.

Talk to Services for Students Information and Advice Officers for further help and guidance.

Proof of DiscountIf you think you are entitled to pay a discounted fee we need to see up-to-date proof of your entitlement when you enrol. You may be entitled to a discount because of your previous qualifications, depending on the course you want to do, or because of your benefits status. Note that the only benefits we are now allowed to consider for discounted fees are: · NASS support (for asylum seekers) · Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)· Work-related Employment Support Allowance (ESA-WRAG)

Confirmation that you are receiving benefit will be required.

For asylum seekers this will be your latest receipts from the National Asylum Seeker Support System (NASS).

• Course fees will only be refunded in full if a course is cancelled. If a course is closed prematurely, a partial refund will be given, based on the number of cancelled sessions. The College reserves the right to close any class on which insufficient learners have enrolled. The decision to close classes may be made two weeks before the course is due to start – so don’t leave it too late to enrol.

• If, because of an illness, you are unable to take up a place or complete a course, a partial refund may be given. A medical certificate must support the application for refund, and any refund given will be subject to an administrative charge of £15.

• If you do not take up a place or complete a course for any reason other than those listed above, there is no entitlement to a refund. You are also liable for paying any outstanding fees to the College.

• In exceptional circumstances, a refund may be made where it is considered appropriate.

• If a refund is granted, but you have fees outstanding, the refund will be used as a credit against fees due.

• In the event that a class tutor is ill every effort will be made to cover that class. If this is not possible the College will use reasonable endeavours to make up the lost time. In all such cases there shall be no entitlement to a refund.

• Refunds will not be given if the College has to close due to storm, flood, fire or other unforeseen emergency.

• If you choose not to take an examination, on a course where the exam fee is included in the listed fee, you will not receive a reduction or refund.

• Unless the College has cancelled a class, the College registration fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

• Refunds can only be approved by the College’s Data Processing Manager, MIS Manager (Management Information Services) or member of the Senior Management Team.

• If you decide to transfer to a lower fee course, there is no entitlement to a refund.

Please note: If a student wishes his/her refund to be paid to a third party, a letter of authorisation signed by the student must be sent with the refund request. This also applies if a third party has paid fees for a student.

As a condition of being accepted onto a course you must agree to keep to the Student Code of Conduct, which you can find in the course handbook and on posters around the College. The College also has a set of Values which both learners and staff are expected to adhere to. These College Values are on display throughout the College.

Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable AdultsBarnet College has a legal duty and responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

As part of this duty we have a Safeguarding Policy and Procedure.

Equal OpportunitiesBarnet College positively respects and values the diversity and ability of its community, and the contributions which people from a range of backgrounds and experiences bring to the institution. Barnet College is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all learners.

Barnet College will actively work to remove conditions which place people at a disadvantage, and vigorously combat

prejudice and bigotry, in order for all people to achieve their potential regardless of race, belief, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. Barnet College further recognises that different forms of disadvantage can and do interact. Where multiple disadvantages are found, Barnet College will take action to remove them.

To make sure that everyone is treated equally, we would like you to work with us to carry out this policy, and to check that there are no hidden obstacles to learner achievement. In order to do this we need to monitor learner enquiries, applications, enrolments and learning progress.

The College has declared its commitment to expose and eliminate racial prejudice where it is found to exist. In order for us to achieve our goal it is essential that you complete the Ethnicity section on the enrolment form.

Data ProtectionBarnet College holds records and processes personal information (including information of a sensitive nature such as ethnicity and medical conditions) in compliance with the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Please read the Declaration and Data Protection section of the enrolment form carefully before you sign, date and return it. You have a responsibility to provide accurate data and to inform us if your personal details (e.g. your address) change.

If you have any queries or would like a copy of our Data Protection Policy, you can write to the Data Protection Controller, Barnet College, Grahame Park Way, Colindale NW9 5RA.

Students often come here thinking they’ll learn how to throw a few bricks together, but it’s my job to get them to really understand the built environment – and, ultimately, to get them to see the world differently.
