Fall Aerification: Fall is my favorite time of the year in Oregon. Thecool crisp mornings with warm afternoons make for some of the bestgolfing weather. It is also a tremendous time to grow grass. Thecooler days allow the turfgrass to begin to recover from the swelteringheat of summer. As we wrap up a very long dry summer the continu-ous days of low mowing, rolling and lots of golfing foot traffic combineto create the ingredients that can lead to unhealthy anaerobic turf-grass. These anaerobic conditions will lead to a shallow rooting sys-tem and create numerous other problematic issues that can be verydetrimental to the greens overall health. This is why each year in thespring & fall we aerify the greens.
I would like to show you what this process looks like:
We aerify the greens using 5/8 inch side eject tines to create the holesin the surface about 4 inches deep.
We then use a machine called a core harvester to pick up the plugs offthe green. There is still the need of manual help to get it completelycleaned.
We finish the process by blowing the greens to get them completelyclean before we begin the next step of sanding. We use a machine that has a conveyer belt and spinners on the back tothrow sand out on the green. The goal is to apply enough sand thatwill fill the holes without applying too much that requires a lot of re-moval time.
A drag matt is then used to drag the sand into the holes after it hasdried. This is why good weather is so critical. We have to have drysand in order to get it into the holes.
You can seehere the fin-ished productthat we desireafter the wholeprocess is fin-ished. The goal be-hind the aerifi-cation processis to relievecompaction onthe playing sur-
face allowing air and water to penetrate which enhances the environ-ment to grow healthy roots. At the end of a summer golf season thegreens become what we call “Sealed Up”. The top layer is very com-pacted from 1000’s of people walking on them, greens mowers, androllers. When we are trying to grow this grass at or near 1000th of aninch, it is critical that we have healthy roots.
I hope you have a great golf season this fall…enjoy the great weather!!

For you lawn enthusiasts I have included an informationalarticle that will help you renovate your lawn. This is by farthe best time of the year to tackle this kind of project. Fol-low the steps and happy planting!!
Here is my 8 step formula for a fall renovation:Step 1. Mow your lawn at normal height.
Step 2. Spray your lawn with round-up at 2oz per gallonof water. This rate is for the concentrated round-up product.
Step 3. If there is a considerable amount of Bentgrass in your yard you will want to repeat step 2 two days afterbefore proceeding to step 3. 24 hours after you spray you will now want to thatch your yard. This is the mostlabor intensive step. If your lawn is fairly thatchy you will want to go across your lawn 2-3 times. Be prepared torake up a lot of debris and to have some way to get rid of this material. The thatching process is used to help thinout your lawn so the new seed can make contact with the soil.
Option B of Step 3. If your lawn is not very thatchy yet has that typical mixture of grasses and you would likea fresh start I recommend this strategy. 24 hours after you spray move to step 5 andfinish the following process. It will work. If you want to ensure better soil contact, rent an aerifyer and aerify the lawn first after step 2 then proceed to step 5. (I maybe trying this myself this fall on my lawn, so watch and see).
Step 4. I usually like to mow the lawn again at this point at a little bit lower height(1 ¼ inches) to help clean up anything that may not have gotten raked up (use thebag on your mower). Remember this grass is now dying so let’s get rid of it. Themore soil contact your new seed can get the better.
Step 5. You are now ready for seed. You will want to buy a Perennial ryegrassseed mixture. I prefer seeding fairly heavy (10-15lbs per 1000 square feet). So ifyour lawn is 2000 square feet you will want to use (20-30 lbs of seed).
Step 6. You will now mow your lawn one more time (with NO bag) at 1 ¼ inches. This will knock the seed down into the canopy of the existing grass that is left.
Step 7. Now fertilize your lawn with 16-16-16. Your rate should be about 7lbs. per 1000 square feet. So for a2000 square foot lawn you will use 14 lbs.
Step 8. This is the most important step! Water! You will want to keep your lawn damp continuously for the next7 days. Set up your irrigation clock so it comes on several times during the day to keep it damp. If you do nothave an automatic irrigation system Ido not recommend this whole proce-dure until late September.
I hope this may be of help to you lawnlovers. If you have any questions don’thesitate to stop me or email me [email protected]
