Congratulations to everyone who completed something for our Mountaineer

Week quilt show, and thank you to all who helped make it possible. Here is a

list of our people’s choice winners. Large Quilts – 1st - Nancy, Dresden &

Nine Patch; 2nd - Tracy, Colorful Tropics; and 3rd - Barbara Ann, Flowers in the

Mist. Small Quilts - 1st Chris, Merry Spring; 2nd - Nancy, Embroidery Blocks &

    Borders; 3rd - Terry, Inner Strength. Other – 1st - Linda, Mariner's Compass;

2nd - Melissa, Mini Patriotic Quilt and 3rd - Melissa, Log Cabin Star. Please

check our webpage soon to see pictures from the show.

Our quilt show was the last of our big projects this year, so now we’ll

hopefully have more time to concentrate on other work. Our challenge,

“Color Your World”, should be a fun one and should also help us practice a

new technique. So get out your colored pencils, paints, etc. and start a small

project that you can finish to show everyone in March.

I know the days are getting shorter and nights are getting cooler. But it’s

going to be perfect quilting weather! I can’t wait to see what you’ve been

    doing!

er changes will be made to our by-

laws. Copies will be available at the

meeting and will also go out as a

    separate attachment to the news-

    letter mailing.

    Congratulations

to Deborah Petrun winner of the

    “Mountaineer Diamond”

    Country Roads Quilt Guild’s

    2017 Opportunity Quilt!

Thanks go out to all who made the recent Mountaineer Week

Quilt Show (Oct. 20-22) a re-

    sounding success.

    Hopefully we’ll recognize some of

    those workers at our upcoming

    meeting.

    Until then, the following were

    those who registered to help:

    Barbara M, Betty C, Carol S, Cathy

    H, Frances C, Hannah M, Jane L,

    Karen S, Kathryn G, Laura S,

    Lesley K, Linda F, Lois C, Lou D,

    Kathryn for next month’s news.

    October 2017 Minutes

CRQG President Jane called the meeting to order. Hannah was welcomed as a

guest, accompanying her mother Monica. The Novelty/Mini was displayed, a

small quilt with pumpkins and cats, made by Linda.

The September meeting minutes were approved with no corrections. The mo-

tion was made by Monica and seconded by Karen. The motion carried.

There were no questions about the September Treasury report published in

the October newsletter. The motion to accept as made by Monica and Second

by Cathy. The report will be filed.

Jane thanked Judy for the October newsletter and told the group to send in-

puts for November to Judy as well.

The Opportunity Quilt has been quilted, with binding and hanging sleeve on it.

It was shown to the group. A title for the label, “Mountaineer Tribute 2017”

was suggested. Leslie motioned to accept the name and Jane seconded the

motion. Another suggestion for the quilt name was “Mountaineer Diamond.”

Brenda made a sub motion to amend the previous motion to add a second

name to the options to name the quilt, Linda F seconded the motion. A vote

was taken for the two choices for the quilt name. The “Mountaineer Diamond”

made by Country Roads Quilt Guild 2017 was unanimous. Karen agreed to

embroider the label and attach it before hanging on Tuesday, 17 October.

Linda discussed upcoming Mountaineer week quilt show. She was thankful

that all the time slots were filled. Linda announced that the guild will need a

new committee for the Mountaineer week show; Terry and Linda are ready to

pass the responsibility on. She said they would remain a part of the activity as

advisors. Linda told the group that the University has printed the tickets for

the Opportunity quilt. There are parking passes for Tuesday and Friday volun-

teers in the Lower Level of the parking garage. CRQG is paid $200 by WVU for

conducting the quilt show. There will be a special quilt made by students of

the International students in the English department.

Lesley discussed our guild by-laws. She reviewed the numbers of income ver-

sus expenses, showing a loss between Expenses and Income each year since

2010. The trend of loss appeared to be resolved because of the $3,000 for

hosting Ricky Tims Workshop in 2015-16. The R. Tims money was originally

intended for education expenses. All of the figures lead to the realization that

our Opportunity quilt and member dues are the sole income required for the

guild operating expenses that in the past have not balanced.

Thus, the proposal of adding Standing Rules and changing by-laws was dis-

cussed. The presentation by Leslie covered proposed changes. One item in

the proposal was well received, that is to separate our funds for educational

events purpose only such as workshops, lectures, trunk shows, etc. Patty mo-

tioned that CRQG separate designated education fund, initially seeded by

$2,400 the guild cleared after expenses from the Ricky Tims Workshop. Laura

seconded the motion. The motion carried. Extensive discussion on what stand-

ing rules to add and what by-laws to change took place. Guild President Jane

asked the By-laws committee (Leslie K, Karen S, Carol S.) to draw up succinct

changes to CRQG By-laws that they recommend. The changes are to be an-

nounced in the November newsletter to be able to vote at the November

meeting. There needs to be further discussion on diamond members.

Karen and Jane made a return trip to

    Mary's Quilt Shop

in Bedford, PA. They went to the Bon-

nie Hunter class in July, where Karen

won a return 2-night stay for herself

and a friend at the retreat center at-

tached to the shop. Mary is an expert

on antique quilts and designs her own

line of fabric. She exhibits in many

shows and was packing up things to

take to the Houston International Quilt

    Festival.

Gitta and Debbie attended the recent

quilt retreat at Tygart Lake, which pro-

vided an opportunity to pursue person-

    al projects.

    Several of our members—including

    Debbie, Deloris, Gitta, and Patty—are

already registered for the March 2018

Lewis County Quilt Retreat at Jackson’s

Mill. According to the web site (https://

    jacksonsmill.wvu.edu/events/lewis-

    county-quilt-retreat), three classes

    have already reached capacity. If

you’re planning to attend, you’ll want

to register before the Dec. 1 deadline.

Debbie, Deloris, Gitta, Judy, and Patty

have committed to the Border Creek

Station Mystery Quilt Club where the

final quilt won’t be completed until the

unveiling of the final installment in the

8-month project. If you want to get in

on the anticipation, visit Sew Special in

Uniontown and get your name on the

list! The first group meeting is Nov. 11.

Kathryn is participating in the Country

Roads Quilt Shop block of the month

and also (along with Debbie) in a block

of the month at Amy’s Quilt Room.

Laura reported that she was very im-

pressed with the Mason Dixon Festival.

“The weather was beautiful and the

cabins were perfect for a quilt show.

One cabin featured items for sale, one

with Peggy's work from the Country

Roads Quilt Shop, and one with items

made by Carol and daughter. There’s

talk that this might become an annual

event. If there’s another one, it would

be worthwhile to attend.” (See photos

    that follow on Pg. 3.)

    September Treasurer’s Report

The two day retreat October 6-7 was a success with 12 in attendance Friday

and 8 on Saturday. There was a yard of fabric swapped on Friday and a pat-

tern swap on Saturday. Debbie suggested we may do another one possibly

charging more than the $10 so as to have prizes and maybe a group project.

Gitta discussed the Rhombus Star Pattern she got from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Old business, Jane continues to collect change to pay for quilting of donated

    quilt for charity.

New Business: Sew Chic will have an Open House Nov. 18 giving out gifts with

a purchase. Currently Sew Chic has a draw your discount until 10/21.

The Program led by Vice President Debbie announced our new challenge

“Color My World” to be returned to our March meeting. The minimum size of

the challenge project must be 8” square, or larger. At least one object must be

colored using the technique of your choice (crayons, pencils, paint, fabric

markers, applique colored fabric, etc.). Your finished project should be com-

pleted and brought to our March 2018 meeting. A possibility of doing a Round

Robin Project was introduced. Linda Ross showed two projects from previous

round robin projects. Debbie asks members to think if you are willing to partici-

    pate in one.

Watch your newsletter for more details to come.

Many thanks go out to Peggy Ellwood (owner/operator of Country Roads Quilt

Shop) who organized and ran the quilt show portion of the event and for the

many individuals who assisted in that effort. Congratulations to Kim Michinak

who won the Journey’s End raffle quilt. According to Peggy, the sale of raffle

tickets and table runners contributed to approximately $2,600 that was

raised in support of the local school snack pack program.
