Dear 1st Presbyterian members and friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I told the session, staff and
congregation that I am planning to retire on June 15, 2019. I have served
as pastor in the Presbyterian Church for 35 years and have been blessed in
ever so many ways. I have been a pastor for: 1st Pres in Greenlawn, NY (5
years), Covenant Pres in Cinnaminson, NJ (12 years), and 1st Pres, Salt
Lake City, UT (18 years).
I am planning on staying in Salt Lake for the foreseeable future as
two of my three children and my grandson live here. But I will have to cut
formal ties with the congregation to make a clear path for new leadership
for 1st Pres.
Since May 15, 2001, my life and the ministry of 1st Pres have taken
many twists and turns.
-----Five associate pastors, several children’s (5) and youth
directors (4), five choir directors, one organist, one treasurer, one Child
Development Center director, three maintenance guys, and sixteen office
administrators.
With hundreds of members and friends, dozens of elders, deacons,
and ministry leaders, my 18 years here were filled with the joys and
struggles of life and ministry, successes and disappointments, great
experiences all with the love and grace of God in the Lord Jesus Christ.
With deep love for you all,
Pastor Mike
Rev Dr Michael Imperiale

FROM THE PASTORAL ASSOCIATE
The metaphorical reference to God as a rock happens about 24 times in
the Psalms. And this can be a comforting image. We want a God that is
strong and unmovable and unchanging. But the reference to God as a
rock is much deeper than this. If we go back to the beginning of Israel’s
journey, God provides life-saving water from a rock in Exodus 17. Moses
strikes a rock at God’s command and water gushes out of it, saving them
while in the wilderness. Later in Exodus 33 God literally hides Moses in
the cleft of a rock. So when the Psalmist refers to God as our rock, it is
not just that God is our strength and unmoved, but also that from God
comes salvation like that life saving water that flowed from a rock. And
when we need God’s protection God provides that. God as our rock
means God provides all that we need. God can be trusted for everything.
As we enter a time of transition, when Pastor Mike will retire and the
session will work to find an interim pastor to work with us, please
remember that this is God’s church and the image of God as our rock is
something we can trust. God can be trusted for everything this church
needs. It belongs to God. God will take care of it. Even though we will
feel transition, the rock will not move. The rock will provide everything
we need while in the wilderness. The rock will protect us when we need
it. Be assured that God is our rock and we can trust in that.
Blessings,
Pastor Chris pas-
Psalm 1:1-2

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

TREASURER’S REPORT
Fostering Renewal For 1st Pres
Last Fall, a group of our members met to come up with a list of ideas for revitalizing First Presbyterian
Church. These proposals are under ongoing review by the Session, and several have been implemented.
One of the most important is a clear procedure for welcoming and assimilating new people. Others include
an improved coordination of internal and external communications, a small group fellowship program
called Nites Out, an additional worship service (new happening WORSHIP 4.43) and a class on personal
witnessing.
Some of the proposals need someone to step up and lead. Please contact the Session through the clerk,
Elizabeth Duszak, if you can help or if you have ideas: [email protected].
A MESSAGE FROM THE SESSION

PER CAPITA…..WHAT IS IT?????
Per Capita is the amount that every Presbyterian (U.S.A.) church is asked to give for each member listed on
its active membership roll. Per Capita helps fund administrative costs for the denomination, but a large
portion comes back to Utah for ministry and mission support. How much do we give at First Presbyterian
Church? For 2019 the per capita for each member on our active roll is $39.45.
The Session has voted to remit per capita as it comes in. Please mark your gift as Per Capita or
place it in the blue envelope at the front of your box of offering envelopes.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY—FAITH EXPLORERS
YOUTH MINISTRY Spring is finally here! It has been a long winter.
The students and I are looking forward to some
youth room renovation projects, events, and service
work! Follow us on Instagram @ fpcyouthgroup to
keep up with what is going on!
The renovations in the youth room have been in full
swing. We purchased some furniture after finishing
the vinyl flooring. It is brighter and creates an
inviting space. We will be beginning on the
kitchen/coffee area over the next couple months
and are looking forward to updating that space!
The youth will be participating in the annual Feed
my Starving Children project on April 27th. We will
travel to Gardner Village and package meals for
families in the third world. This will be our fourth
year participating in this project.
We’ll all be heading over to the Gateway on April
28th to watch the Avengers: End Game. Bible
Study will be right after church and a light lunch.
Fellowship is important and our students love to get
together for the Marvel films.
The FPCSLC Basketball League is starting up April
7 and will go through May. Games will be on
Sunday nights from 3pm-9pm. We have 11 players
and are always looking for more!
If you would like to volunteer for any student
events, service projects, or open your house to a
bible study please don’t hesitate to email or give me
a call. Our calendar of projects/events can be found
on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

Save the Date—Vacation Bible School
July 29-August 2nd, 2019; 9:00 AM-Noon
Save the date for this year’s Vacation Bible School.
You won’t want to miss a fun-packed week of
games, crafts, snacks, and Bible stories. Many
volunteers are needed as well. Let Christin know if
you would be willing to join the VBS team. Helpers
are needed in demonstrating crafts, making snacks,
leading games, and directing groups of kids to the
right rotation. We’d love for you to join in the fun!
Spring Curriculum
This Spring, we will walk through the events of Holy
Week, leading up to the most important thing that
ever happened: Jesus died and was raised from the
dead, taking our punishment because we sin. We
will then explore many of the Old Testament
prophets who predicted this momentous event,
offering hope to the people of Judah and Israel.
Take a look at the following stories from the Jesus
Storybook Bible, by Sally Lloyd-Jones in
preparation for our Spring Curriculum: Operation
“No More Tears!” (Isaiah 9, 11, 40, 50, 53, 55, 60);
Washed with tears (Mark 14, Luke 7, John 12); The
Servant King (Mark 14, John 13-14); A dark night
in the garden (Luke 22, Mark 14, John 18); The sun
stops shining (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John
19) and God’s wonderful surprise (Matthew 28,
Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20).

Tuesday Men's Breakfast
The month of April—Finishing chapters 9, 10, 11,
12 and Epilogue of Tim Keller’s fabulous book
Making Sense of God. A few copies of the book are
still available. See Pastor Mike
In May/June—“What Pastor Mike has learned in
35 years of ministry” a gift book for each person each
week May 7th – June 11th.
Men's Activities:
We are looking at conducting several activities this
year which may include a Celebrity Dinner, our 2nd
"Hitting The Mark" at a local gun range, a night at
the races (go-carts), a canyon barbeque, and others
time permitting and availability of help in planning
and conducting the events.
Men's Retreat: Living In Freedom
Many of you may be wondering what happened with
the cancellation of the Men's Retreat? Well,
Evidently when we scheduled the retreat back in
October 2018, the camp calendar wasn't finalized at
the time and the record of our reservation was lost in
the shuffle. So due to the fact that there were no
reservations on the calendar, once it was finalized , it
was decided to close the camp for the mud season
and perform needed repairs to the facility. Since
then they have had no openings until this next fall.
At that time we would need to share the camp with
another men's group. This meaning that we would
share meal times but not meetings or recreation
activities. We would have separate meeting sites at
the camp. We are now working to see if we can line
up a weekend this fall with another group and will
notify everyone when this is finalized. So stay tuned.
Flower Bed Volunteers:
We are looking to sign-up volunteers to maintain
sections of our flowerbeds at FPC this coming
season. These sections will be small portions of the
existing flowerbeds around the church. Larger beds
will be divided into sections so that care time would
not become excessive. Each volunteer would be
responsible for the planting, fertilizing, weeding and
general care of the selected flowerbed. Many of the
flowerbeds are already planted and would require
only weeding, trimming and fertilizing on a monthly
or bi-monthly basis. If you are interested, we will be
having a short meeting following the 11:00AM
service on April 7th in the office area conference
room.

MEN’S MINISTRY
WELCOME TO NITES OUT! Imagine spending a fun evening out with a few friends from church, those
you know well and people you are just getting to know. About once a
month, you and your friends will decide on what, when and where. It could
be a night at the movies, an afternoon hike and picnic, a potluck dinner, a
game night, a concert…it’s up to your group.
“So, who is in our group?” That’s the fun part! Every six months, you
will be mixed at random with adult couples and singles who have signed up
to participate. Your group may start out with six people, because it gives you the opportunity to invite new
people to join with you. That’s a great way to welcome people who are new to our church!
“But now that I’m part of this group, I want us to stay together!” There’s no reason why you can’t
keep on spending some time together, and still become part of a different group for the next six months.
“I have some questions.” See Doug Gould or email him at [email protected].
“OK, I’m interested in giving it a try. How do I do it?” Easy. Sign up at www.fpcslc.org/nitesout
You will get an email that tells you who’s in your group, and explains the next steps.

GET TO KNOW YOUR DEACONS The Board of Deacons of First Presbyterian Church
is made up of 24 men and women who are elected by
the congregation to serve the members and friends
in a variety of ways. The origin of the word is from
the Greek, “diakonos” meaning a servant or an
attendant, a waiter, or special teacher. Each of our
Deacons serves on two or three “teams” that are
designated in the “Deacon Guidelines.” The 24
members are a well-rounded and conscientious
group who feel privileged to lead in faith and serve in
trust in the Lord.
Chuck Britter (class of 2019) is the
Moderator of the board this year. He
and his family have been attending 1st
Pres. since 2004. The teams he is
involved in include: Special Needs,
Congregational Care, and New
Visitors. Chuck says his favorite thing about being a
Deacon is, “Along with loving to help others in need,
I enjoy being able to organize, encourage and
support our Deacons in the work they are engaged in
in the support of our congregation.” His favorite
quote from the Bible is John 3:16-17. “For God so
loved the world that he gave his only Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish but have
eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not
to condemn the world, but that the world might be
saved through him.”
Melissa Piercey is the Secretary of the Board, and
is in the class of 2019. She and her family have been
attending 1st Pres. for 12 years. Her favorite thing
about being a Deacon is getting to know and serve
members of the congregation. Her teams include
Congregational Care, Bereavement, and New
Visitors. When asked about her favorite Bible verse,
she replied that it really seems to change depending
on her present situation in life – isn’t that true for all
of us! But the one she chose to share with us is
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all this through Christ who
gives me strength.”
Don and Barbara Alexander are members of the
2019 class as well. They have been attending for
about 8 years. Don
works on the
Communion, Fellowship,
and Congregational Care
teams, while Barbara
helps with Fellowship,
Congregational Care, and Bereavement. Don says
his favorite thing about being a Deacon is
“Interacting with other people and feeling like I’m
contributing to the church body.” Barbara likes to
serve others by working in the kitchen and preparing
food – she too enjoys fellowship with other Deacons
and reaching out to encourage others. Barbara’s
favorite verse is the same as Melissa’s “I can do all
things through Him who strengthens me.” And
Don’s is Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that
neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Bert and Dorothy Dart raised their family at 1st
Pres. and have spent their 55 years as active
members. They are in the 2019 class of the Deacons.
Bert has served two terms as Moderator of the
Deacons and enjoys
serving because it gives
him an opportunity to get
to know members on a
more personal basis. His
teams are Congregational
Care and Flowers. Bert is a life-long resident of Utah
and has held numerous leadership positions at 1st
Pres. He has served on the Session multiple times,
as Chair of Pastor Seeking Committees, he and
Dorothy were sponsors of Westminster Fellowship
(youth group) in the 70’s and he has served “on more
fund-raising committees than I can count.” He loves
to pay calls on members of the congregation, serving
in any capacity that is required. His favorite
scripture is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in
him should not perish but have eternal life.” Dorothy
9
is the lead member of the team that coordinates
flowers for the sanctuary. She arranges for members
to sponsor flowers for the services, and afterwards
prepares small arrangements of flowers for delivery
to home-bound members. She and Bert often deliver
the flowers on Sunday afternoons. She also assists
with any other team that needs help. Dorothy enjoys
serving as a Deacon because she, “Loves working
with members who willingly serve others and care
for our worship services and church.” Her favorite
Bible verse is a reflection of the joy she finds in her
faith, Psalm 118:24, “This is the Day the Lord has
made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Roger Durst is a member of the 2019 class, and
this is the third time he has served as a Deacon. He
has been attending 1st Pres. for “Twenty-two +
years.” He is the leader of the Special Care Team.
This team is responsible for attending to the
temporary physical needs of ailing or
homebound members of the
congregation. This often consists of
things like rides to the doctor or the
delivery of meals to a family that is in
crisis. His favorite thing about being a
Deacon is the “Constant reminder of the eternal need
and obligation for service to others.” His strong faith
is predicated on the first verse in the Bible, “In the
beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
These folks constitute the Class of 2019. If you have
any questions, or know of anyone who should be
assisted in any way by these wonderful Deacons,
please let them know.

SERVICE
OPPORTUNITIES
In March, Pastor Mike informed you along with the Session and
staff of his upcoming retirement on June 15th of this year having served 1st
Pres as pastor for 18 years. He also sent a letter to the members and many
friends of the congregation. “It is with a mixture of thoughts and
emotions that I face the last weeks of ministry with you.”
With help from the Presbytery, Session is responsible for
“succession planning.” The Session is seeking an Interim Pastor. The
tasks of an interim involve helping the congregation understand and
experience
----a review of the church’s recent history (2001-present)
----1st Pres’ unique identity (How would you describe our church to
others?)
----preparing for new leadership (Who are the present de facto
leaders?)
----how 1st Pres is linked to the Presbytery of Utah and PCUSA (EP
----creating a vision for a new future (ready to welcome a new
pastor).
An effective interim pastor will use preaching, teaching,
moderating session, interaction with members of the congregation to
incorporate these important interim tasks. The interim process can at
least take 6 months, at most 1½ years before a new installed pastor
arrives.
Pastor Chris continues as Pastoral Associate. Between now and
June 15th, Pastor Mike and Pastor Chris will continue their co-ministry.
But Pastor Chris should not be expected, nor should she take on
additional responsibilities.
With Pastor Chris and the Interim Pastor, Session should consider
any changes in her responsibilities if need be. Currently, she is the pastor
who oversees Children’s Ministry with Christin Abbott; Youth Ministry
with Nathan Parrish, Deacons with Chuck Britter, moderator;
Community Service activities; 4:43 Worship.
In consultation with the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry, the
Session will determine when and how the congregation should elect a
Pastor Nominating (Search) Committee (PNC). The PNC will write a
Mission Information Form (MIF) describing 1st Pres and its hopes for a
new pastor. The MIF is then placed with the PCUSA’s Church Leadership
Connection service. The PNC can also post the position online in a variety
of ways. Pastors looking for a call from a congregation write a Personal
Information Form (PIF) which is referred to appropriate openings in the
denomination.
T.S. Eliot said, “The one constant in life is change.” This will mean
change for 1st Pres in the coming months. All under the guidance and
providential plan of God for us.
