Electrus Federal Credit Union Merges/Partners with SPIREMembers of Electrus Federal Credit Union voted in favor of a partnership/merger with SPIRE Credit Union, effective December 1, 2019. The name of the combined organizations is SPIRE Credit Union. To honor the credit union’s 62-year legacy, the name of the Brooklyn Center location will be Electrus - A Division of SPIRE Credit Union. Electrus, a federally chartered credit union founded in 1957, has 5,300 members and $60 million in assets. Their field of membership includes contractors, members, retirees, and office personnel of the following International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Unions: 343, 292, and 160.

Don’t Be Spoofed!What was the number one scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission in 2018? Imposter scams.

An imposter scam is when someone pretends to be a person you know or trust, like your grandma, employer, or even an official from the IRS. Over 535,000 people report being a victim of this scam. One in five of those victims reported losing money, to the tune of nearly $488 million. With technology, fraudsters can spoof emails, phone numbers and text messages to make it look like an email or call is coming from someone it actually is not.

Here is how to protect yourself:•Beware of unexpected emails, messages or phone calls asking

to verify your personal information or account/card numbers. Legitimate companies you do business with will generally not send emails asking you to do this. If in doubt, call the company to verify. Make sure to look up their phone number through other means and not by calling the number provided in the email.

•If you receive a strange email with a link in it, you can use your mouse and hover or long press (but do not click) over the link. This will review the true destination/website where you will be directed to if you actually clicked on the link.

•Never reply – only forward! By selecting reply to the email it will be sent back to the fake “channel” the fraudstercreated; selecting forward will require you to enter in the actual email address – this is especially important when the email address is being spoofed.

As a reminder, SPIRE will NEVER unexpectedly call, email or text you and ask you to provide your personal information, full account or card numbers and/or online login credentials. If ever in doubt, hang up and call us to verify first.

Rachael Reiling Named to Top Women in FinanceRachael Reiling, SPIRE Credit Union’s business development director, was recently honored as one of the 36 Top Women in Finance by Finance & Commerce. This award recognizes women who make notable contributions to their professions and communities.

“I am grateful to be included with this impressive group of professional women,” says Reiling, “I always strive to learn from other leaders, which helps me grow both personally and professionally.”

With fifteen years in banking, Reiling has served in a range of leadership roles. Her work in Business Development for SPIRE has helped to deepen relationships with employer groups, provide personal finance education to their employees, and expand the SPIRE banking relationships within these groups. Reiling recently attained her Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Reiling is passionate about volunteerism and giving back, not only in her community but around the world. Over the past six years traveling abroad, she has helped women victimized by human trafficking, as well as provided professional education inless-developed countries on the credit union industry.

SPIRE ScholarshipsAvailable

Primary members of SPIRE Credit Union whose accounts are in good standing are eligible to apply. Scholarships awarded for the 2020 – 2021 school year include: • (3) Traditional scholarships for $1,000• (2) Non-Traditional scholarships for $1,000

Applicants will be selected by a committee based on the following: overall presentation of essay and application (appearance, style, grammar, content); community involvement; school/extracurricular activities.Application deadline is April 15, 2020Scholarships will be paid out directly to the school during the student’s first quarter/semester with at least a 2.0 grade point average. Any funds not used within one year will be returned to SPIRE.
