. As he set off,he saw a truck coming and as he knew the driver ,he climbed onto the back of the open truck and stopped near a river bed .It was dry season ,the river was shallow and he couldn’t find even the smallest of fish as the water was not deep enough . He returned after a long hot walk back to the bazar .The thought of jalebis made him think what could he do . He saw a boy playing a flute and after a little conversation between the two, they planned to exchange each other’s fishing rod and the flute . When Ranji got the flute, he created a shrill, squeaky noise which startled a magpie and it flew away from a mango tree. The notes sounded lovely to him , but they startled people passing by .

A magpie sitting on a mango tree

As he was playing the flute near the clock tower, he met a boy who was carrying empty milk cans and he took the flute from Ranji

CLASS: 5 SUBJECT: MATH

LESSON: FRACTIONS( Multiplication and Division)

Division of Fractional Numbers

Steps of Division of Fractional Numbers (only for understanding)

Step1: If the fraction is a mixed fraction, convert it to improper fraction. Step2: Write the first number as it is.

Step3: Replace “÷” by “x” sign.

Step4: Write the reciprocal of the other number.

Step5: Then simplify.

Note: Whole number means "number/1", so the reciprocal is "turning the

number upside down".

Division of a fraction by a whole number

Rule: Fraction ÷ Whole number = Fraction x Reciprocal of whole number(except for the case of zero). Example 1:

Example 2:

First change mixed fraction into improper fraction.

(Simplify the fraction criss-cross and cross it out with a slash after dividing

by a common factor and write the quotient next to it)

=1

Division of whole number by a fractional number

Rule: Whole Number ÷ Fractional Number = Whole Number x Reciprocal of

the Fractional Number.

Example 1:

Example 2:

Division of a fractional number by a fractional number

Rule: First Fractional Number ÷ Second Fractional Number = First Fractional

Number x Reciprocal of Second Fractional Number.

Example1:

Example 2:

Properties of Division

1. When a fractional number is divided by 1, the quotient is the fraction

itself.

Example:

2. When 0 is divided by a non-zero fractional number, the quotient is 0.

Example:

3. When any non-zero fractional number is divided by itself, the quotient is

1.

Example:

4. The reciprocal of zero does not exist. So we cannot divide any fractional

number by zero.

WORD PROBLEMS (Write examples in c.w copy)

1. 7

4 of a number is 84. Find the number.

Solution: According to the problem,

7

4 of a number = 84

Number = 84 × 4

7

[Here we need to multiply 84 by the reciprocal of 4/7]

= 21 × 7 = 147 Therefore, the number is 147.

2. One half of the students in a school are girls, 5

3of these girls are studying in

lower classes. What fraction of girls are studying in lower classes?

Solution:

Fraction of girls studying in school = 2

1

Fraction of girls studying in lower classes = 5

3 of

2

1

= 5

3 ×

2

1

= 10

3

Therefore, 10

3 of girls are studying in lower classes.

3. Maddy reads three-fifth of 75 pages of his lesson. How many more pages he needs

to complete the lesson? Solution:

Maddy reads = 5

3 of 75

= 5

3 × 75

= 45 pages. Maddy has to read = 75 – 45. = 30 pages. Therefore, Maddy has to read 30 more pages.

4. A herd of cows gives 4 litres of milk each day. But each cow gives one-third of total milk each day. They give 24 litres milk in six days. How many cows are there in the herd? Solution: A herd of cows gives 4 litres of milk each day. Each cow gives one-third of total milk each day = 1/3 of 4 Therefore, each cow gives 4/3 of milk each day. Total no. of cows = 4 ÷ 4/3 = 4 × ¾ = 3 Therefore there are 3 cows in the herd.

The Nervous System- The nervous system works continuously to control

all other body systems and sense organs. The nervous system is made up

of three parts - brain , spinal cord and the nerves.

The Nervous System

Brain- The brain is the centre of control . The brain has three main parts-

cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla.

The Human Brain

Peripheral Nerves

Cerebellum

1) Cerebrum- It helps us to think, learn, remember, speak and feel.

2) Cerebellum- It is responsible for control and coordination of

voluntary muscles like movement of limbs. It helps to balance the

body while walking, running, cycling and even helps to keep you in

an upright position.

3) Medulla- Its function is to control the movement of involuntary

muscles used in breathing, blinking of eyes, heartbeat, digestion

etc.

Spinal cord – It starts from the medulla and goes down to the end of

spine. Nerves from the spinal cord are spread all over the body.

Messages travel to- and-fro between the brain and the rest of the body

through the spinal cord.

Nerves – Nerves are like wires that link the whole body to the brain,

made of neurons.

A nerve cell

Types of nerves :-

1) Sensory nerves – They carry information from sense organs to the

brain.

2)Motor nerves- These nerves carry information from the brain to our

muscles or organs and make them move. For example ,the watering of

given place and time.

CLIMATE

The weather conditions that prevail over a large area and for a

long period of time is called climate.

The world can be divided into seven major climatic regions i.e.

very hot and wet, hot and wet, very hot and dry, cold and dry,

warm and wet, very cold and Mediterranean (A Mediterranean

climate or dry summer climate is characterized by dry summers

and mild, wet winters. The climate receives its name from the

Mediterranean Basin, where this type of climate is most

common).

WHAT INFLUENCES CLIMATE?

Factors that influence the climate of a particular region are:-

a) Distance from the Equator

b) Height above the sea level (altitude)

c) Distance from the sea

d) Direction of the winds

e) Humidity and rainfall

HEAT ZONES

The earth is divided into three heat zones on the basis of the

difference in their temperature.

a) TORRID ZONE: - The Torrid Zone or the Tropical Zone lies

on both sides of the Equator, between the Tropic of

Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The climate is hot and

humid throughout the year because direct rays of the Sun

fall over it.

b) TEMPERATE ZONE :- The Area lying between Tropic of

cancer and Arctic circle in Northern hemisphere is known

as the Northern Temperate Zone and between Tropic of

Capricorn and Antarctic Circle in southern hemisphere is

known as the Southern Temperate Zone respectively. It is

neither very hot nor very cold as these zones are away

from the equator and also from the poles.

c) FRIGID ZONE:- The area lying between the Arctic Circle

and the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere and that

between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole in the

Southern Hemisphere are the Frigid Zones. It remains very

cold throughout the year as it receives slanting rays of the

Sun.
