Hip hop music, also called hip-hop rap music or hip-hop music is a music genre, consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies, rapping a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. Creation of the term hip hop is often credited to Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster flash and the furious 5Universal Zulu nation founder Afrikaa bamaataa is credited with first using the term to describe the Subculture in which the music belonged. Hip hop as music and culture formed during the 1970s when Block parties became increasingly popular in New York city, particularly among African Americans, Dj kool herc, who is generally considered the father of hip hop

1950: The Soundclash contest between Coxsone Dodd’s “Downbeat” and Duke Reid’s “Trojan” gives birth to DJ Battling

1969: James Brown records two songs that influence the drum programming in today’s rap – “Sex Machines” and “Funky Drummer”

1973: DJ Kool Herc deejays his first block party. The Zulu Nation is officially

1974: After seeing DJ Kool Herc Grandmaster Caz, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa start playing at parties

1970’s 1980’s

1978: the term "rap music“ is coined. focus shifts toward the emcees, Kurtis was first rapper to be signed to a major record deal

1979 :Grandmaster Flash forms one of the most influential rap groups ever, The Furious 5: the Sugar hill Gang’s “Rapper's Delight "became the first known rap hit

1981:The Beastie Boys are formed, the first Caucasian group in hip hop history

1981 : Blondie's rapture Debuting in 1981, the music video was the first rap video ever broadcast on MTV

1980’s

1987: Public Enemy stuns the world with Yo! Bum Rush The Show, starting genesis of politically-charged hip-hop.

1988: N.W.A further the gangsta rap movement with their gold album, Straight Outta Compton

1988:Cypress Hill release their self-titled debut, and initiate a campaign to legalize hemp

1990: Rap receives its own Grammy category

1986: Ice T helps pioneer gangsta rap in the west coast with his rap core singles “Body Rock" and "Killers."

1990’s

1993: Tupac debuted his rapping skills in a vocal turn in Digital Underground's "Same Song"

1993:Atlanta’s Outkast releases its first album, marking a move away from coast-centric hip-hop..

1993-1996: rap music breaks into a battle between east coast rappers and east coast rappers.

1997: with the death of Tupac and biggie coastal hostilities die down

1992:West Coast gangsta rap starts to rule hip-hop with Dr. Dre’s solo album The Chronic

1990’s 2000’S

1998: Lauryn Hill's solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill wins 5 Grammy's including Album of the Year and Best New Artist

1999: the birth of a new sub-culture of rap music called crunk it comes to popularity by lil jon and the east side boyz

2001: 8 ball and mjg released a chop and screwed version of their album space age 4 eva bringing new light to hits genre

2003: T.I released his 2nd album Trap Muzik, along with rapper Ludacris brings light to the Atlanta and dirty south rap scene.

1998: Dr. Dre signs Eminem to a deal, bringing the first white rapper to aftermath record
