A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR: With this years council terms coming to an end, I’d like to thank each and every one of you for making this an exciting and successful year. We have met nearly all our goals set last August and have made it a priority to listen and respond to the needs of our local members. This year San Antonio has given out more memberships than ever, created new scholarship opportunities, provided continuing educational units each month, and hosted fun new social events. Another accomplishment was creating the “Getting to Know Your Reps” newsletter which offers a fun way to distinguish our valuable sponsors. IIDA is a grassroots organization that depends on those who donate their time and money, and we relish the opportunity to recognize those who give so much. Thank you again for all the hard work and for helping to make the San Antonio City Center so successful. I’d like to encourage all of you to consider being part of next year’s success by volunteering for the council or events throughout the year. I look forward to serving you as Past Director and representing San Antonio on the Chapter Board! Spring 2010 Issue GRANT & SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS It pays to be a part of IIDA! PETER DANKO CEU: ‘OMG IT’S GREEN!’

On January 19th, Workplace Resource hosted a full house as designers flocked to

eir Barrier- Free Continuing Education Credit and improve their understanding of thegulations. Peter Grojean, P.E., RAS (Registered Accessibility Specialist) delivered chtime presentation and spoke on TDLR issues that designers often encounter; ally offering information on registering projects, plan reviews, and inspections. His

also covered a lot of common Accessibility misconceptions and problems that he n during his years as a RAS. To name just a few of the frequently overlooked ccessible sinks designed with accessible adjoining counter space, toilet room mounted in the correct location, closets with required clear floor areas, and proper ld heights. Perhaps his most important piece of advice was for designers to be roactive with their RAS’s. He reiterated that it’s always better to ask too many ns now than deal with a costly mistake later.

Peter Danko, internationally-known furniture designer, visited San Antonio on ry 18th and IIDA was lucky enough to have him speak for our February CEU event. f us are familiar with his most famous pieces; the seat belt chair in particular. But U gave us a rare opportunity to go beyond the chair and see the man and the s behind its inception.

Mr. Danko explained his ‘OMG’ theory, which stands for “obviously manifested He believes that every piece of furniture he designs should celebrate its inherent ualities, rather than disguising them. “Green”, he explained, can still be romantic s and traditional in design (this was best illustrated with pictures of modern molded d chairs that alluded to classic Chippendale designs). He drove the message y adding that it is not enough to merely “green-up” all the components of a design, er each decision must be thoughtfully calculated as part of a whole sustainable nly then can we really achieve environmentally-conscious design.

IIDA STUDENT DAY 2010

TERSORO PROJECT TOUR

On March 4th, a lucky group of IIDA members were given the rare opportunity to new Tesoro facilities on Ridgewood Parkway in Northeast San Antonio. The

tour commenced with stops along the cafeteria, in-house fitness center, trade nd general offices, all of which was highlighted with Teknion furniture. The ul reception area was underscored with an elegant, custom stacked-marble on desk, rumored to have cost more than $260,000.

Overall, it was a great chance to take a glimpse of a highly-designed and high- space (which was reiterated with the numerous security checkpoints throughout

lding) that we probably would not have had the chance to experience otherwise. thanks to OfficeSource Ltd. & Teknion.

The Student Day conference held in Houston, Texas last February was a great ss for the UTSA IIDA chapter. The student organization worked very diligently to raise oney for the trip through the INDEX event. They had a great turn-out of students rs & seniors) and the event helped to get everyone excited about the conference. Four UTSA students were chosen to participate in the Design Charette challenge. beth Valdez, a junior, was one of the winning team members and was presented with ce of a Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass window. Students also had the privilege to

any of Houston's distinguished Interior/Architectural design firms as well as meet vendors and professionals within the industry. As a whole, the students were very ful for the opportunity to attend and for all the hard work that was put into the event. fe to say that they are already anxiously awaiting next year’s conference!

Fun times abound at the Mardi Gras event which took place on Thursday, February 18th. Acenar restaurant on Houston St. served as the backdrop for this event, and provided guests with delicious Mexican-inspired hor d’oeuvres and libations.

Attendees were encouraged to enter the mask design competition, and nearly thirty local designers and design students did just that! The competition was stiff, but four contenders were chosen as winners of the following categories; best wearable, best non-wearable, most sustainable, and people’s choice. (Take a look at the awesome winning masks below). The event was very well-attended with more than 60 guests, which nearly filled the private balcony level that was reserved for the event. Overall, the social raised approximately $300 for TAID efforts, and offered everyone who turned out with a welcome break from the work week.

CEU: THE BASIC CHANGING TRENDS…

Jones and Cook played generous host to a group of IIDA members on Wednesday, March 24th as they met for a CEU presentation by Allsteel: ‘The Basic Changing Trends of Demographics and Body Sizes’. The presentation shed some light on our changing workforce and the generational differences contained within each and every place of business. An example would be the comparison of the Baby-Boomer generation vs. the new “Generation Y”: while the former typically favors a traditional work week and compensation based on longevity, the latter prefers flexible working hours and is more likely than any other age group to rely on the latest technology.

The presentation also delved into the concept of Universal Design. While most of us are familiar with this in one way or another, it will become more important than ever in the upcoming decades. As America’s largest population group is aging and the average body mass index is on the rise, design considerations will also have to adapt to meet these demographic needs. Ergonomic considerations for furniture are extremely important as employees spend more time in front of their computer than ever before. Thank you again to Jones and Cook, Allsteel, and Green Oasis Plantscapes for sponsoring this valuable CEU and luncheon.

PHILANTHROPY PROJECT- HABITAT FOR HUMANITY On April 10th, IIDA members, family and friends rolled up their sleeves to lend a

hand for a worthy cause. It was a productive day as everyone involved was put to work on a variety of tasks ranging from siding installation, roofing, building sheds, to painting and staining trim. Special thanks to our Philanthropy Coordinator, Vicki Hartsfield, for setting up this marvelous event and to all our hard-working volunteers who sacrificed a Saturday to help our local community. If you missed our Habitat for Humanity event, check out www.habitatsa.org for future volunteer opportunities here in San Antonio.

Every year, IIDA SACC pulls together the San Antonio design community and

beyond with our exciting and colorful annual event, ‘Imagine That’. This year was no exception, as the Fire and H20 theme lit up the night at the Museo Alamada on Saturday, May 22nd. The design competition challenged participants to convey the theme with an outdoor sculpture that captured the essence of fire, water, or both. Guests of the gala were treated to an array of delicious goodies and drinks, while they perused the endless line of incredible silent auction items. One lucky raffle winner even walked away with a brand new i-Pad courtesy of Texas Wilson! The evening came to a close with a live auction of all the design competition entries and each unique creation left with a new owner.

IIDA San Antonio City Center owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to all of our sponsors, underwriters, silent auction donors, and committee members who helped make this wonderful event possible. Below are just a few of the fabulous pictures courtesy of J&M Photography. Be sure to check out their website at http://www.jmphotosa.com/imaginethat2010 to see all the amazing photos from the evening. Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you again next year at Imagine That 2011!
