4 Eastern District Association of AAHPERD 2013 Convention

2013-2014 eDa/aahPeRD - President

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 91st EDA Convention in historical Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Our Council for Conventions has done an outstanding job putting together a wonderful conference. As you look through the program, you will find great programs and activities. There is something for everyone. Along with the convention programs, please take the time to join them as they receive these awards and give their lectures.

It has been my honor to serve as your President this past year. We all are aware of the trials facing us and our programs. My theme of “Are We Up to PAR? Professionalism, Advocacy and Relevance” was chosen to remind us that we are in control of our fate.

How we are perceived and the impact we have on our clientele is directly affected by our professionalism, how we advocate for our programs and positions and not allowing ourselves to be viewed as irrelevant. We are leaders in the fight for healthy lifestyles. Our present and future are in our hands. Please bear this in mind as you attend the various programs and activities.

Please enjoy yourself. Take advantage of this historic area. There will be a trip to the Valley Forge National Park, and we are minutes away from King of Prussia. Catch up with old friends and, hopefully, make some new ones. Please come up and introduce yourself, if I don’t already know you. People who attend our conferences serve as role models for our profession. Have a GREAT conference!

John G. Helion

2012-2013 eDa/aahPeRD Past – President

I would like to welcome everyone to the 91st EDA-AAHPERD Convention. Judy Ingram, Rick Stevenson, Carol Ciotto, and the Council for Conventions have worked extremely hard over the past year to bring you what we believe is an outstanding program. Our very own Irene Cucina, current AAHPERD President, one of the great leaders of AAHPERD and EDA will be our Keynote Speaker.

Please join us at the Exhibitor’s Reception, Wednesday evening, to greet and thank our exhibitors who support us and to enjoy some snacks. Stop by the Registration Desk and contribute to the EDA Social Justice Committee’s Canned Food Drive in coordination with Manna on Main Street, a local food bank. Please also consider donating blood. Check the Registration Desk to make an appointment.

There are many great presenters in each discipline. Many Health sessions qualify for CHES credits. CEU’s are available through Plymouth State University. Program topics range from “Help! I’m Aging and I Don’t Want to be Old” to “Big Kids Like to Play” to “Bullying in Sports” to “Connecting Culture and Dance Through Literacy” to “A Little DAP for your APE”. Take some time and peruse these programs.

Friday is a busy day. This year’s Memorial Lecture will be offered by Dr. Ron Feingold, a Past President of NYS AHPERD, EDA and AAHPERD. He will memorialize the “Leadership” of Past EDA Presidents Dorothy Massey (RI) and Douglas Wiseman (NH). The always well done and very popular Dance Gala begins at 5:30pm. Later Friday evening will be the Taste of the States, the Silent Auction, the EDA Challenge, and finally the “Freedom Dance,” our All Convention Social.

On Saturday, please join us at the EDA Awards Banquet where so many of our deserving professionals are honored.

It has been an exciting and learning experience to serve you and EDA over the past three years. I would like to thank you again for this opportunity. EDA is a strong group of people. Like any family, we have had our differences, but in the end, we always come together to work for the betterment of EDA and our professions. I have certainly “Felt the Love, Learned, and Enjoyed the Life!” Thank you to everyone. I hope you enjoy the convention.

7Eastern District Association of AAHPERD 2013 Convention

aahPeRD President 2012-2013

Greetings from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance!

Irene Cucina, D.P.E.

What a pleasure it is to bring greetings to you, my Eastern District family, from your national professional organization, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). I bring greetings on behalf of the AAHPERD Executive Committee: President elect, Gale Weidow, Past President Brad Strand, CEO Paul Roetert and myself. As many of you know my leadership in our profession began in the Eastern District and I want to thank all of the current and past leaders for their willingness to continue the important work of leading our profession.

EDA has a strong commitment to the HPERD professionals within our 14 states. Colleagues from multiple disciplines are gathered to grow professionally, connect with old friends and make new ones, network and share ideas, and participate in community of like-minded people.

I applaud President John Helion and the EDA Executive Board on the theme for the 2013 Convention, “Are We Up To PAR? Professionalism, Advocacy, and Relevance.” As I traveled across the country this year on behalf of AAHPERD, the number one concern has been advocating for who we are and what we do. We all have the desire to be treated with respect and professionalism by other teachers, parents, and administrators. It is our responsibility to continue our professional development and improve our work to make what we do relevant to the changing needs of our customers.

Finally, I would like to invite you to the 2013 AAHPERD National Convention, April 23-27 in Charlotte, NC. The Southern District Association of AAHPERD and NCAHPERD have already begun preparing for the convention. Charlotte, NC is the home of the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. With this in mind, I selected “DRIVE YOUR FUTURE” for this year’s convention theme. I do not want you all to think that this means we are an organization that goes around in circles only to end up where we started. Instead we would prefer you think of the Alliance as: 1) an organization that moves with strength, power, energy and passion; 2) we are an organization that relies on the talents of our drivers (our members) and pit crew (our staff); and 3) we are the primary vehicle for developing and disseminating professional guidelines and standards, for fighting childhood obesity and the illnesses associated with childhood obesity, and for promoting healthy active lifestyles for all people. I hope you will all be there as the checkered flag is waved and we are crossing the finish line.

I am looking forward to spending time with you during the convention. Enjoy your time together and all you will learn. Thank you for all you do to promote healthy, active, and creative lifestyles for all.

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young (Henry Ford)”.

Ms. Janice arnold, Maryland

Janice “Jan” Arnold is one of the true greats in health education. During her 38 years as an educator with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, the last 10 as the Health Resource Teacher, she has been an outstanding leader and a model advocate for health and physical education. She has also touched hundreds of young lives through her many years of coaching. While she presents a quiet modest front, Jan is one our most effective long term leaders at the state and district level. She has served the Eastern District Association as Vice President of Health, a member of the Council for Services and Council of Conventions and on the Credentials and Elections Committee. For those who remember the smoothly executed highly successful Baltimore EDA-AAHPERD Convention (2006), it will come as no surprise that Jan was a member of the local planning committee. In her home state of Maryland, Jan has served as President of MAHPERD, Vice President of Health, served on numerous committees and has been one of four key people to participate in every step of the review process for the Maryland state curriculum for health education. She has also been a valuable leader for Anne Arundel county including creating their wellness policy. Anne Arundel is regularly referred to as a model program. Her most recent accomplishment is that of being hired by the Maryland State Department of Education where she will serve in the Health Education Specialist’s office. Walter Lee III says of Jan, “Ms. Arnold brings passion and purpose to the Health Field. She spearheads initiatives that are not only good for students but good for the community as a whole. Her conviction to comprehensive health education is paralleled by none. She makes opportunities for others to learn of its importance and volunteers to make sure she is on decision-making committees that affect the way in which health is delivered in our system.” Brian Griffith says it all when he writes, “A true leader is someone that can accomplish a task without being seen. They assemble a diverse group but are willing to do any task to guarantee success. A leader is willing to step up when no one else will. Jan Arnold is that true leader.” Already the recipient of EDA’s Outstanding Professional in Health Award and MAHPERD’s R. Tait Mckenzie and Health Teacher of the Year Awards, we are proud to recognize Jan Arnold with the 2013 EDA Honor Award.

Mr. Curt Martin – new hampshire

Curt Martin sits atop an impressive professional career, a mountain of service, and a pile of accolades but this quiet unassuming marvel gets great things done while drawing very little attention to

himself. Curt retired from New Hampshire’s Hopkinton’s School district after 31 inspiring years of physical education teaching and 26 years of high school coaching. He continues to coach, now in his 5th year at NHTI Community College. While we recognize him as a physical educator and coach, Curt’s influence and leadership extended to his whole school and community. Curt served as President of the Hopkinton Education Association for five years and Gene White shares with us that during Curt’s 18 years on the Hopkinton Education Association Negotiation Committee, he helped to “negotiate eight contracts that protected the rights and benefits of the district teachers. Over the years, they were able to bargain many innovative and cutting edge concepts that made it easy to attract and maintain a high quality staff for the students in Hopkinton.” In 2003 his entire school honored him for his

excellence by naming him the Susan Pisinski Elementary Teacher of the Year. Five years later, the Department of Education teamed with NHAHPERD to bestow on Curt the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award (The “ED”ies) for Meritorious Achievement. On the soccer field and basketball court, Coach Martin has inspired hundreds of young people, received a number of awards and recently enjoyed top honors when in 2010 he was installed into the NH Interscholastic Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame.Mr. EDA, Curt Martin has held leadership roles for many years. He started as President of NHAHPERD (1999-2001) and then served as the NH representative on the EDA Council for Services (2001-2003). From there he was quickly elevated to Vice President for Physical Education (2003-2005), then Vice President of Recreation ((2006-2007) and is presently Vice President for Physical Activity & Recreation as well as NHAPERD President. Perhaps this next year an EDA Presidency awaits him, as he has accepted a nomination to run. Lynn Johnson provides us one last insight to Curt’s character, “The Honor Award, however, is not solely about what you volunteer for, but more importantly if that commitment is fulfilled with integrity and good character. Curt is someone that can be depended on to do what he says he is going to do, and does it well. He is thoughtful, has a high degree of integrity, and cares deeply about those he works with and those he serves.” We proudly honor Curt Martin with the 2013 EDA Honor Award.
