March 17, 2016

Greetings!

Our Organization

Since 1987, the University of the Philippines Task Force Arki (UP TFA) has

dedicated itself to the service of the Filipino people and to the development of

awareness to the public regarding the urban poor, housing situations, and

related issues. As the only service-oriented organization in the UP Diliman College

of Architecture, it gives assistance to underprivileged communities by having

immersions, house builds, talks, cleanups, tree-planting events, and workshop

seminars on housing solutions and other practical skills.

Our Invitation

Every semester, the University Student Council of the University of the Philippines

Diliman (UP USC) conducts a campus-wide Alternative Classroom Learning

Experience (ACLE). For this semester’s ACLE, UP TFA has chosen to hold a

seminar entitled “Heroes: Beyond the Borders of the Profession” which will be

held on March 31, 2016 (Thursday) from 1:00pm-5:00pm in Room 105-105a, UP

College of Architecture Building 2, University of the Philippines Diliman. The

seminar shall feature artists that have dedicated their profession to service that encompasses all fields with the common ideal of bettering the world. This ACLE

aims to promote service, advocacy, and leadership in one's profession.

In light of this, UP TFA would like to invite your organization to become an

organization partner for the said event. Attached in this letter are the proposed

organization partner benefits and responsibilities for your perusal. Kindly send us

a response on or before March 24, 2016 with your organization logo. Should you

have any questions or concerns, we would be glad to set up a meeting

regarding this, or you may contact the undersigned below, or send us an email

at [email protected].

Thank you for your kind attention. We hope that events like these may remind

the most brilliant of all minds the responsibility of giving back. We look forward to

have you as our partner in this event.

ACLE CONCEPT PAPER

HEROES: BEYOND THE BORDERS OF PROFESSION

On the 31st day of March this year, the University of the Philippine Task Force will hold

its Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE) which echoes the strong

foothold of the organization: service. Service that is not to be confined within the

borders of a field of expertise as a study and practice, but to be taken in its widest

sense - service that encompasses all fields with the common ideal of bettering the

world.

Heroes: Beyond the Borders of Profession will feature speakers who use their line of

profession not for the sole dedication for money and glory. These people include

journalists that fight for truth, architects that fight for heritage, artists who fight for the

oceans and seas, writers who fight for the environment – the opportune event invites

people who have created from the fragments and elements of the human spirit and

compassion, leaps and achievements never seen before.

The idea and the goal of the whole event is to not only recognize the speakers and

allude them the title heroes, but more importantly to recognize their advocacies and

work. The event, aside from showing these lifelong advocacies and work to the

audience, will be a pinnacle to enable the speakers to be listened to by young men

and women aspiring for their respective fields who have or may have not yet

decided to do the same line of work, a lifestyle of both agony and hardship.

As students of the University of the Philippines, we are mandated to serve. Although it

is given, because of the present status quo of students acquiring knowledge from the

premier university in the country for personal gain, it is a sad truth that what is

expected of an “Iskolar ng Bayan” has become illusory, no longer an expected

reality, but an eluded ideal. We hope that events like these may remind the most

brilliant of all minds the responsibility of giving back.

This event will show service in its many forms, that it is not only the stereotyped way of

serving the less fortunate by temporary programs with lacking projections for

sustenance. It will show service that is toiled with hard work, not given in numbered

big heaps but constantly like one’s lifetime; service that is not a one-time thing, but

one that plans and projects; service that ensures the Filipino people will not just

endure but prevail – prevail and attain truth, express and experience their culture

through the built environment, and live in a world their children can inherit.

Service may just be the by-product of pursuing art or science or any field of interest

but in its deepest sense, it is profoundly an art that society can never live without, and

what the young UP scholar should produce. The University of the Philippines Task Force

Arki, in this alternative classroom experience, will build another environment that

builds people, an environment which inspires the Iskolar ng Bayan, to give the service

the Filipino nation deserves.
