Addressing and attracting our target audience

Typical Sci Fi Audience

• The typical audience for a conventional sci fi film is males between the ages of 18 and 29

• My media product is less conventional than most typical sci fi films, in that there is a heavy focus on storyline and mood, as opposed to the conventional focus on special effects, advanced technology, and fast paced action scenes.

• I feel as though the shift from the conventional focuses of science fiction films widens our audience- it is less male centric, and so invites females to watch it, therefore narrowing the gender gap.

Young Males• The title of my product is concise and simple. This almost blunt title is

attractive to young males, as many products targeted towards this group are as simple and succinct as this.

• Although there has been a focus shift from the typical conventions of contemporary sci fi films, I feel as though my film is still attractive to young males.

• My representation of males, through the protagonist, made this product more relatable for young males. The use of typically ‘stylish’ clothes, for example the plaid shirt, helps to attract this particular group, as it appeals to their sense of style.

• How we dressed our clones plays a significant part in the attraction of a young male audience. Our use of uniform (all black) is reminiscent of the movie I, Robot, and so, young males may feel that my product is as good as that, therefore attracting them.

• The protagonist of this media product is a 17 year old male, therefore making the film relatable and engaging to young males.

Young Females• The use of non sexualised female characters is attractive to a

young female audience- they are not given unrealistic standards of beauty to conform to, as they are focused on the storyline. I feel as though this is refreshing for the sci fi genre.

• If we believe the typical stereotypes, the exclusion of fast paced action scenes and violence within my media product should make it more appealing to young females. However, as mentioned, this is a stereotypical and outdated view, as many females enjoy sci fi-action movies.

• Although the audience to my media product would likely be predominantly male, I feel as though it is more attractive to young females than most sci fi films.
