About this Series

The series “Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing” contains publications on theory, applications, and design methods of Intelligent Systems and Intelligent Computing. Virtually all disciplines such as engineering, natural sciences, computer and information science, ICT, economics, business, e-commerce, environment, healthcare, life science are covered. The list of topics spans all the areas of modern intelligent systems and computing.

The publications within “Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing” are primarily textbooks and proceedings of important conferences, symposia and con-gresses. They cover significant recent developments in the field, both of a founda-tional and applicable character. An important characteristic feature of the series is the short publication time and world-wide distribution. This permits a rapid and broad dissemination of research results.

Foreword

It is a great honor for us to welcome you to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the First International Workshop on Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks for Smart Cities. Vehicular communication is a key technology in intelligent transportation systems. For many years, the academic and industrial research communities have been investigating these communications in order to improve efficiency and safety of future transportation. Vehicular networking will offer a wide variety of applica-tions, including safety and infotainment. It is envisioned that future communica-tive vehicles will evolve in a more intelligent environment, also known as smart cities. In this context, the interaction between vehicles and intelligent infrastruc-tures will influence each other, to achieve their targets. Not only would car drivers travel in an efficient and safe manner but the smart cities would also offer the best living conditions for citizens by reducing air and noise pollutions for the inhabit-ants, and reduce traffic congestion with a better traffic information system for cars. Efficient infrastructures for interaction between vehicles and smart cities is natu-rally needed to reach these goals.

IWVSC 2014 aims at providing a forum to bring together people from both academia and industry, to discuss recent developments in vehicular networking technologies and their interaction with future smart cities, in order to promote fur-ther research activities and challenges. We hope you will find the technical pro-gram and the keynote talk very beneficial.

Producing a conference is always a team effort involving many volunteers and we would like to thank the team that made IWVSC 2014 possible. In par-ticular, we are greatly indebted to our Technical Program Committee members who worked hard to produce a comprehensive, high-quality program. The work-shop received 12 submissions of which 7 full papers were accepted for final presentation. In addition, IWVSC features one keynote speech and one invited talk on some important issues for VANETs, namely IPv6 use in VANETs and security issues.
