Gen tl emen :
In accordance with section 2279 of the California Food and Agriculture
Code, the 1974 Crop Report for Stanislaus County is hereby submitted.
The total gross income is estimated ~o have been $426,581,000. It is
emphasized that this figure represents gross income only, and does not
indicate net income.
Although the 1974 gross income was 12.4 percent above that of 1973, and
is a new higlh for the County, operational, production and marketing
costs are also at record levels. Labor, fuel, feed, fertilizer andpesticide costs have had a serious affect on net incomes.
Moreover, many commodities were subject to drastic reductions in market
values. The market prices received for nine major commodities averaged
32 percent below those received in 1973, and thJ~ of course had a
further impact on net incomes.
The County’s ten leading commodities in 1974 were:
Milk, allChickens, all
Egg, chicken, all

L. T. Wallace, DirectorCalifornia Department of Food and Agriculture
and
The Honorable Board of SupervisorsStanislaus County
Gentlemen:
The Stanislaus County Agricultural Crop Report for 1975 is hereby submitted.
Farm income in 1975 was approximately $14,000,000 below 1974. This loss was
due primarily to lower prices received by farmers. Decreases ~4ore noted in
field crops, fruit and nut crops, livestock and poultry, and livestock and
poultry products. Some increases were seen in vegetable crops, seed crops, nursery products and apiary products.
The County’s 1975 gross farm income is estimated to have been $395,418,990.
It is emphasized that this figure represents gross income only. Operation-al and production costs increased steadily, limiting net income.
The County’s ten leading commodities in 1975 were:
Milk, all
Chickens, allEggs, chicken, all
Cattle and calves, all
Peaches, all
Tomatoes
Almonds
Alfalfa
Apricots
Walnuts

Richard E. Rominger e Director
California Department of Food and Agriculture
and
The Honorable Board of SupervisorsStanislaus County
Gentlemen:
The Stanislaus County Crop Report for 1976 is hereby submitted. Gross farm in-
come is estimated to be $424,884,660, an increase of 6.9 percent over the 1975
estimate. The gain is attributed primarily to nut crops and to livestock and
poultry products.
Many individual farmers suffered significant financial loss, particularly live-
stock producers and fruit and vegetable growers. Collectively, gross income
to these farmers was approximately $17,000,000 below 1975. The continuingdrought, strikes in the freezer and cannery industries, and unseasonal rains
late in the summer resulted in some reduced yields, unharvested acreage and, in
some cases, poorer quality in field and vegetable crops.
The number of cattle sold rose by 27,100 head because drought conditions forced
the early sale of herds. In spite of the volume, however, gross income was
down because animals were sold before attaining full weight and the increased
number of sales depressed prices.r
It must be emphasized that the estimates represent gross farm income only. Net
incomes in many cases were drastically affected by the adverse conditions.
The County’s ten leading :ommodities in 1976 were:
Milk, all
Chickens, allEggs, chicken, all

Richard E. Rominger, Director
California Department of Food and Agricultureand
The Honorable Board of SupervisorsStanislaus County
Gentlemen:
The Stanislaus County Crop Report for 1977 i~ hereby submitted. The totalgross farm income is estimated to have been $500,042,490, an increase of 18
percent over the 1976 estimate. This gain is principally attributed to fruit
and nut crops, particularly almonds, apricots, grapes, peaches and walnuts.
Other significant increases were seen in dry beans, poultry, tomatoes and milk
production.
Much of the increase reflects the upward trend of nearly all commodity values,
plus a return to relatively normal production of some crops following the
strikes and unseasonal rains during the harvest periods of 1976. Overall
drought conditions were present during both years but, except for cattle and
rangeland, this had less of an impact during 1977. Crops appeared to emerge,
develop and produce in excellent condition throughout the season. This was
partially due to the use of new or deepened wells, which permitted adequate
irrigation in most areas despite reduced deliveries of canal water.
The County’s ten leading commodities in 1977 are listed below. Figures in
parentheses indicate standings in 1976.
i. Milk, all (i) $111,887,000
2. Chickens, all (2) 59,178,000
3. Eggs, chicken, all (3) 46,121,000
4. Almonds (5) 41,732,000
5. Cattle and calves (4) 29,061,000
6. Peaches, all (6) 28,557,000
7. Walnuts (8) 28,492,000
8. Tomatoes (7) 20,713,000
9. Grapes, all (9) 19,290,000
i0. Beans, dry, all (12) 15,843,000
It must be emphasized that the estimates represent gross farm income only.Net incomes, as always, were affected by the rising costs of production, higher
prices on farm supplies and equipment, labor, and other costs.
We wish to express our appreciation to the many persons who contributed to the
preparation of this report.
