PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The AGM of the Chamber of Commerce was held last Wednesday at the offices of LJ Hooker.

ElEctED unopposED wERE:President: Judy Pope – Cutcliffe Property DuralVice President: Diana Paton – Adelphi PrintingTreasurer: Peter Colusso – LJ Hooker Dural/CherrybrookSecretary: Judy Armstrong – Round Corner ConveyancingExecutive: Peter Dawson – Peter Dawson & Associates, John Leckie, Elizabeth Pellinkhof – Hills Grammar School Executive.

Many thanks to Geoff Starr from the NSW Business Chamber who also attended the AGM as the returning officer.

The 2016 executive went on to Lombardo’s restaurant for dinner and enjoyed a sensational meal.

The Chamber is facing a challenging year with so many new developments proposed nearby and adjoining other existing centres. We will be striving to represent the existing businesses in the area for positive outcomes which will benefit the area as a whole. We will also be lobbying for the roads in and out of the area to be upgraded to deal with the increased traffic flow which is only going to worsen with all the residential development in the North West.

The proposed amalgamations of the two local councils the Chamber deals with is only going to add further frustrations for the Chamber as the councils focus on fighting for their futures instead of dealing with local issues. The state government seems to be determined for the merge of Kuringai and Hornsby Councils and also Hills and Hawkesbury Councils. This will not change the dilemma the Chamber has always had of having to deal with two councils.

It seems like it is going to be a big year all around for the Chamber. Thanks to the rest of the executive that have been elected and I Iook forward to working with you all over the next twelve months.

Dooral Roundup – March 20164

It was great to see the launch of the Hawkesbury-Hills Student Leadership Programme organised for March 3rd at the Hawkesbury Race Club in Clarendon.

he launch will be attended by local member Dominic Perrottet MP and the Premier of NSW the Hon Mike Baird MP.

Over the course of the Programme students will be mentored by some of Australia’s finest leaders including this year’s patron, Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Mark Donaldson, NSW Premier Mike Baird, Commonwealth Bank CEO Ian Narev and Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti.

The Programme will culminate in the students undertaking a service project as an alternative to “schoolies” week at the end of the year. This year students will work on a service project alongside members of an indigenous community here in Australia.

Previous participants have said that the mentors and service project inspired them to act responsibly, hold true to their convictions, care for others, serve the broader community and persevere through the challenges that come with embarking on post school life.

What an inspiring project and great to see our State Member and Premier supporting and being involved in.

COVER STORY

Students get a hands-on experience in a living, interactive and stimulating environment with learning opportunities that indoor classrooms just can’t provide.

indergarten students search for butterflies and bugs, Year 7 students are working with the alpacas, the Cattle

Show Team are busy preparing cows, calves and steer for the Royal Easter Show and Primary Industry students are preparing for the Castle Hill Show - highlighting the latest development at the school - a commercial aquaponics facility.

“Outdoor learning is a major feature of life at Northholm” said Principal Lynne Guthridge. “Whether it’s Maths … how much does the steer weigh? or Science … how do we measure the PH of the water in the dams? or Geography … what part of the world do alpacas come from? students approach learning all these subjects with a real sense of enthusiasm and interest” she said.

Primary Industries teacher Stellina Trestrail said “Our outdoor classrooms offer hands-on learning that really improves on what we do in the classroom”. “Students can learn so much from first-hand observations” she said. “A chicken scratching in the garden can instantly promote questions such as … What does it feed on? What is its life cycle? How is this animal important to the eco system?”

Former student and 2014 Agriculture Captain Regan Parle, now studying Animal Science at Charles Sturt University said “Northholm helped me discover and follow my passion – a passion for working with animals”. After a successful first year at Sydney University, Regan has transferred to Charles Sturt University.

“My goal is to get in to Veterinary Science” he said. “At Charles Sturt I will be working with large animals” he said, “animals like the cattle we got to look after and take to shows when I was at Northholm.

Hills Community Care celebrated 25 years of operation this week with a civic reception at the Council Chambers.

ills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne praised the service which began

in 1991. HCC is co-ordinated by The Hills Shire Council and run by staff and many volunteers and funded by Federal Government grants. The service provides a range of services to aged, frail and disabled residents. “This is a real milestone celebration for what is one of the most valuable and effective services offered by The Hills Shire Council and our very dedicated army of volunteers,” Mayor Byrne said. “Staff and volunteers deliver healthy meals, drive people to their doctor’s appointments, take them on day trips and social outings, mow lawns, keep gardens flourishing, clean gutters, carry out home improvements and much, much more.”

The establishment of HCC in 1991 was part of a co-ordinated effort by various community groups to unite services like Meals on Wheels and

Hornsby Shire Council is appealing to residents to be careful what they put in their bins after a garbage truck caught fire and its load had to be dumped on the street in Cherrybrook.

he driver was nearing the end of his collection route today when he noticed smoke coming from the back

of the truck. He climbed on top of the truck and used the fire extinguisher in an attempt to put the fire out, then pulled into a resident’s driveway and used their hose. When that didn’t work he drove to a quiet road alongside Edward Bennett Park and tipped the load onto the street, where

firefighters came and extinguished the blaze. It’s unclear what caused the fire, though the likely culprit

is a car battery or chemicals that should not have been placed in the bin. “I urge all residents to think carefully about what they put in their bins, as making the wrong decision can place our waste collectors in real danger,” Mayor Russell said. Items that should not be placed in the red bin include hazardous materials, chemicals, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, car batteries, hot ash and liquid waste such as paints or oils.

A major upgrade of the Glenhaven Rural Fire Station has been given the green light, with Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne describing it as a win for the community.

ore than $200,000 has been committed to the project from the NSW Rural Fire Service, Council

and generous donations from members of the community at several fundraising events including the Glenhaven Christmas Carols.

The upgrade will provide increased clearance and additional space to cater for the station needs and larger sized vehicles. The Glenhaven Brigade will be better

equipped to service the growing community well into the future. Mayor Byrne said that The RFS was one of the most important organisations in The Hills. “The expression ‘face the fire’ is often used to describe someone who is confronting a major threat and our RFS volunteers do exactly that when they put their lvies on the line to protect us,” Mayor Byrne said. “Not only do they risk their lives but they do so out of their own time, outside of working hours when they would usually be with their family.”

“Council is proud to contribute to the upgrade of the RFS Station at Glenhaven and we hope this better enables them to fight fires in the future.”

Hills football (soccer) clubs have received their allocations for the winter season, with a number of ground changes coming into effect which better reflect the requirements of clubs.

ouncil’s General Manager Dave

Walker said that sporting fields have come under increasing pressure over the last few years and the allocations sent out today were the first completed since a major revamp of the allocation process. “The demand for our sporting fields has never been greater and is a reflection of a number of factors including our booming population, the growth in over-35 sport, the increasing popularity of group personal training, private football academies and non-traditional sports,” Mr Walker said.

Although new sporting complexes were on the way including Caddies Creek Reserve, the Balmoral Road Release Area and the Arnold Avenue Release Area; action was needed now. “Some clubs may be disappointed by the changes, and they can contact me if they have any issues. But these allocations are based on numbers and throughout the year, Council will conduct thorough audits of these grounds compared to fixtures to ensure that clubs actually have the player numbers they say they have.”

Mr Walker called on clubs work co-operatively to support the growth of their game in The Hills.

The Galston branch of the Bendigo Bank continues to support and assist worthy causes and local associations and schools.

y the end of this year close to $2 million will have been donated to the local community. Last month

the Bank’s Board of Directors agreed to continued support of the Hills Hawk Rugby League Club, funded a stove for the Galston Girl Guides and extended monetary assistance to the Hornsby Heights Football Club. In addition the Bank is in discussion with Galston High School to assist in landscaping the school precinct and working with meals on wheels to reintroduce hot meals in the area.

At the end of last year the Bank’s Branch Manager Garry Mangan instigated a Christmas program to spread some Christmas Joy and Spirit throughout the Galston shops. The local primary schools were invited to sing Christmas carols at the front of the Bank during the lead up to Christmas. All schools received a $200 donation to the school or the school’s charity

and local shoppers enjoyed the feeling of Christmas and the Christmas Carols. Sais Gary, “we hope to make this a yearly event and invite schools to register for this year’s Christmas Carols, and we will continue to offer donation”.

Baulkham Hills is full of high achievers, and the last month has provided another five names to add to the list.

est Pennant Hills resident Shubha Kumar was acknowledged for her work within the local

Indian community as the Baulkham Hills Woman of the Year. Shubha works to help Indian migrants integrate within the community and to inform migrant women of their rights under Australian law. Shubha also works with local Police to create a strong relationship between local migrant communities and law enforcement.

Speaking of the local Police, Superintendent Robert Critchlow was recently acknowledged for his work by Rotary with the Paul Harris fellowship. Rob has been in charge of The Hills Local Area Command for a little over two years and has presided over an enormous fall in domestic violence within the Hills Shire. Rob has also focussed on protecting older members of our community by running several workshops, engaging with our seniors to alert them to the risks of elder abuse.

I also congratulate Lachlan Smith, Bailey Harris and Ben Kahane of 2nd Baulkham Hills Scout Group on their elevation to the ranks of Queen’s Scouts. All three venturer unit members have provided outstanding leadership within the 2nd Baulkham Hills group and their awards are well deserved.

If you know of high achievers within the Baulkham Hills community and wish to see them acknowledged, simply contact my office.

The NSW Business Chamber is pleased to advise that Professor Trevor Cairney OAM has been elected unopposed as its new President.

rofessor Cairney succeeds Tony Dormer, who will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President.

Nola Watson has been elected Deputy President. As an academic, Professor Cairney has been a researcher and writer on education, training and regional development. He has contributed to business and industry in many ways including directorships and chairmanships of various technology-based companies and industry bodies, the judging of industry awards and as an advocate for the economic and social development of Greater Western Sydney.

“I would like to thank the NSW Business Chamber members for placing their faith in me, and I also want to acknowledge the great work of my predecessor, Tony Dormer.” Professor Cairney said.

“The NSW Business Chamber celebrates 190 years of operations in 2016, which highlights the long standing role that we have played in being the link between business, government and the broader community.

“With membership now pushing the 20,000 mark, it is clear that there is a continued need to provide businesses with the support, expertise and representation to continue to grow and prosper.

“I’m looking forward to the NSW Business Chamber continuing to play its influential role with the policy makers from all sides of politics, without fear or favour.

KEEp youR KERBsIDE BulKy wAstE sAFE FRoM snAKEsIn this warm weather snakes are often looking for shady spots to keep cool, including in the piles of rubbish put onto the kerbside for Hornsby Shire Council to collect as part of its Bulky Waste Collection in rural area. Residents in rural areas are urged to take steps to deter snakes by mowing the grass around their collection spot before putting their bulky waste items out on the kerb for collection and by stacking their bulky waste piles neatly to reduce crevices for snakes.

NSW Premier Mike Baird should be congratulated for showing he is willing to consider alternative council boundary proposals.

he NSW Premier has shown he is listening to the concerns of the councils and residents within his own

electorate and I now ask he does the same for Sydney’s North West. The Hills Shire Council is the subject of two proposals; one to take our suburbs south of the M2 and give them to an expanded Parramatta City Council and the second proposal is leaving the rest of The Hills to merge with Hawkesbury City Council

There are longstanding communities of interest that stand to be severed by the illogical boundary proposed. As it stands, the M2 will become the new council boundary, cutting off suburbs like North Rocks, Carlingford, Winston Hills, Northmead and parts of Baulkham Hills. Many members of the community I have spoken to have expressed the fact that they have become disillusioned with the local government reform process when in reality it is absolutely necessary.

It is my firm belief, and the belief of thousands of Hills residents, that exiling our suburbs south of the M2 is not in the best interests of the residents and businesses in those suburbs.

REPRESENTING OUR AREA

It is likely you have seen a flurry of news coming out of Canberra over the last few weeks.

ome major announcements have taken place, most significantly with the Treasurer announcing new

measures to tackle tax evasion and the Defence White Paper. I have always been of the belief that foreign investment is vital for the Australian economy, but only if it is in the national interest. The Treasurer’s new measures will help to safeguard the national interest by making sure foreign parties pay their fair share. At its most severe, the Treasurer will be able to force parties refusing to follow their obligations to divest from their investment. This will allow Australian investors doing the right thing a new playing field.

On a final note, many of you have probably seen some of the discussions about the Safe Schools Coalition. This is a program established by the previous Labor government in an attempt to help LGBT students who may be experiencing bullying over their sexuality. After careful review I, along with many of my colleagues, had concluded this program had gone much too far. I think it is important we are a tolerant society, and that we take a stand against bullying. However the material content in this program contained information that is inappropriate for school aged children.

It is important that when we educate, we draw an appropriate line between educational content and the jurisdiction of parents.

Preparations to start filling the Hornsby Quarry with excavated spoil from the NorthConnex roadway will commence following the approval of the project’s Environmental Impact Statement.

he spoil will be temporarily stockpiled before being loaded onto a conveyer and put into the empty quarry.

The placement of fill in the quarry will allow Hornsby Shire Council to continue with plans to re-develop the site as a recreation area. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform a barren disused hole into a 45 hectare parkland.

The project is proposed to be carried out over about 33 months and will start in early 2016.The site will be subject to on-going audits and site inspections by the Department’s compliance officers to ensure the company is adhering to its consent conditions. The

Department can issue the highest on-the-spot fines in the country for breaches of conditions. Companies can also be prosecuted in court for breaching conditions, with the most severe breaches attracting fines of up to $5 million.

NSW continues to have the strongest jobs market in the nation.

fter a solid 2015 when NSW created more than half of the jobs added nationally, the figures for

January have softened slightly. Despite that, NSW’s jobless rate continued to outperform the national average and has done so for the last 26 months. The ABS data showed that NSW employment increased by 4.7 per cent through the year to January – the highest among the states for the seventh consecutive month and well above the national result of 2.6 per cent. 300,500 jobs have been created in NSW since April 2011 – more than 80 per cent higher than the next largest state increase. This strong economic result comes on the back of record investment in infrastructure across NSW. Our $20 billion plan to build new schools, hospitals, roads, rail and cultural facilities from the lease of the Poles and Wires is in addition to a record budget investment in infrastructure over the current term. There is now widespread proof that our infrastructure plan will continue to lift productivity, boost the economy and provide the services the community relies on day in and day out. The NSW Government recently completed the TransGrid transaction, delivering gross proceeds of $10.258 billion, and is currently in the process of partially leasing Ausgrid.

We will continue to work hard to keep our economy strong by building the infrastructure the State needs, delivering the services our community relies on and creating more employment opportunities.

When you ask a new urban mapping app for directions, it gives you two choices: the “boring” route and a longer path that lets you explore an interesting part of the city you might not otherwise ever discover.

t offers an alternative approach to pedestrian

navigation through the city by including a sensitivity about what’s nearby, to bring back pleasure to urban walking,” says Martin Traunmueller, a PhD candidate at University College London who designed the new app, called Likeways.

While the shortest path in many cities might use larger streets with more traffic, the meandering route tends to take less-traveled roads. “A nice coffee shop, a gallery, or other places of interest could be just one minute away in a less busy, but more pleasant side road, but might stay in the dark by following suggested routes,” he says.

The app lets you enter your destination and what you’re interested in seeing along the way (right now, this is limited to restaurants, bars, shops, museums, and art galleries, but more choices are coming). It’s possible to turn off the pins marking points of interest, so there’s more of sense of discovery as you walk.

It’s designed for anyone to use, whether they already know a neighbourhood or they’re traveling in a new city.

Dooral Roundup – March 201626

Well with all these unusually hot days, we can say that summer is well and truly here. But let’s not automatically switch on the air con, and instead, try to be a little more creative this summer and shrink those ever-rising electrical bills.

pening your windows when the air is cooler outside is one way to stay cool. It seems obvious, but often

people keep the air con blazing when it is not generally needed.

Turning ceiling fans on is another affordable way to keep cool this summer. While the fan won’t make the room cooler, it will definitely make it feel cooler by speeding sweat evaporation.

Installing a whirly bird is an effective and affordable way of keeping the house cooler. Whirly birds will offer you the combined benefits of moving air, like a ceiling fan, and the pulling of cooler air from the outside.

On hot summer days, close the blinds. This will help prevent heat pouring into your house and will save you having the air con running all day.

If you are not using a particular room in your house, shut the air con vents off to that room. This way, you aren’t cooling wasted space and more cool air will be available to fill the rooms you are using.

Turning off lights is a cost effective way to keeping the house cool. If you don’t need a light, turn it off. All light bulbs generate heat as a by-product of producing light. Also, unplug or switch off unused electronics.

Try implementing some of these ideas and save yourself some money and the environment.

Pool fencing is about to come back into the news with the final deadline for the introduction of the new pool fencing inspection regime.

he deadline for these laws has been extended twice due to problems with the lack of qualified

inspectors. Despite this issue not being resolved it is expected that the new laws will come into effect on the 29th of April this year.

This will mean that all private residential pools will need to have a certificate of compliance prior to the property being leased or sold after the 29th of April. These inspections may not only be hard to get done due to the lack of registered certifiers but it is expected that the cost of getting the inspection done could be as high as $350 to $400 for the first inspection. If further inspections are required due to the fence not being compliant on the first visit the subsequent visits could cost up to half this again.

To make sure that you don’t get a nasty surprise when your inspection is done you can do a self check on the compliance of your pool fence by going to http://www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au/checklists

Pool safety is vitally important and to minimise the chances of an accidental drowning occurring, all pools must have a properly functioning pool safety barrier or fence and also have a current CPR sign on display at all times.

Come in to see us at Dural Poolsmart, SPASA NSW Pool Shop of the Year 2015, to help get your pool ready for swimming or like us on Facebook to get regular hints and tips on keeping your pool clean and clear all year.

I was reminded recently of one of the most interesting ladies I have ever met.

etty Archdale who before her death was voted one of Australia’s National Treasures built in adobe earth

home with her Brother Alexander at Crossland’s Rd Galston after retiring as the much loved Principal of 12 years at Abbotsleigh.

She named the property “Northis” based on the time it took to build – she said “Rome was not built in a day and Nor this”!!

I had the privilege of meeting and selling Betty’s property for her back in the early nineties in the first years of my career in Real Estate at L J Hooker Dural.

Its rewarding to reflect on such a life.> A Daughter of a militant suffragette and British Army Officer> Captained the first British Ladies Cricket Team to tour Australia [undefeated in 1934]> First Class Honours in Economics & Political Science[Canada]> Law Degrees London [ LLB & then LLM]> WW2 – Women’s Royal Navy Service [Singapore, Africa, Australia & Middle East ] – Awarded MBE> Headmistress at Abbotsleigh where she challenged girls to not conform but seek new horizons such as studying science and physics, attend plays and Jazz Concerts and discuss sacred topics such as race , drugs, abortion and politics. Learning to her was not just sitting in classrooms!> Member of the Senate at Sydney University> Much loved local resident Galston.

There is a lot more to the story than this recorded in “Betty Archdale, ‘Daughter of a Suffragette’ - published in 2002.

Reflections on Betty’s life remind me again that Real Estate is not just about PROPERTY it’s also about PEOPLE - sometimes extraordinary people!

After a long summer of getting some great use out of your garden lawn, it is time to start preparing your lawn for winter with some autumn lawn care.

utumn is the perfect time of year to start again with your lawn treatment because the soil temperature

is still warm enough to stimulate grass growth. The treatments depend greatly on the state it is in after the wear and tear it has undergone in the summer months.

Aeration is a cornerstone to having a well maintained lawn. This process is essentially spiking the lawn to allow for more air (and nutrients including water) to get to the grass roots. Areas of the lawn that get

heavy traffic in the summer will be very compacted and will need forking to break up the soil and improve the drainage when the rain starts to pour.

Once the lawn is flat and aerated it is the ideal time to put some top dressing down. Top dressing is a mixture of loam, sand and compost which helps strong root growth. At this time of year it is beneficial to mix in a sandy top dressing to absorb moisture and ensure it is rake in to the soil properly.

At Langlands Landscapes Supplies we have a full range of mulches, sand and gravels suitable for your garden. For further advise please call 9651 2102.

Dooral Roundup – March 201628

The Waddell Family has been a vital part of the history of our district for over 170 years, and has connections to many of the old families, such as Fagans, Roughleys, Hunts , Cusberts, Geelands ,Allens Knights and Johnsons.

wo brothers, William (b.1826) and James 11 (b.1840) came to this country with their parents, James and

Nancy and 3 sisters from County Monaghan in Ireland, arriving in October 1841. They firstly settled in the Hawkesbury district, and they earned their living as shingle cutters. Shingles were in much demand as a roofing material before iron became available. Eventually, by 1853 James saved enough to buy 100 acres for 100 pounds at Galston, where he established a productive citrus orchard. The first home was built in Lailors Lane (now Belbowrie Close, near Greenshades).

Over the years and several generations the Waddell family has increased in number, but many of them have stayed in the orcharding business. In the 1890’s the Dural-Galston area was the biggest citrus growing district in Australia. When the piped water supply became available after the Water tower in Galston Rd was built in the late 1930’s, it was possible to produce stone fruit, maturing in the summer. Now Persimmons (both the soft and hard varieties) are in big demand.

Many people will remember Ron and Vera Waddell, who lived next door to the Waddell Packing shed and shop, which was the best place to buy fresh fruit, particularly oranges all year round. They died only 13 days apart in 2009, and, unfortunately, most of the original Waddell property has now been sold.

“Norquay Farm”, a 10 acre property on Galston Road, is still in Waddell family hands. It is planted out with Persimmon trees. The name, Norquay, comes from one of the

many ancestors connected to the family.

Waddell Cottage, now within the grounds of Galston High School, was built in about 1866 by James 111 out of stone quarried from the site. The house has bedrooms up a staircase (hence the dormer window) and the kitchen is a separate building out the back. This was customary at the time, so that if there was a fire in the kitchen the whole house was not burnt down. James son, known as Old Jimmy”, never married and lived in the house until his death in 1969. The Department of Education acquired the property and it appeared that the Cottage would be demolished. Fortunately a group of local citizens got together and raised money to restore it. The school’s first English/ History teacher, Tom Richmond, played a significant role, and ensured that the Cottage was used as a valuable resource within the School.

At the next meeting of the Dural Historical Society on Saturday 12th March at 2pm, the guest speaker will be Andrew Phippen who will talk about Bass and Flinders. All welcome.

Are you using a professional horticulturist?

lant selection, proper plant health (an understanding of very expensive plant diseases), pest control and

an understanding of proper drainage and specific plant requirements, are just some of the issues that professional horticulturists are trained in. Every member of the Australian Institute of Horticulture is qualified and involved in various initiatives to keep their training up to date.

The use of the right professional can expedite the development of a balanced garden and avoid unnecessary wastage of resources. I would strongly recommend the use of a professional horticulturist such a Registered Horticulturist or member of the Australian Institute of Horticulture.

Wayne Van Balen is the current National President of the Australian Institute of Horticulture.
