What Are SAP Best Practices?

SAP is aware that customer satisfaction

does not only depend on functionality, but

also on reliable and proven businessprocesses and the effort it takes to

implement them.

Therefore, SAP has substantially invested in

designing and building a great set of

preconfigured, documented, and pretested

business processes that are tailored to your

customer’s industry and can be used as a

baseline for your customer’s implementation.

This is SAP’s experience in industry best

practices. This is ready-made business

processes already installed and available in

your system.

SAP’s years of experience have shown that customer satisfaction does not only depend on

functionality, but also on the effort and costs it takes to implement it. So we’ve created out-of-

the-box business processes that are installed and configured, and not created and customized

during implementation. The secret of this approach is in the 35 years of experience SAP has

working with the best companies in the world. We’ve taken that knowledge and adopted the

revolutionary approach of creating them once and deploying for all. This saves our clients

untold months in deployment and the obvious associated costs. This is achieved through:

SAP’s experience in industry best practices built in. Ready-made business processes are

already installed and available into your system.

SAP’s proven expertise in applying best practices to your organization smoothly, quickly, and easily. This is inherent in SAP Business All-in-One solutions.

SAP Best Practices are predesigned and preconfigured business processes that correspond

to cross-industry practices, but also to the specific profiles of companies—in particular,

industries and vertical markets. By starting with SAP Best Practices, the solution provider

can configure a ready-to-run system for an individual customer at a low cost. Implementation

time is reduced to weeks rather than months.

SAP Best Practices are provided to SAP partners, SAP Consulting, and customers at no

additional cost. They can be used as:

A flying start to establish a customer-specific business infrastructure, or to build a new SAPBusiness All-in-One solution

A reference for blueprinting or prototyping phases

A comprehensive representation of the generally accepted ways to manage, control, and execute

business processes in a specific industry or in certain business areas, for example, make-to-order

manufacturing

 A foundation for future growth

SAP Best Practices let you reduce implementation time by focusing on tailoring predefined

processes to the customer’s requirements, or extending the scope of the final solution with

typical interfaces to third-party applications, forms, reports, or additional SAP processes or

applications.

Download SAP Best Practices online from service.sap.com/swdc or order the CDs or DVDs

from service.sap.com/knowledgecat.

Current Global SAP Best Practices PortfolioExpanded Versions to Meet Your Industry and Geographic Needs

© SAP 2010

The reach of SAP Best Practices has expanded and will continue to grow in over 26

countries, with industry packages based primarily on SAP ERP. In key industries or regions

with high demand, we also incorporate additional SAP applications such as GTS for hightech, or Environment, Health and Safety for the chemical industry.

To see if an industry offering is available for your country in the latest SAP ERP release,

check the availability matrix on the SAP Best Practices Web site on the SAP Service

Marketplace at http://service.sap.com/BESTPRACTICES.

SAP also provides cross-industry offerings to allow projects to extend their use of SAP into

BI, CRM, SCM, SRM, HCM, Portal, and GRC. These are designed to be used either in a

first go-live system, or in an already live customer system. These offerings can be used byinstall-base customers in the upper midmarket as well, regardless of whether or not they

used SAP Best Practices in their ERP implementation.

The SAP help portal provides extensive information on all SAP Best Practices packages. To

evaluate their fit for your project, it is important to check on which SAP components and

releases they are based, how compatible they are with each other, and if they meet the local

requirements of your project. You can find more information at help.sap.com Æ Best

Practices.

Note: Even if an SAP Best Practices package is not available in the release or country

version you need, it is still worth evaluating the documentation and SAP Best Practices

tools, as they are accelerators in themselves.

There is a standard delivery structure of all SAP Best Practices:

Generally, SAP Best Practices consist of two components that are delivered in two DVDsets: Documentation and preconfiguration objects.

Documentation is what you need to set up a system, namely, a configuration guide. The

configuration guide is the description for the manual handling of settings. The scenario

documentation, or scenario overview, helps you to understand the process. You also receive the

business process documentation, which may help you go through the systems once they are setup. You may also use this as end-user training material.

Preconfiguration settings are encapsulated in BC Sets and eCATTs to import sample master data.

For test support after installation, SAP Best Practices deliver guided test procedures.

To support you in using SAP Best Practices more efficiently, we have designed and

developed a series of tools and highly responsive services that can be used through the

entire project life cycle, namely, positioning, implementing, going live, and supporting

productive operation.

You can find the availability matrix on the SAP Best Practices pages in the SAP Service

Marketplace. This is a Microsoft Excel sheet that contains information on the availability of

the different SAP Best Practices packages. For example, you can find information aboutwhether a package for a certain release level and country is planned or already released.

On the same Web site, you can also find you also find information about:

Demo and evaluation support, including demo systems, demo laptop, offline demos, and so on

Data migration based on SAP NetWeaver legacy system migration workbench

A number of other important topics that support you when working on SAP Best Practices projects

The SAP help portal, at help.sap.com, is another helpful source of information about which

baseline, industry, or cross-industry packages are available for which country and release.

When you select a package, you find information either from a business point of view, or

from an implementation and technical point of view. This can range from high-level

information to scenario documentation, right down to exact configuration guides and

technical information.

The advantage of this Web site is that it is public. This means that it can be accessed

anywhere and anytime you have Internet connection without needing a user or the

documentation DVD!

SAP Best Practices: Benefits

Save time

Use early prototypes to “show” vs. “tell” during

blueprinting. Identify only delta requirements, not total

requirements.

 Avoid reinventing the wheel—simply activate

preconfigured SAP Best Practices scenarios for common configuration options.

 Accelerate knowledge transfer

Ramp-up staff with a live prototype.

Use demo systems and scripts to review scenario

processes.

Leverage end-user training materials included in

SAP Best Practices.

Improve project predictability

Start with proven, quality content.

Limit hands-on configuration for a custom solution.

Blueprint with ease.

© SAP 2010

The benefits of using SAP Best Practices during a customer implementation are closely

linked, whether you are creating an SAP Business All-in-One solution based on SAP Best

Practices, or if you are deploying SAP Best Practices directly for a customer project. The

time savings resulting from using SAP Best Practices, coupled with the accelerated

knowledge transfer capabilities, directly contribute to improved project predictability.

The What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get approach of SAP Best Practices saves time from

endless workshops with the customer to identify business requirements. All you have to look

is for the deltas between the ready-made business processes and the customer’s specific

business needs.

When you use SAP Best Practices, you avoid not only the configuration, but also the lengthyand painful process of blueprinting and documenting it.

By using the prototype personalized for the customer and the solution maps even before

implementation starts, you have the opportunity to compare current working practices to the

SAP Best Practices. This brings the knowledge and the value proposition to the customer much earlier in the business cycle.

SAP Best Practices provide predefined training material that is ready to be used for your end-user training.

The unambiguous definition of the solution scope and the built-in implementation expertise

reduces the number of surprises you will encounter during the implementation phase and

during productive operation. This is what makes your solution safe and reliable.
