    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

    Aldinga On Display

Those of you who have been in the district for a few years

may remember the Aldinga On Display events held here in 2009 and 2011.

The Aldinga-Sellicks Alliance, in which ABRA participates,

is a collection of service providers and community groups

who provide services for our area. They meet bi-monthly, chaired by a council rep, to discuss and address the needs of

    the area.

One of the needs established in a 2008 survey was lack of knowledge of services in the area. The A. O. D. events were

set up to address this by having providers hold an open day

with stalls, entertainment and activities to showcase their

services. Families were encouraged to visit using a map and timetable, creating a great fun family-based outing.

These were very successful and with the number of new

residents and new providers in the area it is felt another event is warranted.

The Alliance has put in an application for a council grant to

hold another A.O.D. event in October this year. If successful, detailed planning will commence shortly.

State Government Fund My Idea Grants for the South (From Chris Picton MP - Member for Kaurna)

Grant applications for up to $50,000 can be proposed for projects which are specific to the southern area to

help tackle disadvantage and build community

resilience. You may like to consider projects that support new or ongoing employment, preparation for

    employment and community wellbeing.

Through the Fund My Idea grants program, all programs specific to the southern area that nominate

are listed on the YourSAy website

www.yoursay.sa.gov.au and members of the public can

then vote on which projects receive funding.

Please note the closing date for applications is

    Friday 10 April 2015

Readers may wish to visit the website and cast their vote.

Guest speaker: Chris Gregory from NBN Co will fill us in on the latest developments in that area including the imminent discontinuation of the copper wire service.

Please note our next General Meeting in April has a guest speaker from the NBN Co.

Some of you thought you were going to get fibre but now

dont know since the election. Some of you are about to be connected. Some are connected and will soon lose your copper

    connection.

So this is a good chance to find out where we are at and ask questions.

I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President / Editor

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be

accepted as part of our hard waste collection.

The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off

South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off

    their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury.

If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results.

They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available

at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.

    NEW U3A PROGRAMME.

To celebrate living in one of SA Premier Wine Regions, Aldinga U3A has added a new fixture to our already diverse programme.

This is: Weekend Lunches at the Vineyards. To enable members to enjoy with friends the wine and food available in the area. Aldinga U3A is here to provide mental and physical stimulation to local residents. There are no exams or homework studies, only

interest in living and enjoying life. Our programme varies from cycling or walking to Philosophy.

    WILLUNGA FAIR DAY

    WILL GO TO THE HEART

Originally planned as a one-off day as part of Willungas 175th anniversary celebrations in 2014, the Discover Willunga Fair was so incredibly successful, that

the Willunga Business and Tourism Association (WBTA) decided to make it an annual event.

In a change from last year, WBTA will be inviting

donations on the day. Together with any proceeds from the fair, this money will go towards purchasing an

automated external defibrillator (AED), which will be

stored at a central place in Willunga, for public use in the event of a health emergency. Such devices can provide the means for bystanders with little or no training to help save the life of a person suffering cardiac arrest.

The fair will be held on Sunday 3 May 2015, from 11 am

4 pm, at the Willunga Recreation Park. It will again provide an opportunity for all the clubs, organisations and businesses associated with Willunga to reach out to the

wider community. They will be able demonstrate their

activities, recruit new members, sell their products, and conduct fundraising if appropriate. Stalls are free for

community organisations and only $50 for businesses.

The local branch of the National Trust is planning a

display of railway memorabilia, including several model railway layouts. Historical railway films will be screened

in the Show Hall at various times during the day of the

fair. The committee is currently negotiating the appearance of some scale model working steam

locomotives and also plans to feature other old-time

modes of transport, such as horse-drawn carts and early motor vehicles.

There will be raffles, food stalls, entertainment and

come and try activities for all ages. Competitions will again be held to find the champion almond crackers, the

largest pumpkin and the most attractive roses in various

categories. Entry forms for the pumpkin competition pumpkin are available from Office & Image or Willunga

Physiotherapy. For rose competition entries, contact

    Jenny Richards on 0439 755 750.

The Discover Willunga Fair will be a family fun day,

with the focus squarely on all the wonderful things

available in Willunga. To book a stall,

    GEORGE CLOONEY COMING TO WILLUNGA

Fans of George Clooney, great music and fun films

should make a beeline to the Willunga Show Hall on April 11th to see the classic Coen Brothers film 'O

Brother Where Art Thou'. Set in America's south during

evening of food and fun, featuring a Southern Style BBQ,

an intermission Mississippi Barn Dance, cinema snacks and a bar. Special performances are planned by two ex-

citing and talented local groups, 'Mammy's Sinners and

Salvation Chorus' and 'Dapper Dan and the Daggy

    Bottom Boys'.

dience members dressing up and dancing, and everyone having a lot of fun. Cinemallunga's last show 'Grease'

sold out days in advance so make sure you get your hill-

billy gear together, organise some friends or cousins and buy your tickets early.

SEARCH FOR WW1 MEMORABILIA During World War 1, many local lads from Willunga and surrounding districts

were farewelled by the ladies of the Willunga Cheer-up Society and, if they were

fortunate enough to eventually return from the war zones, they received an enthu-

    siastic heroes welcome.

Newspaper reports of the time describe how the returned soldiers were treated to

a guard of honour formed by members of the Cheer-up Society. The ladies wore demure nurse-like white uniforms, with cape and veil, but that didnt stop them kicking up their heels at the social dances and sing-a-longs that followed the for-

mal speeches of welcome and congratulation.

The President of the Cheer-up Society, Mrs Longbottom, presented each soldier

with a gold medal in honour of his service, and to acknowledge his safe return.

Dvr Len Jacobs, Lance Corporal Libby Sibley Waye, Captain James Stanley

Malpas MC, and Privates James Blacker, Samuel Edward Worman, Walter

James Binney, John Patrick Flanigan, Walter Leaker, Wilfred Cornelius, Joseph Eric Everleigh Tregilgas and Francis Tool, all received medals, as did Corporal

Percival Henry Dunn and Privates John Alfred Henderson and Horace Milton

    Burford.

We are interested to know if anyone has one of these gold medals, perhaps as a

family heirloom. The role of the Cheer-up Society in Willunga is not well docu-

mented, so we are keen to find out more about this dedicated group of women and how they honoured our soldiers. If there are some family stories or recollec-

tions, we would love to hear them. Any information that current or former residents can provide for this project will

be most welcome. Please contact Brian Dempsey on mobile 0418807529 or

    email [email protected]

RSL CENTENARY SERVICE. The Willunga and District RSL,

During the service a big screen will be showing moments from Gallipoli

and personnel who served in the war.

The service will also include the Willunga Primary School choir and

    selected students talking about their

families involvements in past military conflicts and what it means to them.

After the service in the club rooms,

tea and coffee will be served along

with a 'Gun Fire Breakfast' in the pergola at the rear of the club rooms.

    FAITH WORKS

    Chris and Kay De Vries

A couple from Aldinga set off in April 2014 to help the

less fortunate in Malawi, Africa - at their own expense.

The gentleman who facilitated their entry into the country,

a local agent, managed to siphon off their house rental money into his own pocket, cancelled their tenancy, and to

add insult to injury he gave them three days to leave the

country! Oh, yes, he also hadn't arranged their work permit

    in the first place.

Mysteriously their bank account was frozen and when they

tried to sell their car as a last resort, they found out - yes - this man had registered their car in his name!

An impossible situation? But... being people of faith they declared, "He, (God) will never leave you nor forsake you

and He will always provide a way through." And a series

of what we call "God-incidences" followed.

Firstly, they found a friend indeed through the Christian

church they attended, who gave them rent free accommo-dation for two months, utilities included. Then they met a

very high ranking immigration official who sorted out

their complicated affairs including safe passage to Austra-lia and re-entry.

To deal with the car problem one of the country's top legal minds took on their case free of charge. This led to an

offer by another NGO where, on their return in late March

Kay will teach maths and English, and Chris will care for the disabled (usually hidden people), his forte.

Things have worked out much better than they would have under the first arrangement. In Australia they attend

Its quiet here today. The Tour Down Under is over (well done Oz). The Summer holidays have ended, the rentals and B-and-Bs are empty again. The one at the back, visible from my kitchen window, no

longer harbours the quartet of kids who made their presence heard during the long school holidays. Is there a

more beautiful sound than children at play?

Sensibly the family has not bothered with a water-thirsty garden. Theres still a bit of local scrub backing onto our simple wire fence. A great place for the age-old game of

hide and seek. A childs voice counting the minute then Coming-Ready or Not! Kids emerging from under a boobialla and rushing home. Lots of excitement, lots of laughter, an occasional Thats No Fair. All carefree. I find myself thinking of other children, other lands, other lives if you could call it living. Yes its still hiding. But not for fun. This hiding is for self preservation. The

seekers are brutal killers with no respect for the sanctity of humanity. Heavily armed, they are often indoctrinated

by so called laws beyond our understanding. So today, back at school (for girls too) therell be time for games as well as seeking Answers. All those hows and whys. Precious days. Enjoy them. Respect them. Ill be listening for your laughter next holidays.

The very popular Aldinga Bay Bowling Club Nightowls bowling season came to an exciting conclusion recently with some very strong competition from all teams, and with Green Nights emerging as the Division One Winners - starring Jamie and friends. Division two winners were Brotherly Love.

All Nightowls bowlers enjoyed the friendly weekly night Competition played under lights and its anticipated that next years competition will be even more popular. Following a successful student development pro-gram in 2014, Aldinga Bay Bowling Club Members Alan and Dave have taken the time again this cur-rent semester, to coach a group of nine Year 12 students from Southern Vales Christian School in the rudiments of lawn bowls. Encouraging team competitions of pairs, triples and fours, and with one on one guidance as well, stu-dents are learning many of the technical aspects and skills required to play the game. Approximately 30 Zonta members and their part-ners from the Southern Vales and Noarlunga Club recently enjoyed a light dinner and social bowling evening under the lights at ABBC and some potentially talented bowlers showed off their prow-ess. The Bowling Clubhouse, with complete catering fa-cilities and greens is available for hire at very rea-sonable rates for social and/or corporate groups, and family occasions.

For details on hiring, or for information about becoming an Aldinga Bay Bowler,

contact the Club on 8557 7467 or come to the Club on Tuesday,

Thursday or Saturday afternoon for a roll up.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER 2015 saw an eclectic gathering of many faith traditions.

There were hand massages, beautiful songs, inspiring

prayers and messages, which encompassed this years featured country the Bahamas. Not forgetting the tropical

food including fishcakes and pineapple desserts.

A sacred space was created which featured the national bird of the Bahamas, the flamingo.

With huge thanks to the organisers for such a diverse and special occasion for world day of prayer.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of women

of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in

March. They gather to pray, reflect and share hospitality.

    able influence in the

    Feeding parrots

Often parrots are fed a diet consisting almost entirely of

mixed seeds. Unfortunately these diets do not provide

adequate nutrition, and their high fat and low vitamin and mineral contents can cause many behavioural and health

problems (liver disease, diabetes, poor feather condition).

In particular sunflower seeds are very fatty, and birds will

selectively eat these first as they are tasty.

While there are many different parrot species (e.g. galahs,

cockatoos, lorikeets, budgerigars), each with their own

nutritional requirements, a good guide to feeding parrots is outlined below.

Pellets * Good-quality brands such as Harrisons, Roudybush, Passwells. * Provide most of the daily nutrition requirements.

    * Should be 50-80% of the total daily diet.

    * May take some time & patience to transition birds over from seed-based diets.

Fresh fruit and vegetables * For example: peas, corn, broccoli, celery leaves, capsicum, carrot, spinach.

    * DONT FEED avocado, onion, rhubarb. * Wash all fruit & vegies first.

Fresh grass seed heads (NOT paspalum) * For example: milk thistle, dandelion.

    * Leave roots on provide minerals & vitamins. Branches, flowers and leaves of native plants

    * Large parrots in particular enjoy the seed heads of

Banksias, Hakeas, etc. Sprouted seed (made at home) or sprouts from the

    green-grocer

Treats can be given in small amounts and include cockatiel

seed mix, dried fruit, almond nuts, whole-meal grain crackers.

Lorikeets are nectar and pollen feeders and while their diet

is similar to above, there are a few important differences: * High-quality lorikeet formula (e.g. Passwells) - Mix into paste with fruit purees or nectars. - Once made up lasts only 6-12 hours so change

    regularly. * Fruit & vegies

    - Similar to above, but more apple, pear, nectarines,

    grapes, paw paw.

Parrots have the best chance of living a long and happy life

if they are fed a diverse but consistent range of food based

    on the above guide.

Active anti-aging ingredient Argireline , an amazing discovery!

Does this sound familiar? I have an early morning start tomorrow and I need to look 100 % The main concerns are puffy eyes, wrinkles, looking tired and

not feeling fresh The way we look sometimes can affect our confidence levels

and influence the outcome of our day. Our lives are busy with

children and careers, there never seems enough time in the day,

and we begin to compromise our own needs. Our bodies need

extra support from outside such as essential vitamins and

minerals. Healthy skin requires long term maintenance and the results

vary from product to product and skin types.

To me, a perfect day starts with vibrant and fresh looking skin.

Recently, I discovered a 2 minute solution that works on any

skin type, a micro-crme that contains Argireline widely

known to produce significant results in anti-aging. It is

basically a peptide that works like Botox in the treatment of

fine lines and wrinkles. However, not all treatments such as

botox injections may work effectively, whereas the precise

composition of Argireline will get maximum results. An

International Journal of Cosmetic Science says that a 10%

concentration of Argireline reduced wrinkles by 30% over

30 days. The powerful anti-wrinkle micro cream I am using as

an alternative to needles is called Instantly Ageless produced

in US and will be available to the Australian market very soon.

Be the first to know and get ahead of the trend!

On the side with Argireline the cream includes Sodium and

Magnesium Silicate as an exclusive blend that promotes

tightening effect of the skin. All you have to do is to place the

product for 2-3 minutes and you will see a dramatic result that

can last up to 2-3 days! Its great! Incredible technology brings

life changing results! It changed mineit can change yours..

information with the audience and answer any questions!

Vinnies Freds Van service, which offers a free, warm, nutritious meal to men, women and children who are

doing it tough in our community, will commence serving people in the Aldinga region from 20th March 2015.

Freds Van will operate one service a week from the Aldinga Community Centre, which has agreed to allow Freds Van to operate from their premises. Freds Van estimates that they will serve approximately 30-40 people

each week - half of which will be young children. This will be the first service in the southern region which provides

    meals to people experiencing disadvantage.

Aldinga was determined as the newest location for

Freds Van after aid agencies in the region highlighted the need to the St Vincent de Paul Society (SA). The

Onkaparinga Council has also been working closely with

the Society for some time to provide the Freds Van style service within its council area.

Freds Van is seeking volunteers from the local area to help with their new Aldinga service. Volunteers carry out a range of duties including food preparation and food

service. Freds Van is also keen to discuss with local businesses who are interested in donating goods or food on

a regular or ad-hoc basis. St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) State President,

Brian Spencer said, Vinnies is really concerned about the impact of current cost of living pressures. There is no question that our economic climate is undermining the

ability of many South Australians to fully look after

themselves in their local communities. This new Freds Van service will go a long way to ensuring we are able to better assist men, women and children who are doing it

tough in the Aldinga area. Freds Van supports some of the most vulnerable people in our community who experience a range of issues

such as homelessness, social isolation and unemployment.

People forced to live rough can come to Freds Van for a hot, nutritious meal, blankets, donated books, social

connection and referrals to other community service and

Government agencies. The service provides nutritious

meals and take home hampers with the support of its 520 volunteers.

Each year Freds Van helps in excess of 25,000 South Australians almost half of which are children. Brian Spencer continues whilst we have volunteers in the southern suburbs working to give a hand up to peo-

ple seeking assistance from us, this new Freds Van service is another way we are able to better support the commu-

nity. If you are able to donate a few hours of your time

once a month please consider volunteering with us today. To support Freds Van so that Vinnies can continue to as-sist men, women and children who are doing it tough,

please call Freds Van on 8112 8720.

Transforming photography inspires the local arts

community. A gathering of art lovers heard inspired speeches from the arts community at the launch of the Elements of Change photographic exhibition.

The organiser of the exhibition, Uniting Church minister Nick Randall led with crediting the many people that made the exhibition a reality. This was also his swan song, as he now moves on to another posting in Victoria. The gathering wished him well in his new life across the border.

Nick ended his bracket with his much loved guitar and song, love transforms. Don Chapman, Onkaparinga councillor was excited by the potential of the Bethany Hall facility and the arts focus. In addition to farewelling Nick (and his loud shirts), he also introduced the focus speaker, Shelley who spoke directly of her

experience with domestic violence. This relates to the central theme of the exhibition with photography from women affected by domestic violence. It was a very moving speech which got many people reflecting on all aspects of change.

The exhibition features a diverse range of photographs including some atmospheric night photography and landscape panoramas. Entry is by donation and opens throughout March and April on Saturday mornings.

Bethany Hall is located on the corner of St Jude Street and St Andrews Terrace, Willunga. Jenny Esots - Public Encounters

    Come and See!

I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave.

As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking

    about with a coffin.

3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!!
