    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONDear Reader,

Infrastructure developments. After a hiccup in which the first couple of pours were grey concrete, thishas been rectified and the shared bike/walking path is going ahead with thetan colour we expected along the foreshore. At the time of writingapproximately 1/3 of the area between Port Willunga and Snapper Point islaid.Despite many peoples best efforts, the new Telstra tower at Snapper Point

is now in place. We also have pipe work in place for our long awaited Snapper Point toilet.

Council Elections. These are being held this month and those who attended our Octobermeeting had a chance to hear from twelve of the Wine Coast Wardcandidates. Two mayoral candidates were also present, and althoughunplanned, they also took the opportunity offered to speak to us.I believe candidates also addressed the recent community forum.

Christmas Activities.- The Christmas Tree competitionis being held again this year atWillunga. (details p4)

    - Three local schools will be combining again to do a Christmaspresentation at the Aldinga Central Shopping Centre (details p9)- Another Community Christmas lunch is also planned. (detailsp9)- The Aldinga Beach Christmas pageant planning is also beingfinalized. Come together to see the pageant on the beach starting adjacentto Quondong Ave at 4 pm on 30th November and finishing with aChristmas market near the Gordon Street ramp. This promises to be funafternoon for the family culminating on seeing the sun go down over ourbeautiful Aldinga Bay.

    Traffic interruptions.

Many people have commented on how frustrating it is with the widespreadtraffic interruptions due to prolific road and infrastructure works lately. At least we know work is being done and hopefully we will reap thebenefits at its conclusion.

ANZAC Centenary.November is the month the first convoy of ships carrying AIF & NewZealand Expeditionary Forces (NZEF) left Albany 100 years ago. Theselater became the ANZACs. Merchant ships and three cruisers left andjoined two more ships at sea carrying troops from South Australia andWestern Australia along with a Japanese cruiser. They were all bound forEgypt for training before many of them took part in the landing atGallipoli the following April. This is a good opportunity to remember and be grateful to all the serviceand lay personnel who have given the ultimate sacrifice or sacrificed theirphysical and mental health to protect our freedom and way of life over theyears and their families. (My thanks to Bob Moore for lending me his copy

of Vetaffairs Spring 2014 in which this information was published.)

We officially open our newest school structurewhich the students have built by hand

On Friday 7 November at 3.30pm the first Wil-lunga Waldorf School teacher, Marita Huxholl, will visitthe school to open the brand new, hand built, mud brick, chicken house.

As part of the Steiner/Waldorf Class 3 curriculum, students study building.

The students spent 3 weeks looking at differenttypes of building techniques from Aboriginal shelters toAfrican Adobe shelters. In addition to this, the classteacher, Andrew Banks, arranged for some trades peopleto come and talk to the students including a carpenter anddesigner. The students were then asked to design and cre-ate a model of a chicken house, taking into account mate-rials, function, features and appearance. The teacher thenincorporated as many elements of the students designsinto one design.

After the school approved the proposal, the stu-dents spent three weeks building the chicken house thatincluded nearly 400 bricks they have been making byhand since the beginning of the year.

The chickens will be placed in their new home aspart of the official opening ceremony.

Janet Molloy, Principal says Were excited toopen our newest buildingwhat a triumph for the stu-dents, parents and teacher who have worked together sobeautifully to create a new home for our chickens.

Class 3 student, Katja McCumiskey, was excited totalk about the building project. Katja said We made thebricks by hand! We got wooden squares then we mixed20 clay, 10 sand and 5 straw, put this into the moulds andlet them dry. Its quite a big chicken house for 4 hens andthe run is very big. When we put the hens in, thats goingto be good and other people have said that its going to belike a hotel for them!

    THE FLYING FINN

Initially finding success in the aero-modelling field(Australian high flying champion two consecutive years)Finn decided to try his wings in the bikey scene. He waspart of the very early club life in South Australia.

He was big, strong and tough - but not indestructible. Andalong came a guard rail that got in the way of this drunk-as-a-skunk rider on his precious Kawasaki 900; not farfrom 'devil's elbow'. Finn actually died but was resusci-tated and finally restored to a useful life. Looking back onit he says, 'I realised my life had been hanging on theedge of eternity with no means of saving myself - lostwithout God!' But the accident didn't change him.

'Weazel', tough as an ox, totally undisciplined, and able tobeat up six people at one time, threw in his patch sayingto Finn, 'I can't continue because I've found Jesus Christas my Saviour'. Finn thought he'd gone around the twist;but then his own brother (not a bikey) and totally oppositeto Weazel in disposition - said, 'I'm here to tell you spe-cifically, "Jesus is real"'. Finn said whilst this rocked him,it still didn't change him.

But unable to believe in evolution, he one day got to hisknees at home and said, 'I must know the truth - if Youare real it changes everything.' He said, 'As dero as I wasI believed God probably existed, but hadn't understood.'

The events that followed convinced him, and when hepublically gave his life to Christ in a church, he says theteeth-breaking level of pain from the accident - whichwould cause him to writhe on the ground - suddenly de-creased. And his sewer-mouth instantly disappeared.

Now Finn is a gentle pioneering pastor with a fledglinghome church in Mount Compass. Phone 0468 381 884

You wouldnt even know if your cat had aids (FIV)!

What is FIV (Feline Immuno-deficiency virus)? Think HIVfor humans, but for cats! (Humans cannot contract FIV).

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a cat-only virusthat causes a suppression of their immune system. IT CANBE FATAL and once a cat has contracted the virus, it has itfor life (the virus lives in the blood of an infected cat and iscarried in its system throughout life).

The sneaky part about FIV is that cats infected with thevirus can actually remain healthy for a number of yearswithout showing any signs! Just like walking down the

streetcan you tell who has HIV and who doesnt?

Some of the symptoms that can show up include a fever, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, lethargy, and swollen lymphnodes. Cats can lose weight, have a poor coat, suffer fromdental disease or other sores in their mouth and asmentioned, can develop chronic infections or cancer.

BETWEEN 14-29% OF CATS IN AUSTRALIA TEST

    POSITIVE TO THIS VIRAL DISEASE.

How is the virus transmitted? Infected cats have highconcentrations of virus in their saliva and the most

common route of infection is via catfight wounds.

Can FIV be treated? At present there is no specifictreatment for cats infected with FIV. That is whyunderstanding the disease and preventing it withvaccinations is so important.

Which cats are at risk? Any cat that spends time outside isat risk. Most outdoor cats will at some stage be involved ina fight with other cats and therefore be at risk of beinginfected. The more they fight, the greater the chance ofcontracting FIV

How is FIV detected? A simple in-clinic blood test willdetect FIV infection in most infected cats. On occasion alaboratory test (called a PCR test) may be required toconfirm a diagnosis.

Can FIV be prevented? FIV vaccination prevents viralinfection. It is as important as the cat flu vaccinein some

areas it is THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE!

In the Aldinga area, we consider this to be a high-risk

virus and any cat that spends time outside should bevaccinated. We regularly see cats with FIV.

Welcome to our fourth in a five part series giving tips on

how we can support our community to better mentalhealth!

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (formally known as self

    harming)...

Self-injury is not a mental illness in itself, but is usually asymptom of either a mental illness or serious psychologicaldistress which needs treatment. People who harm themselvesoften have a desire to escape from unbearable anguish in theirlife, or to gain relief from tension or distress. In some cases, itmay be a cry for help.

What to look for?You may notice physical evidence of self-injury, which caninclude: cutting, scratching, tearing or pinching skin

banging or punching objects or self to the point of bruising or

bleeding interfering with the healing of wounds

burning skin with cigarettes, matches, lighters, spray cans

or hot water compulsively pulling out large amounts of hair.

Next steps...If youre deliberately injuring yourself, its vital that you speak

to a trusted adult or to your GP immediately. If you suspect someone you care about is injuring themselves, you may choose to calmly discuss it with them. Let them knowthat you have noticed their injuries and ask if they would liketo discuss it with you. You should always encourage a personwho is deliberately injuring themselves to speak to a GP ortrusted adult. If youre unsure of how to respond to your friends answers,

seek advice from a trusted adult beforehand.

If you witness someone injuring themselves, you may needto call 000 to request emergency assistance if the injuryappears to be life-threatening. Ask your friend if there isanything you can do to help reduce their distress, andencourage them to speak to a trusted adult or GP immediately. If you suspect someone has taken an overdose of

medication or consumed poison, call 000 immediately for

    an ambulance.

If you would like to use our service and talk about your

circumstances, call us on 8202 5200 to make a time tomeet with one of our team members.
