    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

Opening of Childrens Centre. As you will see in my report on p. 26 The Aldinga Beach

Childrens Centre for Early Childhood Development and Parenting was officially opened on April 8th.

This is a rather unique building and a definite asset to the

district. Its implementation has seen the schools name changed to Aldinga Beach B-7 school (birth to yr 7).

This month is History Month in SA.

Use the opportunity to catch up on some of the local history

both here and elsewhere by attending or participating at one of the many activities being offered around the state.

Locally we have the history tour from Aldinga Community

Centre as well as the Willunga National Trust display (see p 11 of this issue.)

The Discover Willunga Fair on Sunday May 3rd, with the

theme 'Transport' will include displays of early transport vehicles, railway photos and model trains. Celebrating the

centenary of the Willunga railway 1915-2015 and early

transport in Willunga, it will showcase clubs, groups and life

in Willunga. Stalls, information and food will be available.

Giselle Robin, local authoress, is also launching her new

book Shadows Over The Sun on May 23rd at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre. Main Rd, McLaren Vale.

Other events and activities can be found in the festival

programme books freely available from libraries and community centres or online at http://abouttime.sa.gov.au

I hope you enjoy the issue.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in egg-plant, nor ham in hamburger; nei-ther apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its para-doxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig..

    BEEN IN THE WARS?

    Anita

Anita's father didn't make it back from German army ser-

vice, and Anita became a 'half-orphan' with her mother and four siblings - left to survive the rigours of post war

    tyranny.

The province of Pomerania, Anita's birth place in 1941,

was the scene of large scale atrocities against the civilian population during WWII. Over 440,000 were killed (not

counting many refugees and children) from a population

of 1.9million. Gangs were free to do what they liked to refugees at railway stations.

The Nazis were replaced by the Red Army, her homeland

    ceded to Poland, their family farm commandeered and they were forced to flee. In Leipzig they found a rare flat;

every floor of the building infested with secret police.

Food was seriously scarce and Anita remembers a scram-bled egg meal for six made from a single egg. She learnt

that going to bed early reduces hunger.

Her 17 year old older sister's intellectual levels qualified her for forced service to the USSR and they decided to

escape this 'communist paradise'. In 1954 they braved a

strategic but nerve wracking journey by train and tram into West Berlin - to begin another story.

They lived on hope - their only weapon. And Anita says

without Jesus they could never have made it ("Give us this day our daily bread ..."). Faith and prayer saw provi-

sion, and the miraculous. For Anita healings: from epi-

lepsy and later, within hours of death, from a stroke.

Anita's message to day is that you don't need to be facing death or enslavement to cry out to God. Peace and pros-

perity is the best time to consider your hereafter.

Anita and her husband Walter attend a home church in

Mount Compass (Psr. Finn Siegmann 0468 381 884).

On Thursday the 18th March we took a group of enthusiastic swimmers, who

had trained hard, out to the annual SACPSSA Swimming Carnival at

Magill. It was a beautiful sunny day and the

children made the most of it! The students represented Galilee

proudly and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship throughout the day.

Their hard-work and training also paid off, as some were awarded ribbons,

as well as beat their personal best for their events.

We were very proud of all of their efforts in the pool and their support

for each other during each and every race as well.

A huge thankyou to Mandy Haw-kins-Romain, who gave up her time to run trainings, teach and support students in their swim-

ming styles, organise events and wristbands for the kids.

A big thank you also to Tessa and Lizzie who helped out on the

day. All up it was a fantastic day!

Thank you to all of the parents and families who came along and

supported their children in so many ways.

    From Eleanor, Jacob and Ben

On the 18th of March 2015 , Galilee had a swimming carni-val. It was the under 9s, 10s, 11s, 12s and seniors that com-peted in the races. There was also relays, medley and 4x freestyle.

Galilee came fourth out of all eight schools. The U12s came first in their division and won the school a blue ribbon that is up in the stage three shared space.

We also came first in the med-ley, which is a breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and free-style relay.

The sun was shining and every-one had a great day! This was only possible with the help of Mandy, Tessa, Lizzie and to all the parents that came and sup-ported us. C

Attached was received as an open letter. Due to space limitations we are unable to Include anything but the content - Ed

Dear Members of Aldinga Beach Community,

In 2014 the Aldinga Beach Brigade responded to 212

incidents. This years Fire Season has been of great concern, due to the extreme fire danger days. The Brigade had attended many fires in local and surrounding areas,

significantly a large contingent contributed to the efforts

at the Sampson Flat fires, as well as local scrub fires in the Willunga hills. We have also attended structure fires,

cliff rescues and unfortunately a large number of vehicle

accidents. The Aldinga Beach Cadet program has been a great

success this last year, we have 17 cadets attending

training. They are trained in all aspects of fire fighting

and road crash rescue. This year 2 cadets have progressed to become fire fighters.

Aldinga Beach Country Fire Service attend many

community events throughout the year, we work with schools to deliver driver education programs, and fire

safety programs to primary and kindy students. We attend

many social events within the community, and continue to pursue opportunities for recruitment. Our operational

capability relies on members of the community who are

    willing to volunteer their time.

We are very grateful indeed to all of you who have sup-ported us in previous years, this has enabled the brigade

to purchase specialist rescue equipment, which compli-

ments the standard stowage provided. We have also been able to supply additional personal protective equipment

with raincoats on our trucks, and new office equipment. It

is envisaged within the next five years we will be

replacing our heavy rescue vehicle, to enable us to keep providing the high standard of service at road accidents,

we will need to upgrade equipment at our own cost. We

also have a continued need to replace and upgrade our specialist equipment as methods for rescue and fire

    fighting change and improve.

To enable the Aldinga Beach Country Fire Service to continue its commitment to this community, we are

looking for further donations and hope that you can help

    us.

You can make a donation by sending a cheque or cash to the above address, alternatively you are able to direct

deposit to Account Name: CFS Aldinga Beach Unit Account, Account Number: 151269940, BSB: 105-033, description of transaction should make reference to

supporter. A receipt will be sent to you. Unfortunately due to changes in government policy, this year donations to the Country Fire Service are no longer tax deductible.

Be assured though that your donation will be much

    appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

    Yours Sincerely, Heather Firth, Treasurer.

In April, several events saw the winding up of the

summer season of lawn bowling at Aldinga Bay Bowling

Club. After the outstanding success of Night Owls, and the

finals of Club Championships, a very enjoyable Social

Tournament of Triples was held, where almost all Club Members rolled up to contest the Annual Digby Harris Shield, a competition which honours one of the clubs former Patrons and much loved Life Members.

The fun day was generously sponsored by member Jude

de Clerc (pictured above with overall winners- Nick, Bruce, and Dave), with a sumptuous afternoon tea being

prepared and donated by other women members.

The Annual Club Championships were concluded and all

prize winners were presented with their trophies at an

    end of season wind-up function.

Singles Champions for 2014/15, are Ric Griffin and

Sandra Rudman (pictured below) who both represented

the Club at the Champion of Champions knock-outs at Victor Harbor.

A well attended coaching clinic has also been held for

players keen to improve and practice their skills during

the coming winter months in readiness for 2015/16

season. Complimentary coaching is available for those

wishing to learn to bowl, and the Club is open Tuesday,

Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 1pm.

A tale of Alisha the hungry, hungry turtle.

At Willunga and Aldinga Vet Clinics we are happy to see

all different animals big and small. However, a case a few weeks ago was quite a novelty when Alisha a 15 year old, short-necked turtle presented to Dr Brooke Hasler at

    the Willunga Clinic.

Alisha is an indoor turtle kept in

a large tank with the same flooring she has had for her 15

years. The flooring was fine river

gravel and her tank was regularly cleaned. The night before,

Alishas owner had noticed her straining to poo a small amount.

She also recalled seeing Alisha scooping food off the floor of her

    tank and possibly eating some

gravel. When Alisha first presented she had so much gravel

build up that she was starting to

prolapse her rectum. Imagine our surprise when we took an Xray

    and discovered just how much

Alisha had ingested (eaten) of her gravel flooring!

She had a small enema to remove as much of the gravel as possible. She also had some paraffin oil to help move along

the gravel higher up in her intestines. As she was straining

so much and causing a rectal prolapse, we also placed a small stitch to make sure this didnt recur. Alisha got upgraded to the spa with minimal water and no gravel to

make sure she couldnt eat anymore. We also started her on a calcium supplement, as it was likely her abnormal eating

habits were due to low calcium and she

was trying to substitute for it.

After 2 weeks on oil we had to administer another small enema to

remove some built up gravel again and

removed the rectal stitch. After this there was a mass exit of the last bits of

    gravel from Alishas system!

Alisha has since recovered 100% and is back in her tank without river gravel

flooring. Instead we have gone with

large rocks only. Although she has an UV light she also has more time outside to enjoy natural

    sunshine and provide environmental enrichment.

Alishas case is a good reminder of the importance of diet, the environment and solar exposure in all our pets. Although Alisha was fed proper turtle food she was

indicating that she needed an extra boost of calcium in her

    Compliments of Willunga Veterinary Services

diet. Turtles also need a good UVA and UVB light source to utilise calcium and if theyre kept in tanks, turtles need to have finely controlled pH and nitrate levels

in their water. If you have a pet turtle yourself and have any questions feel free to contact us for advice or arrange

    a vet health check.

    Trees for Life

at Willunga Fair! Native plants will be available for sale at the Willunga Trees for Life stall at the Discover

Willunga Fair on Sunday 3rd May from 11am to 4pm. All plants are local species,

May and June are the ideal months to plant natives, as it allows the plants to take full ad-vantage of winter rains to establish themselves and develop their roots prior to summer. Be-cause of this, Willunga Trees for Life is en-

couraging everyone to buy our plants at the Fair rather than wait until later in the year. It is possible that the traditional July sale will be discontinued, so dont miss out!
