PERFORMATIVE ARCHITECTURE

As a paradigm for architecture, performance describes the processes through which culture, technology and

architecture become interrelated to form a complex field of relations to produce new and powerful effects.

Performative architecture defines the architectural object - be it a building, urban plan, or organizational matrix - not

exclusively by how it appears, but also through its capacities of affecting, transforming and doing; in other words

by how it performs.

The building is understood as the sum of effects it has upon people, including:

The building as a shell for activities and experiences

The building is shaped by its use (borrowed existence)

The reality of the building itself, as meant by the design and realized by the construction

While performance serves as a useful lens through which to analyze existing architecture, optimistic performative

architectural design processes can generate evocative architecture, improving the quality of life of those that

interact with it.
