FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —MAY 10, 2020 PG. 1
OUR GRAND REOPENING
This is the first weekend in 2 months that we are
allowed to resume our usual weekend Mass schedule.
Although I am wring this on May 3, I don’t foresee any
reason to limit the number of people in church at any
given Mass as long as we maintain the “social
distancing.” The total number of people who a%end on
any given weekend would barely fill either church one
me. I think that if we leave every other pew empty we
should be fine. We cannot have too many people cluster
in the back. If we don’t follow these pracces we might
be told to shut down for the me being.

Mother’s Day
Today, the second Sunday in May, we
honor our mothers, living and deceased.
The modern holiday of Mother's Day was
first celebrated in 1908, when Anna
Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at
St Andrew's Methodist Church in
Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to
make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United
States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves
Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who
cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American
Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to
address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor
her mother by continuing the work she started and to set
aside a day to honor all mothers, because she believed
that they were "the person who has done more for you
than anyone in the world".
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation
designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in
May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. By 1922,
owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, all US states
observed the holiday, with some of them officially
recognizing Mother's Day as a local holiday.
It is fitting that this civic observance falls during the
month of May which the Church sets aside to honor the
Mother of all mothers … the Blessed Virgin Mary, the
Mother of God (Jesus) and the Mother of the Church. On
the Cross, before He died, Jesus entrusted His Holy
Mother, Mary to His beloved Apostle, St. John and St.
John to His Mother when He said to her, “Behold, your
son. And to him, “Behold, your mother.” St. John
represents the Church and all her members. Jesus invites
us to welcome His Mother into our homes, our hearts and
our lives.
On this special day I encourage you to pray for your
mother and all mothers, living and deceased; that God
may reward their sacrifices and the hardships suffered for
the good of their husbands and families. Pray that all
mothers welcome the gift of life in the womb.

We believe in science! Or so members of a
certain political party boldly declare. If they
really do, then why do they deny the reality that
science teaches us that human life begins at the
moment of conception? Why do they deny the
humanity of the child in the womb and vote
consistently to push against all prolife efforts to
protect life in the womb? Why do they vote
against any legislation to protect a child that has
survived an attempted abortion? I guess I would
call it blatant hypocrisy. I would not vote for any
patently proabortion candidate unless all the
candidates for a particular office were pro
abortion. Then I would try to choose the one
who would cause the least amount of damage.

Mother’s Day Humor
PAUL REVERE’S MOTHER: “I don’t care where you
think you have to go, young man, midnight is past your
curfew.”
MONA LISA’S MOTHER: “A(er all that money your
father and I spent on braces, that’s the biggest smile
you can give us?”
COLUMBUS’ MOTHER: “I don’t care what you’ve
discovered, you sll could have wri%en.”
MICHELANGELO’S MOTHER: Can’t you paint on walls
like other children? Do you have any idea how hard it
is to get that stuff off the ceiling?”
NAPOLEON’S MOTHER: “All right, if you aren’t hiding
your report card inside our jacket, take your hand out
of there and show me!”
ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S MOTHER: “What’s with the
stovepipe hat? Can’t you just wear a baseball cap like
the other kids?”
ALBERT EINSTEIN’S MOTHER: “But it’s your senior
picture. Can’t you do something about your hair?”
GEORGE WASHINGTON’S MOTHER: “The next me I
catch you throwing money across the Potomac, you
can kiss your allowance goodbye.”
JONAH’S MOTHER: “That’s an interesng story. Now
tell me where you’ve really been for the last three
days.”
THOMAS EDISON’S MOTHER: “Of course I’m proud
that you invented the electric light bulb. Now turn it
off and get to bed.”

ST. STANISLAUS NEWS
Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty (18921975) penned these beautiful thoughts about motherhood:
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —MAY 10, 2020 PG. 2
Fr. Sanderson
“The Most Important Person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the
honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built
something more magnificent than any cathedrala dwelling for an
immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body...The angels have not
been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative
miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can.
Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins
forces with mothers in performing this act of creation... What on God's
good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?”
PRACTICAL ADVICE FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
“If you put up with suffering for doing what is right, this is acceptable in God’s eyes. It was for this you were
called, since Christ suffered for you in just this way and left you an example, to have you follow in his
footsteps” (I Peter 2:20b21).
